Layering - Marketing ploy? Or does it really work?

Layering - Marketing ploy? Or does it really work?

    Hey guys,

Last night I got a little bored and experimented with layering some of my Lush fragrances...I layered Breath of God with a shot of Vanillary....smelled fantastic! Then I took some Creed's out and did Royal Oud and OV.....not bad either!

But I'm wandering is layering a new marketing ploy from fragrance counters to get us to buy more fragrance or is it the real deal?

Let me know what you guys think AND which ones do you like to layer? What combinations work great? Do you use two fragrances from the same house or do you prefer to use two different scents from two different houses?

    Thanks for your thoughts!

IMO it's never the purpose of a parfumeur to get his creations mixed with other ones.

So I never layer frags but I respect people who do and enjoy it.

True....i didn't before either but was just experimenting with it....and found it quite nice...

I'm always afraid that with potent scents that it will come across too brash and loud with all that fragrance sprayed

Never tried layering is something i would like to try just not confident enough to try it

I don't do it. Don't like doing it. I buy a fragrance because I love that one and want to wear it.

Jo Malone is very into layering etc, so I tried it with their perfumes. All I got was the last one I sprayed

I LOVE to layer. I generally experiment when I'm not going to be going anywhere like say in the evening and then check it during the course of the night - if the combo works it then gets to go"out". I also, and some of you may want to turn your eyes away now for a bit, use the AXE or BOD sprays for a "base" of their similar scented EDTs/Colognes etc - this tends to extend their life and deepen them in many cases. One of my favorite combos is AXE Music (Tuscan Leather's VERY poor cousin who lives across the tracks) and Dirty English, this will keep the normally part timer DE working a full 7-8 hours. Another that gets a lot of compliments is AXE Kilo and Joop or Cadillac. BOD Fresh Guy and KC Reaction are like a perfect union and it extends the longevity by at least 2-3 hours hours, same with BOD Black and Armani Code. Caeser's Man added to the reformulated Drakkar makes it pretty much like the "old Drakkar" for those who miss the old powerhouse Drakkar. One more combo that really amps up the appeal of an old classic is a patchouli oil (I use just 2 drops of Sunshine Spa) added to Z-14 to which a bit of Aqua Velva Musk has been added as a base, I sometimes use a little Jovan Musk for Men as a base instead - this has drawn several compliments from total strangers and well just play around with stuff - it's fun and you can really bolster or "tweak" some lower end but dependable scents into something even better than they are - but as usual - JMO

    I layered

Le Male + Cool Water Deep

wowwww what a great fragrance !!!!

I don't layer because i don't want to mess it up and smell something weird

If I buy a quality fragrance I expect it to smell good without layering.

Not saying layering is bad, I just don't have the skills necessary to do it!!

Me neither deon....I think you just have to kind of play around with the scents to find a combo you like....I did it at night so if it sucks I can shower it off....

I expect the SA would -- wants you to buy both. The SA's at Bond are keen on pushing this now.

Yes, they were right next to the TF people and were trying similar things. I walked out with nothing but fun experimenting. The above combo was only one I enjoyed.
