Understanding changes perception, as true with scent as it is with the other senses. Really interesting how that works!
Imagine you don't understand Chinese. Someone speaks it, you hear a bunch of sounds, but chances are, you can't repeat those sounds back.
Imagine you understand Chinese but speak it poorly. Someone speaks it, you clearly hear *words*, and can repeat them back, you just don't know what they mean.
Same sound, same physical phenomena at work. One person hears words, one person just hears a string of sounds.
