Future's Past by House of Matriarch (2017)

Future's past is the interior of a massive fir tree, needles glistening with the last night's rain, and the trunk encrusted with resin.*Damp soil underneath the tree dominates this scent as well, littered fallen needles amidst tender green sprouts. The listed notes are simply wood resin, larch and balsam fir.

Fir and soil make up the most prominent characteristics for the first hour, but give way to earthy greenery/what I assume is the larch(though I'm not familiar with larch in isolation).

It is easily the most natural-smelling and realistic fir I have ever tried, more so than the likes of Norne, Arso, Fume, Wald, Fille en Aiguilles and many others. It's natural to the point that it almost ventures out of the realm of fragrance and into the realm of a fragrant snapshot. I'm not always looking for stark photorealism in my conifers, but Future's Past is a literal interpretation of what you might smell in the mountains in the early morning. If I want realism, this is my go-to choice.

Longevity is the bane of this otherwise perfect fragrance, despite my sheer desperation to smell it all day it is barely detectable after 2-3 hours.

Sacre Noir from the same house is a cousin to Future's past that uses a very similar fir accord but in the context of sugarplums and Christmas celebration. I'd recommend both of these, though Sacre Noir is more easily available.

I thought it had been discontinued but you can actually still grab it on the website here. Might pick up another one myself while I'm at it.

Yeap...I ordered some last Saturday and it should be here in a couple of days. Looks like the Sacre Noir isn't available anymore though. Any ideas on where to pick some of that one up? Thanks for reminding me of this one. I remember reading about it a few years ago when it came out because of the Twin Peaks theme. I was going to pick some up at that time but got side tracked and forgot all about it. I'm looking forward to trying this out! Thanks again.

For the last few years Sacre Noir has been restocked sometime in November, I'd guess that it will return again this year. I have an extra official sample that I'd be happy to send your way though. You might also try sending an email to House of Matriarch, Danick (the woman I've exchanged messages with in the past) has been very accommodating with previous orders.

Future's Past is a must have for any Conehead who loves the conifers! I won't try to describe it as JS has done a great job of that already. The only sadness about this one is as he already mentioned, it has pretty poor longevity. As I've mentioned before, I'm okay with weak sauce sillage, but I need longevity when buying pricey fragrances. This one smells so good while it lasts though that I'm not sad I purchased it.
