Iris Silver Mist by Serge Lutens Les Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido

Made from the root of the iris. Smells green and root-like. I did not find it interesting or appealing.

Ambre Canelle by Creed

Most Creed fragrances have a strong bergamot and/or lavender overlay. This intense fougere overlay has been long used by many houses and is no longer welcome in my world.

I thought it would be interesting to see what I would think of a Creed that had no bergamot and lavender – if such a fragrance existed.

Fortunately I had access to Michael Edwards’ [paid] online Fragrances of the World database. I was able to look at Edward’s fragrance pyramids, which provide detailed descriptions of all of the notes in the Creed fragrances. I found Ambre Canelle which has none of the dreaded bergamot and lavender. I ordered it and it arrived today.

I like it a lot. Because it is free of fougere notes, it is more unique and has a stronger personality than other scents in the Creed family. It is light, gentle and delightful to smell. A man or a woman could wear this. It is not sweet, but has a nice, gender neutral rose note. It is pleasant, refreshing and makes me feel like getting down to business. Would be nice in a workplace. For people who wear scent seasonally, this would be a nice spring scent.

Virgilio by Diptyque

Michael Edwards says the heart note is mint.

Angeliques Sous La Pluie by Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle

Amazing fragrance; another Malle stunner.

Has a delightful basso profundo top note. For me the cedar "basenote" comes into play almost immediately. A bit of smoke at the top.

After the top,the fragrance quiets as it enters the heart.

Would be a great men's fragrance. (A great relief from the tediously overused men's bergamot & lavendar combo, although, this does have a bit of bergamot at the top.)

Well constructed and handsome (the fragrance, that is). "Tasteful" without being conservative. Smells "confident." For a man who has the opportunity to wear fragrance to work, a touch of this would be wonderful.

Opus 1870 by Penhaligon's

To my nose the top notes are problematic. I experience them as bergamot & lavendar; sour, bitter, turpentine, with a little sweetening. The combination always puts me off. I wonder if anyone else experiences top notes like that in this fragrance. I find that many men's fragrances have this citrus & lavender character. After the top notes dissappear, there is an oriental wood fragrance "tainted" with residual top notes.
