    thanks

I have heard some people getting treated badly. I personally have not had any problems with in person visits to the store.

Could you elaborate on why your experience was so bad?

I did have a problem with them last year on an order I placed on-line. They were out of stock and failed to inform me until I inquired a couple of days later. The advise I received from a fellow member of basenotes, was to call any on-line merchant before placing an order, which I have done since.

As far as my more recent experience with Aedes, they have been great. I have purchased most of the Malle perfumes for my splits from them. They have been very accommodating, even when placing my order late in the day and shipping the same day. Their sample policy is better than most, giving you a choice of seven samples with even the smallest of orders. The last order I placed, I just requested them to send a random set of samples, which they did. Not seven samples, but eleven samples, many were factory samples.

They can be a little stand-offish (snobby) on the phone, and from what I have been told by people who have visited their store, it is about the same.

I guess my one gripe I would have, wish they would offer discounts once in a while, but the way I look at it, Luckyscent does a big e-commerce business and they only discounts they offer is free freight, but only if you know that months code.

I've ordered from them more than once. I have no gripes and would order again.

I've ordered my Heeley Sel Marin from them...Not the most personable bunch of people but the product was fresh and fairly quick shipping...I will say samples from them does take FOREVER to get sometimes....LuckyScent is my favorite of them all...

I'm looking forward to my visit to NYC (I've got 7 nights there) - MiN, Osswald and Aedes are all high on my list to visit.

When I go into a store, it's usually to drop some cash, but I'm always loathe to hand my money over to a store where I feel a sales associate just can't be bothered.

If I'm being made to feel like I'm an inconvenience my intention to buy often goes right out the window and I leave.

I'm keen to see how I get treated by the various stores in NYC :)

MiN's great -- BIG sample vials for the grabbing. Aedes were fine with me last time I was there -- helpful, but not overly pushy. I've had better service, but I've also had much worse. The shop itself is a bit claustrophobic when compared with MiN or Scent Bar.

Hit up both Bergdorf spots (both sides of 5th ave) as they were very generous with samples last time I was there. The Tom Ford, HdP, MFK, and Kilian reps were all really friendly, and they genuinely seemed to enjoy chatting perfumes with me.

If you can make it, head over to Brooklyn for CB I Hate Perfume, as well. They're closed on Sundays, but it's worth a sniff.

Bummer to hear about your experience, OP!

Marianela at Henri Bendels is a wonderful person to deal with. I highly recommend her.

Sorry for threadjacking (I still want to hear about the OP's experience @ Aedes) but what is to be found @ Henri Bendels? I've never even heard of them before.

EDIT - oop never mind, found this old article, I'm sure the range has expanded since then http://www.nstperfume.com/2007/09/30/henri-bendel-shopping-for-perfume-in-new-york/

Aedes - some days they are good and some days not so good to work with. It didn't used to be like this, but it is now it seems.  But, Aedes is an honest company that aims high in the area of fragrance offerings.  I have bought from them thirty or so fragrances.  My own frustration with them comes from their late shipment of a prepaid order (2 months after promised) and totally forgot to put in the samples I requested too. When I asked about Where is My Order? they were very short and dismissive floating out new false promises.  But, I did eventually get it - no samples - but the lack of service attitude will probably keep me from ordering their again unless I have no other options.

Sometimes the passion for a subject is gone, or there are competing issues, customer relations are often the first to show signs of despair that foreshadows a change to come.  Who knows? This may be with the individual that you work with or the store itself.   I hope that is not the case with Aedes, but their service and attitude with customers has eroded in the last year or so. How can you sustain a business like that for very long? Just my opinion.

If you work long enough with any of these suppliers you are bound to be disappointed at some time or another.  If it is any consolation I have seen as much apathy and disregard for the customer at all of these other niche shops - each is a different story:   Le Labo (Nolita), Nieman Marcus (Dallas), CB IHate Perfumes (Brooklyn), and Luckyscent (this last year).  Each has their own form of unhelpfulness but they also offer lots of positive help. For every disappointing experience I have had dozens of positive ones with all of these, including Aedes.

They are the worst.  Ordered something online indicating that I will be stopping by to pick it up.  When I got there, my order is not available and was told that they made a mistake and sold it to someone earlier.  Geez...

I ordered some samples a while ago, all went alright, no complaints.

I've ordered from Aedes in the past (4 or 5 years ago) and had no complaints, but so far my recent experience has not been impressive.

I placed an order for a Malle bottle last weekend w/FedEX ground shipping.  I received a confirmation email immediately which said I'd receive another email once the item has shipped..

    Monday.. Nothing

    Tuesday...Nothing

    Wednesday...Nothing

Thursday - I sent them a courteous email inquiring about my order - got a very brief response saying "We expect that to ship tomorrow w/tracking# to follow by email.."

It's now 7pm Friday night and... I've still heard nothing.

Their price was exactly the same as Barney's as well as Malle's website, I considered both of them first but figured I'd give Aedes a shot since they stock several other fragrances I'm interested in purchasing.

I kind of wish I'd chosen to purchase it elsewhere.

Obviously it's not the end of the world and I'm confident I'll receive my order eventually, but if you're looking for same-day, or next day, or the day-after-that shipping - you might want to consider other options.

It's always best to check inventory with them before placing order. I purchased Dries Van Noten over the past weekend and received in Florida yesterday.
