Help: Choosing a Gift for My Boyfriend

Help: Choosing a Gift for My Boyfriend

    Hello Ladies and Gents,

My Boyfriend and I have been seeing each other for six months. I am 19 and he will be 24 in a few weeks time. I could use your help as I have no idea what to get him for his birthday.†

He is extremely selective about his colognes so I don't think he would appreciate me buying perfume "blind" for him.

He dresses well and is rather old fashioned (but stylish). He likes to wear a hat and cufflinks when we go out little things like that.

This is my first relationship and needless to say I really like him. I want to impress him and get him something special that he'll remember forever.

    Any ideas?

Oh I almost forgo myt preferred budget would be between £1000 to £1200. †

    Welcome!

You must have added a zero to your budget, because with that budget you can go to the fancy Arabian oil stores in London (like Arabian oud, ASAQ, etc) and get him what gulf billionnaires get.

For 100-120bp you can find many niche perfumes. A brand to look at coould be Serge Lutens. These tend to be more oriental, spicy, rich. Examples of stuff to try would be Ambre sultan (spicy), Arabie (herbal bitter), Borneo (patchouli), Jeux de peau (gourmand).

Another very classical masculine is Knize Ten, not expensive but hard to find: an elegant but butch leather, recalls Vienna aristocrats on bygone eras.

If you want to give a funny, mischievous personal spin, you could check into the French niche brand Etat Libre d'Orange. they make very solid, often classical perfumes, but use humorous logos (now sadly removed from the bottles). Examples here could be Je suis un homme (which means "I am a man", and whose original label design included visual explanation of the statement), which is the most classical citrus-wood-leather. Or Tom of finland (don't google at work), a smooth classical suede.

    If I were you.

I would take him to a boutique and have him pick for himself

Thank you both for your replies,†Cacio I didn't make a mistake my budget is up to†twelve hundred pounds. =)

I'm sure he has a few bottles from Serge Lutens but I don't recall ever hearing of†Etat Libre d'Orange so†that's something I will check out.†I'm not†convinced perfume is what I want to get him as he has a lot already.†

That is a good idea Tony but I would really like to†surprise†him if I can't find something else then I will keep this option as a backup.

    Thanks again.

You said that you're not convinced that perfume is what you want to get him. Other than the cufflinks he wears, is there any other jewelry he enjoys wearing that could fit into your budget. How about a nice casual everyday watch?

    another thing.

if he is extremely selective about frag's

ELDO is not the way to go..

    They have extreme stuff

He wears cufflinks tie clips but no rings or†bracelets which is a shame really. †I'd love to get him a wrist watch maybe even a pocket watch †but he has several very expensive watches that cost way beyond what I would like to spend at the moment. †If it was me I would not want to wear a cheaper watch if I had something better.

Thanks for the warning Tony I went out and sampled some Etat Libre d'Orange today. †Not his style at all plus I hated just about everything so that's a big no no.

A question for any men who happen to read this thread. I noticed my Boyfriend's wallet is a bit on the small side for what he needs to carry around. † If it was your birthday would you be happy with say a wallet/travel wallet? †If so what brand would want?†

Thanks to all of you who took the time to comment. :)

You have a point there. If he has expensive, high quality timepieces, no sense in having him take a step down.

Wouldn't you guys advise her to get a vintage discontinued item off of eBay? That being said, could you list down the colognes he owns that would help narrowing down that kind of fragrances he likes. As a last option I'd say take him to a tailor and get his measurements for a suit and gift him that? But that would spoil the surprise.

Last year on my 23rd birthday my girlfriend made me food which I made her hand feed me xD. (Her poor fingers)

And finally I'll throw in a little horoscope In here, your bf is an Earth Snake as myself according to the Chinese zodiac (In my opinion it's the most accurate) and he can be lazy, very lazy when he feels like it and hyperactive when he wants to be. He likes style in his life and according to what you say he's into the classy, timeless style. He would like something rare which can go into his collection vault or things that aren't common around him, so watches are out of the picture with that budget. Personally I'd like getting a perfume as a gift, I may not love it but I would like to keep it around as something SHE gifted. It would be even better if it is quite close to the kind which he uses for special occasions but only in the vibe not similar in smell. If I had to say then I think he likes soft subtle (graceful or charming) fragrances but I may be totally wrong.

Actually, I think Tony has a great suggestion, if you do it right.

For example, assuming that you HAVE a boutique in your city, you could arrange a surprise appointment at his favorite designer, to show him their exclusive fragrance collection. Chanel, Dior, or Hermes all have outstanding collections of very unique and artistic scents. So you're having some drinks by candlelight and suddenly the taxi is at the door. The destination is a surprise, of course. He gets to sample their wares, and with your budget, he can get pretty much whatever he wants. Then you're off to dinner and the rest of the evening!

I don't know what his taste is, but Hermès has an amazing selection of guy jewelry (cufflinks and the like) and a diverse assortment of fragrances. They manage to maintain an old-school collection of stuff (including some classic fragrances that sound like his cup of tea), while keeping a cutting-edge artistic image. I would love for my wife to drag me through there with the intent to get me something! happy.gif

List some of his frag's and we can go from their..

Or you can always take the easy way out and get him Aventus..

And no I would not want a wallet on my birthday from my girlfriend

Save yourself some cash and get him a GPS mapping system for his ride...guarantee he will say it's the best gift he ever got.
^ GPS is a great idea! And no more fights over map vs. asking for directions.

How about you gift him me so that both of you can adopt me and spoil me like a baby.... jk :D†

Honestly, if my girlfriend wanted to spend 1,200 pounds on me, I would want her to buy me maybe 5-10 fragrances that I've been wanting to get but are too expensive.†

Other than that, I'd want a watch but that's out of the question.

A nice vacation trip somewhere would be nice also. A weekend trip or something for 1,200 pounds should be more than enough.†

If you don't like his style of clothing, just buy him some high end designer wear that you'd like to see him in.†

    haaaaay there.
you're darn generous when it comes to that boy. he's pretty lucky.

i agree with the idea of planning a small getaway together.
or maybe a spa day at a luxe spa together?†

or maybe take him to his fave place and let him chose the item of his choice?

or cuffinks of his fave character? (for example, batman cufflinks if he's a fanatic!)†
