Wondering what's happening to Basenotes? The closest thing to an update ...

After taking the time to gather and compose the material in the thread Master List of Things to Fix on Basenotes, I, and I expect many others, hoped we would get some feedback on what might be do-able to restore functions to this beloved forum.

To our wish list Grant responded:

I understood "I'll pass this on" to mean that much of the site's management is now in the hands of Huddler. So, I sent a private message to HuddlerSteph:

Could you or some representative provide feedback on the issues of concern to our members at Basenotes?

Of course, you can't promise particular results by particular dates, but some expression of attention would be appreciated.

It wouldn't take much effort for one of us senior BNers to lead members away to another forum en masse, and I wouldn't choose to play that Pied Piper role, but if our concerns aren't respected and addressed, it's simply a natural outcome that we'd copy our reviews over to Fragrantica and post our SotDs there.

Weekly updates would be the professional way to handle this and would go a long way toward building a sense of trust, which is in short supply thus far.

    Steph responded:

So that I'm clear on my role here: I am simply here to answer technical support issues. That thread was forwarded off to our team and is under review. From there, Grant will be consulted and he, himself will speak for his site.

In regards to senior BN members, I do not have any comment or say in regards to their actions or intentions. Again, I work for Huddler and thus, am here to support the team that works with Grant.

    Thanks for understanding.

So, apparently we're waiting for Huddler to figure out if we'll get anything close to our original Basenotes back. Sure would be nice to get some reassurance directly from "the team." Yeah?

Well, I'm backing Grant in his massive & time-consuming effort to improve the site for the benefit of us all.

As far as I'm aware, the whole team is working as fast as they can, within the confines of a 24 hour day, to provide a final site under B/N control - Huddler are developing the site as I understand it and it's still in development.

But that's just my opinion and I fully appreciate that others are perfectly entitled to have different ones.

How are members to know? Look at all the complaints and questions peppering the site. BN's reputation is fracturing, and we who adored this site and promoted this site and contributed reviews and directed friends here have invested in its success. Certainly we are to be respected and given the courtesy of business-like communications.

    Thanks!

The fact that you composed a "master list of things to fix" does not mean the site owes you an immediate response as a self-appointed spokesperson. If you knew what an intensive effort it is to do something like this you might show more patience and respect to the site. Steph's response was exactly as it should be. The technical tweaking by Huddler will continue and Grant and the other admins will get to the other issues as soon as they can. Failure to immediately respond, considering the circumstances is not disrespectful. Publicly confronting the site about it is disrespectful.

Stuigi, you know I'll hang in here until no matter what. I'm a longtime fan of Basenotes and supporter of Grant. But Basenotes is a business, and I'm concerned about the many posts expressing worry and negativity. The membership will have greater patience if their concerns are acknowledged with courteous communication.

Instead of focusing on the negative, we should all be focusing on the positive.

I trust that Grant will do things in a timely manner given the enormity of the task. Things I'm sure will get better, but patience is paramount.

Don't want to appear as a 'brown noser' or anything, but I actually prefer the site now -- think it's improved a lot. I'm prepared to take a hit here -- just my opinion. Death - taxes and change -- they are all inevitable.

Agree - the site could not possibly have stayed as it was with the amount of daily traffic.

In my experience, nothing is ever perfect, but there are plenty of new features to play with & familiarise ourselves with at the moment whilst waiting for the site to be completed.

Given the number of members, the percentage currently bothering to complain shows the degree of appreciation and understanding of the task in hand.

There are some very interesting Info guides to read as well.

The percentage of members who actually bother topost is very small. If the rest are not complaining I wouldn't assume it is because they are understanding and appreciative of the task in hand.

Quarry has been a great proponent of Basenotes for years. I do feel she deserves some courtesy on that score alone. Me, I don't care much anymore what happens on BN. If I can get on, great. If not, that's fine, too. Actions speak louder than words.

    Apologies, lilybelle, no disrespect intended.

As a member of less than a year, I don't feel that it's my place to squawk about any site changes that are deemed necessary. That said, I do appreciate having an esteemed member in our midst, who is willing to ask the questions that many of us have. Thank you, Quarry.

    +1 Thank you Quarry.

I commend Quarry for her immense work, positivity and support of BN. I also appreciate Grant and his work to improve the site. No one is underestimating the immensity of the project.

Going back to Quarry's original comment, yes unfortunately the site's reputation has been fractured for a long time. I was shocked to read some views on another thread which provided some outside links. I felt I had been very naive. However, I really don't see how that is a concern of the Administration.

I say this because I have come to realize that businesses (and BN is one), even businesses with tough competition, care only so much to retain their original "loyal" customers these days. After a certain point they open the door and show you the exit. So I'm not surprised at the less-than-savory response that Quarry received. Really sad. Just to make some comments doesn't mean there's negativity or demands going on and that there's a need to quash it.

I agree with Lilybelle completely, on all counts. I don't think the percentage of people that are okay with the horrendous losses this site has incurred is very high. Why doesn't Huddler or whoever is in charge take a poll, I think you would be stunned to find out what people are really thinking. The way things were handled was really poor in my opinion. If things go on this wayI think you will risk losing the majority of your paying members. The responses to Quarry, one of this sites most outstanding members, is beyond comprehension to me. The lengths she went to, to make a list of the problems we all feel need to be addressed, shows how much she cares about this site. We all care about this site, we want it to succeed, but it just isnclass="
