I'm interested in Shalimar and Mitsouko (I'm a college aged caucasian male weight lifter with long hair, if that matters, hah).

Any suggestions on which type(s) to get?

I've noticed different types, ie. edt or edp Mitsouko, and Shalimar Parfum Initial vs Regular (which also has different strength name variations..).

    Suggestions?

Please avoid suggesting 'a witch hunt' for some vintage formulation(s) or paying a large amount more than the ones (current formulations?) on say.. LilyDirect, Fragrancenet, etc.

If you do suggest a vintage, please give a source and/or let it be easily obtainable via online order.

    Thank you, :).

Talking about current formulations (I love the various vintage versions of Shalimar - very addictive)- I prefer Shalimar EDP to Mitsouko EDP. I really love the warm and smooth blending of citrus, vanilla and leather. It is powdery but I find it warm/sensual/even skanky and unisex (more masculine than Dior Homme to my nose).

I think sampling Mitsouko and the many versions of Shalimar would be helpful for you as there are many negative reviews for these two.

    I'd go for Shalimar EDP.

The vintage Shalimar EdC is easily available on ebay (I get more citrus in this).

Good advice. Sampling both of these is crucial, as they are quite different both from each other and from current mainstream tastes. The current EdP is good for both, I think, but don't judge them straight out of the bottle.

The 'many negative reviews' mentioned above needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, since both Mitsouko and Shalimar are widely held to be among the crowning achievements of French perfumery.

I would be remiss if I did not take the opportunity to extoll the virtue of my favorite, and signature scent, Mitsouko. As in all thing fashion, what works for you is the expression of who you are; a statement if you will. I like and use Shalimar as well, of course, but my favorite remains Mitsouko. Good luck in your fragrance endeavors.

I have a .5oz bottle of the shalimar extrait (current formulation) and its amazing. Can easily be found at neiman's, Nordstrom or con maur. Good luck in your hunt. I just purchased a 15ml bottle of mitsouko pure parfum off eBay. When I receive it, I'll let you know how it is.

Agree that Shalimar and Mitsouko are so different from each other that it would be a good idea to test both. Shalimar Parfum Initial is a totally different fragrance, so don't mistake it for the original. I love both perfumes in Eau de Parfum or Eau de Toilette (the horror!), and think you could easily wear either if you like it.

Personally I prefer Mitsouko but Shalimar is very nice too and perhaps easier to appreciate.

If you havn't tried it I would be cautious about buying any scents designed for women.
I am yet to find one that I am comfortable with (and I am far from a macho sort of guy)
