Claiborne Sport by Liz Claiborne

This is one of my favorites. I couldn't begin to dissect the note pyramid given above (what do rainforest tree bark and forest lichen smell like anyway?), but I can say that it smells bright, clean, and pleasant, and it lasts very well on me. This is a great everyday scent for a man who just wants to smell nice and clean all day long without being overly drenched in fragrance.

Azzaro pour Homme by Azzaro

When I smell this, I am immediately reminded of . . . Charlie’s Angels! Not that I didn't like the show (I did), but this is definitely of that era, and I can just imagine some of the macho villain "guest stars," chest hair and all, smelling exactly like this. Ugh!

Versace l'Homme by Versace

This smells similar to Escada to me. Both are nice sweet, soft fragrances, but to me they smell like an old lady's perfume. Just not my thing, I guess.

Greenergy by Givenchy

I like it. I guess it's supposed to smell like cut grass, and I can get that, but I think it's more flowery than grassy. Nonetheless, it's pleasant but somewhat sweet. I swear, though, that I smell musk somewhere in the background, which makes it warm and kind of sexy as it wears on. Very nice.

New West for Him by Aramis

I don't know what they were going for with this one. To me, it smells like a Halls Mentho-Luptus cough drop combined with Vicks VapoRub.

The bottle is shaped like a huge popper bottle. Perhaps they should have called it New West Hollywood?

Eau de Rochas Homme by Rochas

Eau, de roaches are out tonight! (sorry, couldn't resist)

Smells like Orangina soft drink when I first put it on, and then it morphs into a coniferous forest kind of scent that lasts and lasts.

This is addictive. I love it!

Unbound for Men by Halston

To me, this smells like cucumbers when I first put it on. Not that this is a bad thing; I really like it. It eventually develops into a light herby scent that lasts quite a long time on me, but that cucumber aura never seems to leave, always enlivening the proceedings. How nice—very fresh, lively, and clean. I love this!

Iceberg Twice Homme by Iceberg

I haven't been able to like this one much. I find it very sweet and HEAVY! Smells like commode spray to me. No thanks.

Bowling Green by Geoffrey Beene

This has become one of my favorites. I had never even heard of it until I read about it here (I am a bit of a latecomer to all this), but I bought it on the basis of the reviews, and I am glad I did. I have learned that I seem to like fragrances with a lemony element, and this one definitely has that. Plus, I love the way it evolves into a gentle spicy/woodsy aroma that manages to be both refreshing and long lasting. There is nothing outlandish or overbearing about it, either; I find it a tasteful, appealing, anytime kind of scent. In fact, this is the one I usually go for in situations where I might encounter “fragrance-sensitive” people—I can’t imagine anyone being disturbed by this. For that and for all its other qualities, I think it is superb. Of course, now that I found it, I learn that it is discontinued! I will definitely stock up on this one while I can.

Swiss Army by Swiss Army

This is not bad at all but not a favorite, either. To me, it starts off with a melon-like scent, which is kind of bright and somewhat fresh. After that, it seems to take on an attractive floral character that never leaves. On the basis of the notes listed, though, I was hoping for a seductive woodsy drydown (I thought it might even end up smelling somewhat like Christmas trees), but it doesn’t have that—not even close. It does have somewhat of a woodsy element, but it is very soft and is overtaken by the floral notes, which persist to the very end. If the wood notes were amplified a bit more, this would be great for me. Still, I’ll give it a thumbs up rating because it really is a nice fragrance. I just find it a bit too flowery for my taste.

Lacoste pour Homme by Lacoste

It's OK, kind of spicy. It's a pleasant scent but smells like any other spicy men's cologne.

Égoïste / L'Égoïste by Chanel

This would be a nice fragrance if you could actually smell it. I put it on at 3 PM, and I’m liking it. I smell a bit of rose, then some honey, and then some nice vanilla. Very pleasant. The only problem is that the scent progression happens in about 20 minutes, and after that, it’s gone. By 5:20 PM, I can hardly even detect it anymore. I thrust my head back, trying to generate some kind—any kind—of fragrance waft from my neck. I get nothing. I run my finger down my neck and smell it. Nothing. What a ripoff. No more Chanel for me.

Blu pour Homme by Bulgari

I like this. It’s a fascinating fragrance with multiple personalities, and I can see why it has such mixed reviews. It does smell like baby powder at first, as others have mentioned. In fact, when you first put it on, you might think you are wearing Love’s Baby Soft. The baby powder scent lasts a long time, too, about two hours on me, but it’s not unpleasant. After that, the fragrance seems to disappear entirely, as if it’s gone. But don’t be fooled; it’s not—and this is where the fun begins. Just when you think it’s over, it comes back with a subtle, sweet, woodsy, incense-like scent enlivened with maybe a hint of bubblegum (or even PEZ candy?). It’s a delicious drydown—and very clever. Lasts a long time, too. I like this because it seems different from anything else I’ve tried. It’s not my all-time favorite, but I admire it for its originality, and I love it when I’m in the mood for it.

Gravity by Coty

Yes, it's cheap. Yes, you can buy it at any drug store or discount store. Nevertheless, I happen to love the way it smells. In some ways, it reminds me of the original Pierre Cardin, but I think it's better. The clove gives it a little bite, but overall, I think it's a somewhat sweet, somewhat spicy, but very soft and comforting fragrance. It doesn't change much, except at the very end, where the last wisps give off a mildly sweet and pungent aroma that one might characterize as a "dirty butt" type of scent. Still, I like it and find it inexplicably calming. In fact, it's one of my favorites just to wear around the house. Thumbs up for me.

Dunhill Fresh by Alfred Dunhill

Sampled this at the department store. Sorry, but this smells like Ben Gay liniment to me. If I wanted to smell like an arthritic grandmother, I guess I'd just go for the real thing.

Sung Homme by Alfred Sung

I have mixed feelings about this one. I do like some parts of it. At first, it has a crisp, clean Irish Spring sort of scent that I find appealing. But after it lingers for awhile, I think that it smells like the stuff the barber wipes on you after shaving your neck!

Adidas Moves by Adidas

Even though I am new to this, I had to add my comments about this fragrance because I find it so fascinating. It starts off very strong and strange; at first, it almost smells like pizza to me! Odd. Then, about 15 minutes into it, it takes on a stinging, medicinal aroma that I swear smells exactly like RID louse treatment shampoo. So far, you might think that this will be a negative review, but in fact it is not. Get past the initial impressions, and this settles into a pleasant, somewhat musty scent that I find very appealing—something like wildflowers in a dark, damp bog. I can’t really explain it any better. That last scent is the one that lasts the longest, though, and I find it worth going through the openings to get there. This also stays pretty long on me; I can put it on at 5 AM and still smell it when I get home at 4 PM, and even hours later, if I run my finger across my neck, I still get traces of it. One thing I did find was that the initial scent was too aggressive for me when applied directly, so I found that spraying it on a tissue and then dabbing it on worked best for me. I’m sure there must be other crazy mixed-up fragrances of this style out there that I don’t know about, but for now, I’m liking this one. It’s a great bargain, too.

Tuscany / Etruscan by Aramis

This is very nice, very smooth and comfortable. It comes on initially with what I would characterize as a lemony scent, but that doesn’t last long. It eventually settles into what I would call a classic Aramis scent. In all Aramis scents I've tried, the lasting impression is sandalwood, and this one is no different. It's not shown in the pyramid, but I smell sandalwood in the base of this one. I happen to like that smell, and Tuscany does it very nicely indeed—very soothing and sexy. An excellent fragrance.
