Cornell Lab of Ornithology's website allaboutbirds.org site has a beta program called Merlin. It's purpose is to identify the species of a bird from your own photo. At this time, it works best on a computer with a recent version of Chrome or Safari - not on tablets or phones yet - and it hopes to be able to identify the 400 most common bird species in North America.
