Ever since I was a child I've been delighted by the Clubman line of fragrances by Pinaud. All of them can be had for under $10.00 US, and the namesake fragrance - Clubman - is readily available at grocery stores and Drug Stores in the United States. I don't know if they're available outside of the US, but I'd have to think so. Numerous others can be ordered through the following website: http://www.clubmanonline.com/afshloco.html . These are really old school, barbershop fragrances, and I have yet to smell one which I don't like. One of my favorite fragrances of all time is Naturelle Sec by Pinaud, which I still own (bought in 1969) but is very unfortunately discontinued. Upon Shamu's recommendation, I recently purchased Clubman Special Reserve, which is a wonderful powerhouse, spicy leather concoction. I'm really loving it. I am also a big fan of Lilac Vegetal (1880!), and I own and use Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum on a regular basis (and have done so for the past 30 years). I plan to buy them all at some point. Pinaud frags are fantastic, and I, for one, highly recommend them!

I own Clubman, Special Reserve, Citrus Musk and Bay Rum and enjoy them all. I want to try Lilac Vegetal, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Dennard.......I was expecting something rather nasty when my bottle of Lilac Vegetal arrived a few months back - based on many of the descriptions I had read in the reviews - but I am very pleased with it. Longevity is on the short side, but the fragrance itself is quite lovely, in my opinion. My wife likes it as well. What I get from it is crushed green lilac stems along with a soft lilac floral note, similar to what you might smell while spending a little time in a florist's shop while they are cutting stems and preparing an arrangement. There is a slight touch of powder as well. It works quite well as an after shave for me. I tend to shave before I go to bed (between 0430 to 0630 in the morning) and I catch soft wisps of Lilac Vegetal when I awaken 6 or so hours later. It also does a nice job of sealing up the pores. I think you'll find it to be a winner! Please let me know.

Thanks for your thoughts, SillageMonger. I will definitely approach it with an open mind and hope it works for me.

I was the guy who initially described Lilac Vegetal as smelling like corned beef and cabbage boiled in urine. I've since revised my review and have come to really like this frag. SM's description is good. I get good longevity for an aftershave/EDC - about 4 or 5 hours. The stuff is so damn cheap, you can keep reapplying it during the day without worries.

Another good Pinaud that's overlooked is Classic Vanilla. It's neither gourmand nor super sweet. It's a fougere with vanilla in the base. Imagine what Clubman would smell like if you added more coumarin in the base and made it sweeter, and you've got Classic Vanilla.

I'm a big Clubman fan, too. The Classic Vanilla one is my favorite, but the name is not reflective of the smell. It's not sweet at all and the vanilla doesn't dominate. It's an overlooked gem. I also like the regular one, Special Reserve, and I just got a bottle of Lilac Vegetal. OMG! It's really piss-filled men's room for awhile before the powdery lilac takes over. It's almost fetishy to me; even more so than Kouros.

Good point. Yes, Kouros smells like cotton candy compared to the initial skankiness of Lilac Vegetal.

Lilac Vegetal scares me (perhaps the only bottle of anything I have actually thrown away), but I worship at the shrine of regular Clubman. I also like the Bay Rum, although I have some trouble with it as an aftershave--it feels lively on my skin, but something (clove oil?) gives a hot and prickly sensation rather than the cool and refreshing lift of Clubman or a more mentholated AS like Aqua Velva or Skin Bracer. I do like the scent of the Bay Rum though.

Has anybody tried Clubman Musk. That's the next one on my list to try.

Clubman Musk is solid and worth having, but is not a superstar of the line.
