Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene
Love it!! My wife told me this was one of her favourite scents. At first, I thought it reeked of ultra- strong lawn clippings...but, I left it on for a whole day. Phew, what a difference!! It left a musky, almost laundry -hung- out- for- a -day scent. I got LOTS of compliments at the office. I once bought one of those male attraction scents; you know, the kind that are supposed to attract the opposite sex? Well, looking back on my naivete, all I had to do was buy Grey Flannel because that 's what it smelled like...exactly. I highly recommend this scent especially to men that have lots of contact with the public.

No. 89 by Floris
Hmmm! I tend to agree with some reviewers that this stuff reeks of funeral parlour. The opening is nice and flowery, but then it takes on a musty, powdery "death" scent, almost like crusty gym socks or week-old underwear. Maybe that's why James Bond wears it: he's constantly involved with death and deception. So why not name it Floris No. 007?? Certainly this was Floris's biggest lapse in judgement.

JF by Floris
Beautiful scent! Agree with all the others that it has a GIT/Cool Water opening. But after an hour or so it becomes pure Floris, unique and not chemically offensive. The drydown definitely has a positive sour note reminiscent of fresh laundry. To get the best possible advance-reaction from people, try spritzing some on a light bulb and waiting a few seconds. That's probably what others will experience when you heat up around mid-day.

Hugo by Hugo Boss
Peeeeeeeeew!!! I had to endure this abomination when I worked in a major men's department store. I swallowed aspirins like candy in order to combat all the headaches throughout my workday. There aren't enough expletives in the English language to describe this one. I had a better time tolerating halitosis and farts than this. And the nausea?? Boy, I tell you long stories about that. Women like it??I don't think so. My ex roommate had a bottle and and the only comments I'd get from my female visitors is "bleaaahhh" along with covered noses and looking for the nearest open window. It also left an almost unwashable residue on our towels and furniture.
To this day whenever I smell this barbaric concoction on men in the street I get nauseous and cross the street. Just plain nasty!!! Three thumbs way down.

English Fern by Penhaligon's
I agree with most of the reviewers. I first tried this scent in a Penhaligon's scent library. English Fern was perhaps the only scent vial that hooked me. It is soapy, clean, non-offensive and smells like a fresh morning in an aromatic forest. One of the first memories it brought to mind (they say the nose brings back the most memories) was that of my female elementary school teachers. That "just out of the shower" smell which I find so sexy. Lots of pine needles, lavender, soap, and loads of kid memories in this one. I love it!! Will get the largest bottle they sell very soon.

Eton College Collection by Taylor of Old Bond Street
YUK!!! I almost puked when I opened up this bottle today after it arrived in the mail. I seriously got nausea and tried desperately to wash it off my hand. It smells like CK Obsession(which I loathe) on steroids!!! It has "pimp" written all over it. My only question is: Do scholarly, conservative Eton boys really wear this awful junk??Don't get suckered in by the name. You'll probably smell better slapping on some Mr. Clean or Pine Sol. I'm getting my $$$ back!!!

Marlborough by Geo F Trumper
It's very hard to go wrong with Trumper. I received Marlborough today and my senses were dancing all over the place. My wife loves it! It reminds me of a lighter version of Aramis with a lingering citrus note. It is very clean and crisp. I could not detect soap, though, as some of the other reviewers did. It certainly has a barbershoppy edge to it with a touch of sweetness. Along with Spanish Leather, Marlborough has become my cologne of choice. Both convey a clean, conservative British air that, at the same time, are sexy and not at all boring.

Aramis by Aramis
If the USA were required to sign a Fragrance Protocol and boil it down to two scents that represent us it would be---Polo and ....Aramis. Aramis just smells awesome!!!
As an aside, every scent that is suppied aboard a transcontinental flight or at a five-star hotel seems to smell like Aramis??Mere coincidence? I guess it could be called a "clean, business-like scent" for people that are constantly on the road or in the sky. It has just a touch of sweetness, but the rest is masculine through and througn. Some reviewers call it "old and grandpa-ish" but I disagree.
Here's a tip for the guys:
1) Shower with Dial Gold soap
2)Use any unscented hair gel and deodorant
3) Spay lightly some Aramis on the pulse points
....and wait for the compliments!!!

Aqua Velva Ice Blue by Williams
One of those scents you never forget and always remember fondly. Right next to Old Spice as classic American scents! People who call it "cheap" miss the point. It's not about dollars and cents, it's about memories. My dad wore it and rotated it with Old Spice. Those are the two scents that still linger from my childhood...right up there with Camels, cigars, Coors beer and Mom's beans and tortillas. I've squandered vast amounts of cash trying to buy an "elite" version of Aqua Velva but have failed miserably. Nothing like the original. And as close as your nearest supermarket.

Old Spice by Procter & Gamble
A CLASSIC!!! I think it's the only scent mentioned in a rock song---"Keeping the Faith" by Billy Joel. I saw a photo of Paul McCartney splashing it on in his hotel room in the early 60s while the Fab Four were invading the U.S. My dad wore it and so did his entire circle of friends. My uncle(who is a Catholic priest , by the way) wore it when I was growing up and, at the time, I could never understand why the ladies would bring him food to the parish and literally and spiritually want to jump his bones. Now it ALL makes sense.

Knize Ten by Knize
Tried this one after it being recommended to me by a European friend. I LOVED it!!! I think the other reviewers' noses, the ones who bashed it, are so brainwashed with department store scents as being the norm(I mean those hideous ones that make you choke as you walk into the fragrance department) that they've forgotten the timeless boutique scents that aren't mass marketed. Everywhere I looked for Knize Ten, either they didn't carry it or it was sold out. That shoud tell you something. It starts out with a Roman Catholic church incense note then progesses to a new-car leather smell. The drydown is stupendous! I've had several compliments on it at work. People tend to get close and crane their heads over my shoulders. I also know that it was James Dean's favorite scent. Was his sex appeal "just" a coincidence??

Polo by Ralph Lauren
Timeless!!! This is perhaps the "only" American fragrance, along with Aramis, that I own or repurchase. The scent is forthright and says to me MASCULINITY. Pine, leather, tobacco, cedar, musk, etc...smells just as great today as it did the first time I wore it. It's no surprise that among Polo scents this is the reigning champion. The box and bottle are understated but the scent speaks volumes. It's the only scent that smells great even when men tend to bathe themselves in it. It's that awesome! I've heard other reviews say that Polo and Old Spice are the "only" scents that bring women to their knees. I tend to agree. One has the scent of Dad when they were growing up(Polo) and the other of babies talcum powder(Old Spice).Lots of psychological underpinnings there. To all beginners looking for the 'perfect" first scent, I highly recommend that first bottle be Polo.

Spanish Leather by Geo F Trumper
Like a barbershop in church. I LOVE this scent!! It's all there: leather, soap, some cigar undertones, hickory wood, a dash of musk, hence all the ingredients that make men MEN. Nothing at all like those ghastly, make-a-run-for-the-nearest-window colognes you find at Macy's or Nordstrom. Trumper's is a very welcoming, quaint shop in London(I was there in late 2005) that sells "tests of time", not the latest, flash in the pan designer fragrance that'll be in the bargain bins two years from now. I just ordered GFT's Marlborough and I expect it to give me the same satisfaction, if not more. Kudos to the House of Trumper. They don't hand out those royal appointments for nothing, I see.
