Have you sampled anything from this house? Do you own any fragrances? Do they make great smelling scents, or are they just gimmicks?
In my opinion, while I would never say any house just sells "gimmicks," Etat's marketing and promotion is far more interesting than the actual scents.
I don't remember how many I've tried (maybe 8?), and I really did not enjoy any of them.
But the house has fans, and they'll let you know which ones to try.
Whoa whoa whoa... GIMMICK?
I own 7 bottles from this line and none of them are a gimmick. They have their own style for sure and it's best to ignore the marketing or to slowly just accept it as part of who they are. Definitely a line to look into, they really can be quite different than anything else on the market.
I'd recommend staying away from Secretions Magnifique...though it does have people that swear it's not as gross as it appears...I can't get around that one...
The rest are mostly fair game. Like This, Jasmin et Cigarette, Fils de Dieu, and Toms of Finland are a few of my favorites...and try Rien if you think you can handle it :)
I've tried everything from ELDO, and own quite a few of them. Their marketing--especially their early marketing--can seem gimmicky and give the impression that the fragrances aren't to be taken seriously. Also, having Secretions Magnifiques as one of their standard-bearing scents doesn't help! But really, there are a lot of fantastic scents in their lineup. The very best, IMO, are Like This, Tom of Finland, Bijou Romantique, Noel au Balcon, Je Suis un Homme, Fils de Dieu, Afternoon of a Faun, and Nombril Immense. Jasmin et Cigarette is one of the most popular from the lineup, although I'm not a big fan myself.
It's a great line! The approach just adds camp humor and I'm sure scares off a lot of folks (at least I'd like to think it does).
Rien, Tom of Finland, Encens et Bubblegum, Fat Electrician, and Tilda Swinton Likes This are all pretty great. Secretions Magnifique isn't as scary as people make it out to be, but it's hardly wearable. It's much more indicative of a provocative art concept than anything.
FWIW, I've actually gotten compliments on Secretions Magnifiques. But one person--an ex-gf--almost vomited and made me promise never to have it in the house again.
I'm not a big vetiver fan, but even taking that into account, I'm not a big fan of Fat Electrician.
And anyone who loves leathers really has to try Rien.
