A few questions

    A few questions

Hello, basenoters! I'd like to use this thread to ask a few questions.

Is it true that if you use unscented moisturizing lotions before applying your scents that you can increase the life of your fragrance? If so, does anyone use any that they would recommend?

Also, here are my scents as of now:

    Azzaro Chrome

    Givenchy Play

    Davidoff Echo

Even though I enjoy each of these fragrances and I plan to continue using them at least until these bottles are gone, I would not mind hearing opinions about them. What type of image do you associate with a man who wears these?

Whenever I get around to buying another fragrance, what type should I look for? I want something different from these but something that is undeniably masculine. I'm a 23 year old college student if that means anything. I wear a beard all year. Not a huge bushy thing like Grizzly Adams, but more of a well-kept, short beard such as the one sported by George Clooney. I don't want to wear something that makes me smell young. I want something crisp and sophisticated. I live in Pennsylvania so I'll be looking for something that holds up well in the fall/winter.

    Thank you!

Yes, I've heard it does increase the life of your fragrance. However, I don't wear lotion, so I don't have any suggestions for you.

However, I do have a strong suggestion for a fragrance that you should check out - Comme des Garcons 2 Man.

I too am a short stubbly beard kinda guy. I can't stand being clean shaven, not to mention the irritation involved with having thick hair and shaving close to the skin.

I use Aveeno unscented lotion prior to applying scent and it does help me with longevity.

Keeping your skin moist will prolong the scent

    Honest opinions:

I like Givenchy's Play quite a bit and often receive compliments.

I think Chrome is boring but pleasant.

As far as recommending something, it's tough but something on the more sophisticated side that you might enjoy would be Chanel's Platinum Egoiste.

Any regular drugstore body lotion will do.

Since you wear a beard and probably want to be appear as more macho and sophisticated than, say, athletes wearing sports frag, I'm wondering whether you could be a little daring and try some leathers. Leathers also tend to be quite warm and intense, and so work well for the winter.  Most of the ones I'm thinking about tend to be slightly more expensive or difficult to find, though. There's the very classic Knize Ten or the ballsy, but still elegant, Rien (by Etat Libre d'Orange). Aramis is easy to find and cheap, but probably it's a touch too rough for what you want. Easy to find there's also Bulgari Black, which has an interesting rubber note.

Play is ok. The other two are very bad synthetic to me. What kind of smells do you like?

I'd say play is the best of the 3 with chrome close behind, and yes unscented lotion will help a lot.
As for a new fragrance if I were you I'd try out Terre d'Hermes

What does that one smell like? How does it differ from the types I've already purchased? Sorry, I am very new to fragrances!

How expensive are we talking? I have to admit I'm also a bit afraid of something that smells like rubber. I may just take your advice, though.

See I'm not even too sure what kind of smells I like. I've only ever been exposed to maybe 10 different colognes. My friend wears Versace Man Eau Fraiche I think it's called. I liked that one though I didn't buy one of my own. He also has Le Male and 1 million. I could see myself wearing any of those. But there's one in particular he had that was very interesting, though I can't remember the proper name of it. Something about 212? I don't know.

Regarding the prices, They are not too expensive, they go for $70-$80 per 50ml bottle (less per ml for the 100 ml bottles).

    http://www.luckyscent.com/shop/detail.asp?itemid=47702

The problem is that they are hard to find.

Bulgari Black doesn't smell only like rubber, it has a rubber note together with the rest, which makes it quite fun, as if you were at once very sophisticated but you also knew your way around your engine. In any case, this is not difficult to find in store, so you may get a chance to smell it easily.

Incidentally, I second also rynegine's suggestion of Comme des Garcons 2 man. It smells like lemon, incense, and snuffed candles. Which sounds weird but it is actually really nice and wearable. And it is, indeed, both very crisp and very sophisticated (in an avant-garde way, though, not in a macho way).

You should give Jo Malone Oud and Bergamot a try I'd you live close to a Neiman Marcus. I get mor compliments on that fragrance than any the 30+ ones I own.

I recently bought TdH and its become my signature scent. I receive compliments every time I wear it. It's got an orange note with a little fresh powder but its awfully masculine at the same time. I could see this being a formal scent but it works great on my skin in every situation. I'm glad I went with the EDT. I chose this over Hanea Mori HM EDP. I may get that next if I can't find LIDGE
