Site is currently unfriendly towards reviews and reviewers

The redesign is really unfriendly towards reviews and reviewers. I don’t know if the intention is to turn Basenotes into just another place to chat, but for me reading the reviews and being able to place reviews are the most important parts.

Here are some of the things that could be fixed:

    1) Nowhere at the top of the homepage is there any indication that the site contains reviews – a new visitor would need to guess that the Fragrance directory page would contain reviews.

    2) Reviews and More reviews tabs at the bottom of the home page were broken yesterday and today show only one review rather than the roll of recent reviews that the old site had.

    3) On the Fragrance Directory page, if viewed on a home computer, the entire screen is taken up with one recent review and images from three others – there’s no indication of the functionality of the page (which is to hunt for reviews).

    4) If one scrolls down here, the main part of the page is taken up with the ‘Highest rated’ rankings which are unlikely to change  soon – so the viewers will keep seeing this parade of bottles time after time. Not a crime but considering the loss of functionality I mention in the following point a shame.

    5) The ‘search by manufacturer’ is squeezed into a tiny column which one has to click on to get it to rank alphabetically. Then there is no option of just choosing one letter of the alpahabet – thus one has to go down the entire list to get to the brand one would like to look up.

    6) Today going from one brand to another via the manufacturer’s sidebar was a bit hit or miss, when I tried going from Lorenzo Villoresi to Jean-Charles Brosseau the page that would load would get stuck at Villorezi.

    7) When one reaches the reviews page for a particular perfume (presentation looks lovely here, by the way) it would really help to have the notes and manufacturing info that’s stuck at the bottom of the page at the top.

    8) On such pages, text for reviews has been squashed into one squat paragraph making them difficult to read. I take care to write in a readable and entertaining fashion – that includes breaking text into paragraphs. Really unappealing for the reader and off-putting for the writer to have their work treated like this. (Also, in some of my reviews apostrophes have disappeared making me come across as semi-literate.)

    9) Further, why is the design so hung up on uniformity? Now readers of longer reviews have to click a button with ‘more’ to get at the entire review. Why not have bigger and smaller boxes which would break up the page more attractively?

    10) Moving now to  one’s profile page. It’s AWFUL not to have the ‘my reviews’ option, so that one can keep track of how many reviews one has published on Basenotes. It is especially useful to non-paying members who have to wait until their reviews are vetted by a mod. This was a quick and easy way of keeping track of reviews and seeing whether they had appeared or were waiting in line. Similarly there is now no way of visiting the profile of someone whose reviews look interesting and seeing all that they’ve reviewed.

Most of us try to review to the best of our ability, putting in time and effort to give something back to the site we love – please don’t actively discourage us.

    11) It was fun to see who the ‘top’ reviewers were in numerical terms; would be good to have that little feature back.

When I visited the redesigned site my impression was largely positive, it is only now that it has sunk in how reviewing has been disadvantaged. I really can’t think of posting any more reviews with the current state of things. I hope some of these can be fixed.

Point 2) now looks as if it has been fixed - yay!

Completely agree with everything you said. I thought it was just me and that there was something I was missing, but your post lets me know otherwise. The reviews section and directory is really messed up.

I agree and not knowing how many reviews you have done or been able to see a list of yours and others reviews is a backwards step as it was so useful. It does seem to be a bit of a mess at the moment. I know their is a tab that says reviews in the profile page but when you press it does not bring up your reviews it seems to be a feed of what you have and others have posted.

I think this and the wardrobe function been just a list with the features removed are the two big bugbears, apart from that everything else is a improvement.

There are other two threads on reviews, it would be maybe more effective if they merged!

I expressed some of your points in another thread, agree with you on most of them.

I'll just add that now reviews appear instantly and it's very easy to edit or update.

I can't decide if I like it or not, I was so accustomed to the long weeks waiting !grin.gif

Thanks iodine, I wasn't aware reviews appeared instantly in the new design.

Can you tell me if things like paragraph breaks work with the new reviews? All my old reviews have got scrunched up into one big block of text.

There appears to be a link to see the latest reviews, but it seems to not work, so I'll add that to my list. I'm going to find out about seeing how to view reviews by a user (again there seems to be a link in the profile, but that doesn't work either)

Thanks Grant - I think most of us appreciate that these are early days and many things will change/improve over time. Also congratulations on making the transition so efficiently.

I think reviewers will shower you with blessings if you can get the 'view all reviews' function back - including one's own!

Yes. I also used to like just reading through the pages and pages of most recent reviews, and I appreciated the fact that they were shown in full text, so I didn't have to click through to read an entire long one.

I agree - when they are shown as several to a page (and not individually one per page) it is much less time consuming to go through them and pick out the ones one would like to read.

I agree with posters above concerning the loss of functionality with respect to reviews, which are at least as important as the forums, and often more useful. I want to be able to find all of a poster's reviews easily, not with numerous clicks and filters. And all reviews of a fragrance fully displayed page by page, without having to click on each one. Like we used to have. Sorry to be critical but the current presentation of the reviews is a definite backwards step IMO.

The more I browse the fragrance directory the more I'm puzzled!

I've just come across a review written in.... Portuguese! Nothing against it, but... shouldn't it be clear that BN is an English speaking site?! huh.gif

I don't want to look retro, but the possibility of having a review immediately published seems to encourage a certain haste in writing...

For me too the reviews section was the most appreciated on BN, and I think it was very cleverly conceived.

Here, I'm lost and, as gimmegreen says, it's kind of awkward even writing them...sad.gif (BTW: in the new layout punctuation, apostrophes and paragraphs seem to be OK- I guess it's the older reviews that have been compressed..)

Perhaps Basenotes no longer needs to be an English-only site?  Other languages are allowed on Fragrantica (just saying....)

Reviews being posted without having to be moderated (except for BN Plus members) is something that people have been wanting for a long time.

gimmegreen; l agree with everything you said, & Point 2 is still not working for me. But Grant; thanks for letting us know you will be working on this.

    1) Sure, nothing against using other languages, especially the most widely diffused- I only wonder what could happen if some top reviewers (Darvant, Alfarom, just to cite a few...) decide to write in their own language! Many users wouldn't be able to enjoy their considerations.

Vehicular languages are more... democratic, IMO.

    2) I know and appreciate it, I was just expressing my uneasiness towards what seems to ma a bit... hasty, almost cheap- I guess the graphic layout of the review section has much to do with this
