Which musk?

Hi everyone. I've only recently started taking a real interest in the world of fragrances and I'm looking for some good places to start. I've always had a soft spot for 'budget' fragrances and currently wear Old Spice, Canoe and Brut Original. I've never tried a musk and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a good drug store musk. I've looked at Brut, Jovan and Aqua Velva musks but am not really sure where to start.

I'd start with the Aqua Velva musk because it's so inexpensive, you can find it in supermarkets, and it smells good. I think it's a pretty good representation of what musk smells like, though musks come in all shapes and sizes. It's a very smooth, mellow scent that won't offend anyone, and you might even get some compliments from wearing it.

I like Jovan's musk too, but it has a very harsh floral opening that might be a turn-off; it's a pretty nasty, synthetic smelling cologne for about a half hour, but it mellows out after that and the musk really comes through. It's a pretty good scent.

I didn't know Brut had a musk cologne. I love regular Brut, though.

Jovan musk and Alyssa Ashley musk are two of my favorites.

Thanks very much for the advice guys. Much appreciated.

Take note: Jovan's and Kiehls smell almost the same. I am using the word "almost" for Kiehl's feels of better quality than Jovan's. It does last longer...

I've sampled Aqua Velva musk and found it to be superior to Jovan's, which I own. Jovan can be a bit too sweet/powdery for me at times. I'd go with the Aqua Velva for an inexpensive musk starter. Rossi46; Can you find either of these two in the UK?

I agree that Aqua Velva's is better than Jovan's. It's a lot smoother. Sometimes Jovan's is a bit too astringent and floral for me. Kieh's, however, is the best pure musk scent I've ever smelled. It's sweaty and animalic smelling, like a musk should be.

Thanks everyone. Think I'll pick myself up the Aqua Velva sometime soon. I currently have the Jovan and Avon musks, of which I actually prefer the Avon. I find it a little less synthetic than the Jovan product.

I've always enjoyed Monsieur Musk, but this is from using the aftershave, not the cologne...it's lighter and soapier smelling and less sweet.

I have just ordered Brut Musk of an Ebay site out of England - I will post about it when it arrives.
