Eau Sauvage by Christian Dior

Upon testing this, I thought it had a great lemony fresh ZZZZING! opening. Almost eye-watering on the card. I thought it would be quite zippy on my skin. So I tried it, then brought some. I doused myself twice in one day (once after morning shower, once at lunchtime), expecting to be teary-eyed from all the zest, and lo and behold - it faded very quickly away to almost nothing. Within an hour or so, all I had was a VERY feint sense of freshness, or at least, not a sweaty unpleasant man smell. Verdict: great smell! But unfortunately, my skin soaks it up to nothing! A crying shame, given all the rave reviews here! I'm still keeping it - It's winter at the moment and I'm hoping perhaps it will do something different in summer...

Tuscany / Etruscan by Aramis

It's simple and stylish but with presence and panache. While some scents may be extremely complex and have plenty of depth, this one works well without too much fuss. It's a little bit more sophisticated than the "Classic" Aramis - "Tuscany" is dressed a little more stylishly for the office. In the first hour or so, my eyes almost began watering it came on so strong. It reminded me of a sun-drenched mediterranean seaside village in bright, bright sunlight. But eventually it settled down a little to a still quite strong and remarkably potent scent. Certainly has a very masculine presence, with more than a touch of spice and it seems somehow familiar, as if I've smelt this somewhere before, way back in the mists of time. Seems to have great sillage and staying power, so one should be careful not to over-apply. Best of all it does not end in a puffy, flowery cloud! Good signs! Definately worth considering as an office/work scent.

Polo Sport by Ralph Lauren

It just occurred to me that if this were a movie, it would be a light, fluffy, pointless Hollywood Romantic Comedy with Julia Roberts and/or Matthew McConnachy. It's a perfectly nice smell, but there's no depth to it, no complexity. It's oh-so-slightly tangier or sharper than Polo Blue but still, after the initial "hmm that's interesting", there's no more interest. Don't get me wrong - it's better than Eau de cigarette, but it never really gets past the peachy-keen, All-American, Star & Stripes, apple-pie cotton-candy veneer that is on the surface. Which is a shame. I expected more from Ralph Lauren. Oh, and it really doesn't last all that long, and it's hard pressed to make it's present felt after about an hour or so. Again, I own this particular "Polo" but come on, Ralph, you're letting me down! I'm expecting something better from that name!

Polo Blue by Ralph Lauren

Nice smell, woodsy and dry, but doesn't last all that long. Not quite as "cotton-candy fluff" as Polo Sport. Slightly more refined and - dare I say it - complex! Is that the right word? Perhaps it's just not overtly waving around such a big, coloured flag as "Sport". It's sitting further back from the front row, in a nice tweed jacket, holding one of those little plastic flags you get in exotic cocktails. But you could very easily not even notice it. Again, like "Sport" it lacks a little definition, some potency and sillage, but in its favour, it is slightly more refined. I would consider wearing this one out to a party or social occasion. But only if I wasn't required to stay more than five minutes. I own it, but I think you could do better.

Antaeus by Chanel

Uh - aren't men's fragrances supposed to smell masculine? This has to be one of the softest, gentlest, most feminine smelling "male" scents I've ever tried. Noooooooo thanks.

Joop! Jump by Joop!

I brought this blind, but was nonetheless somewhat impressed by the smell initially. In the end though, I have decided that JOOP! Jump is not for me. Sure, it's different, but I end up with an annoying tickle at the back of my throat and a coughing fit from the very flowery finish. Don't waste your money. A dry, cough-inducing flowery cloud hanging around me is not what I look for in a masculine fragrance.

Aramis by Aramis

An oldie but a goodie! I may not know much about scents, or "dry-down", or "sillage" (whatever the heck they are!) but I know what I like. It comes on quite strong - but smooth - at first, so you have to be careful to avoid overuse. It smells very strong and sunny, like a favourite, well-remembered day from your distant past. It brings to mind images of golden fields of grain. There is nothing that will go wrong with this picture. It is also quite sweet, but in a strong masculine way, and not at all overdone.
I applied it just before 6 am this morning, and I can still get a waft of it now at almost 5.30 this afternoon! (Even after having tested something completely different at lunchtime today!) Now that's staying power!
Not the most sophisticated scent by a long shot, but well worth it overall.

Silver Shadow by Davidoff

Nice enough and initially smells complex, mysterious and expensive but
after a while the dry down ends with a powdery, cough-inducing cloud,
even with just two small sprays over four hours ago. Don't like the floral ending - too
feminine.

Givenchy pour Homme by Givenchy

I wasn't impressed at first. But slowly, over time, I have almost come to grips with this. Although I prefer slightly heavier colognes, this one does seem to come across as fairly classy at first, but with a fair amount of fruit hitting my nostrils, which I am not overly fond of. However, I do like the fact that it kind of sneaks up on me under the radar. Not too heavy (as long as you don't splash it all over yourself) and it doesn't last as long as I would like. Not bad, but not my favourite.
