I had SUCH a similar experience as you're having. The first vetiver I ventured out to try was Eau Sauvage -- and I HATED it. I mean HATED it. It really took me aback; I like to see myself as a retro kind of guy, and it seemed -- based on what I'd read -- to be right up my alley.
Over time, though, I found many fragrances I loved turned out to be vetiver-centric, or vetiver-influenced. I own and love:
Comme des Garcons 2Man
Comme des Garcons vettiveru
The Different Company Sel de Vetiver
I don't even know if I could find a commonality those four have (besides the obvious fact I love them) -- except they are known for being vetiver fragrances.
That's a long way of saying: You hated Guerlain Vetiver, and that's okay. And there's a chance vetiver really just isn't your thing. But keep trying stuff that sounds interesting to you, because people use vetiver in wildly different and interesting ways, and you might end up liking one (or five!) yet.
EDIT -- I see drseid said the same thing as me. Sorry for the repetition!
