    Vanille Marine by Martine Micallef

Vanille Marine opens with a relatively sweet vanilla that immediately moves up from the scent's heart to mingle with a subtle candied lemon top note. The candied lemon hangs around into to the early heart notes in a diminished role, giving way to the vanilla that now takes the fore, joined by a supporting marine accord that does not call tremendous attention to itself, instead acting in support of the starring sweet non-bean-like vanilla. Base notes of clean musk and what most likely is guaiac wood act as further subtle support for the star, but stay well in the background. Projection is average and longevity is good to excellent.

Vanille Marine is another very nice composition by Micallef. Martine Micallef has proven masterful vision and execution in conveying aquatic themes without the use of calone and other harsh ingredients in many of her prior compositions, and Vanille Marine is no exception. You get the sea breeze mingling with the sweetness of the vanilla, with just the faintest whiff of the candied lemon accenting the tandem to give you a nice mix of the two polar extremes that many crave. Definitely sweetness is the more powerful of the two battling accords, straying just a bit too much in its direction for my personal taste. That said, if you are a sweet scent lover that tends to eschew aquatics in fear of them coming off as artificial and harsh, then Vanille Marine gives you the best of both worlds. While a bit too sweet and pricey for an unequivocal purchase recommendation, Vanille Marine earns a "very good" 3.5 stars out of 5 and is definitely worth seeking out for a sniff.
