Basenotes Plus

    Basenotes Plus

I apologize if a discussion of this nature is not appropriate but I am curious and I think feedback on this will help both the owners of this website and the users.

For those who do not know, Basenotes Plus is a paid membership of this website which gives members who pay certain benefits.  Most members on here are not, but there are many who are and I haven't heard any bad things about it.

    1. Have you used Basenotes Plus before or are you thinking about signing up for it?

2a. If you are a Basenotes Plus Member, how do you feel about Basenotes Plus

2b. If you aren't a Basenotes Plus Member, what is keeping you from signing up?

Personally, I haven't tried Basenotes Plus.  To me, I don't have a lot of disposable income so BNPlus is something I'll have to live without for a while. Also, what I perceive to be 90% of the benefits of using Basenotes are already free so I don't know if I would pay for the other 10%.  I may not contribute financially, but I have contributed hundreds of profound, sometimes inane but overall loveable threads.  I'm not trying to dissuade everyone from signing up, but for me personally, it doesn't provide enough benefits to motivate me, personally, to sign up for it.

    Your thoughts?

I was on BN for 2 years before deciding to become a supporting member.  So I've been BN Plus for nearly 4 years now.  I didn't join for the benefits; I felt that the site was worth supporting.

That said, the perks I've appreciated most were:

    • the 1000 private message storage (I use messaging a lot when doing sample passes; in fact, I use it a lot anyway.)  Now that we are on the new platform, I really don't know how many messages non-supporting members have and whether  BN Plus offers any real advantage.

    • blocking the ads.

Not as important (but nice) were:

    • the ability to choose a title (I have "Lifelong Sniffaholic") but some members seem to have lost that

    • the choice of wardrobe icon (but we all seem to have lost our icons)

    • the BN Plus Badge (but mine is sadly absent)

    • There is a BN Plus forum that is mostly inactive.

Money is tighter now, and to be honest I am not sure I will renew when my current year's membership expires.  It would be good for us all to have a clarification of what the BN Plus perks are under the new Huddler system.

Yeah, the benefits are very modest and it's largely a donation more than anything else.

To answer the OP's question #1 - No.
I've been a member of Basenotes for 6.5 years, and was a Plus member for a year, maybe two, but not currently.

30 Roses has done a good job of describing the benefits, which I feel were a nice enhancement to using Basenotes. I especially liked the increased space for PMs, as I always seem to be struggling with that. It also helped to be able to eliminate some of those annoying ads. The minor benefits just made the experience a bit more fun.

I stopped being a Plus member when the site became more unstable and the Directory was apparently being ignored. I didn't want to support a site which had maintenance problems and was otherwise stagnating.

So I'm still waiting to see what happens with the makeover. The site is quicker and more stable (although I have experienced several errors while refreshing pages and have had my Safari browser crash twice), but I want to see if functionaliy is restored, especially regarding the bare bones mobile version. If things get headed in the right direction I will become a supporter again.

I don't think it's clear yet which of the Plus features will be available under the new Basenotes.

Same story here. I was a paying member for a couple of years (and also a "tea" donator - symbol apparently now gone) but then stopped.

I actually like the new layout, but the loss of the functional wardrobe and wear count (SotD) removes the feature I used and enjoyed most.

They're trying to re-instate SOTD and Wardrobe functionality as priorities, as I understand it from Grant's post yesterday, so hopefully we should see better functionality in various areas soon.

I am taking a "wait and see" approach personally to these priorities.  So far we have heard talk about discussions with Huddler taking place, but until any timetables or actual functionality changes occur or are disclosed it is just that...  talk. I should point out I am not questioning the validity of the statements, but rather saying that at this point they are just statements.

In my case, the benefits of BN Plus membership post site conversion are quite murky aside from satisfying the need to financially contribute, and I join others in hoping for a better delineation of what they specifically are nowadays (especially as current BN Plus members have already paid before the site structure conversion)...

BN plus members opt to support BN by paying.

What about BN opting to recognize contributing members?

I imagine this place would be very different without certain members' input here.

I'm not talking about post counts.

    I mean generally recognized contributors.

Agree, Hedonist - for me personally Plus is not something that I expect anything from (or require any indication of) and understand that many members make huge contributions without any visible recognition, or often any thanks from those members whom they so generously choose to help.

Maybe that's something else to be considered on the 'To do' list?

Think about it for a minute.

What would BN forums looks like if those 40 or 50 experienced members stopped contributing.

I can't bear to even imagine...

I was a BN plus contributing member for a couple or several years. The BN Plus forum is as quiet as the morgue. The additional pm storage capacity was nice, but I considered my paying membership more of a contribution to the running of the site. I discontinued it recently (even though it was nominal - $5 monthly charged to my paypal account) because I finally realized that I was a bit of a chump. Other Fragrance sites, whatever you think of the quality of their content, run very well without users' financial support. BNers were promised an overhaul last July, I think. I grew tired of the crashes and promises. I don't believe them anymore. We'll see what happens. I don't mean to bash BN. I think things will sort themselves out. Change is inevitable. But I do not plan to be a BN plusser any time soon again.

It will look like the BN of the future (which is now). See Renaissance Man's post in Quarry's thread. I can't post a link (tapping on kindle fire). I'm not sure that it would matter to anyone but those 40 or 50, sadly.

I never thought twice about any benefits it might bring.  I've enjoyed the hobby and credit BN as a valued resource that put me in touch with frags I otherwise may never have connected with.  For that, given the obvious tech issues, and given how much I was spending on frags... I thought kicking in a few bucks for the cause was the least I could do.

    Now... for a little mini-rant.

I've grown a little disappointed in, what I'd call, the general philosophy of the place.  In my mind's eye I see two basic design options in that regard: (1) to be primarily an encyclopedic resource, a library if you will; OR, 2) to be primarily a never ending 'cocktail party' full of the current chatter from the current members wishing to attend.

Personally, I'd like to see (1).  BN is more of a (2).

I think someone might come along and do both (1) AND (2) in a 'WikiScents', or such, format that incorporates all that is worth saying about a given frag or topic on its own single page, with the means of keeping the most useful/helpful information (by way of member voting) at the forefront.  For starters, that'd include fusing what we currently see at BN in the directory with the Fragrantica features of note prominence, similar scents, and a vehicle to assess, vote, and bring to the forefront the more valued reviews (I see BN now has a like feature. Those not making the cut fall off the main page).  In other words, and not to drone on, there have been so many good reviews and good threads/posts made by some really knowledgable members that are long gone.  As noted, the better reviews will hopefully surface due to the recent changes.  However, it's a shame that most of the better historical thread/posts have not been 'stickied' and are effectively buried in the muck and mire of the inane.  Sure the search feature whittles down the task of finding a specific thread/post, but it is often time consuming and not easy.  The better threads/posts deserve more prominence, with easy access.  Why not allow the cream to rise to the top?
