Hi guys, I'm only 18 and am totally new to the world of wonderful scents! I'm itching to get a proper perfume for myself (usually use body mists or body lotions from TBS, VS, B&BW..) and I want something nice and suitable for my age smile.gif

I tend to lean towards musky, spicy and oriental scents! I like fruity scents in the bottle, but they don't suit me. I can also pull off some masculine scents but I'm not looking for anything that will hit people right in the face (if you know what I mean) but unfortunately I haven't come across any nice and subtle ones that match my tastes!
I'd preferably not get anything that'd run up to hundreds of dollars too smile.gif

So... Any recommendations or tips on how I should choose perfume? Do I really need to go through the process of spritzing some on me and waiting for an hour or so? smile.gif

Animale - Animale  (get the double name) - the single Animale is still great to me - but for starting off get the double named one)

Diesel Plus Plus =- nice fruity, creamy, amber vanilla

CK Shock  - nice amber - sweeter fragrance - some powder

Azzaro Pour Homme - just a great scent

And all of these last a good while - I hate a great smell that does not last 20 min.... And they are not the uber pricy ones that everyone is always talking about.  A good place to start.

But also -  go look up the reviews for these and others here in Basenotes, add some common sence and some salt -  and decide for yourself -

Sorry didn't realize you were a female. Forget my suggestion.

YSL L'Homme- perfect subtle young man's scent

Prada Amber- great clean/fresh barbershop style frag

Armani Diamonds- Nice inoffensive oriental/gourmand that gets compliments

    Welcome!

For something supersmooth, you can try the Narciso Rodriguez (for her and musk for either sex). For spicy oriental (but not too strong), there's the old classic, Estee Lauder Youth Dew. Sales assistants will probably tell you it's a grandma perfume that young people don't like, but it is actually a wonderful oriental with a touch of spice and musk that still works perfectly.

Some might disagree that this scent might be mature for your age but I would suggest to sample Timbuktu by L'Artisan. You will get musk, spice, oriental and then some smile.gif Yes, it fits your budget. Spot on.

    Welcome to Basenotes!

LOL - He is! :coolold: - But still a great recommendation.  Women love that scent, but guys do, to.  I think it's actually very unisex, and I would love it on a woman.  The only thing "masculine" about L'Homme is the name, as far as I'm concerned.

I do think that you have to try scents on skin, unless you're willing to wear them on clothing, in which case they smell very much like they do on paper.  That is always an option, too.  And some women like to wear fragrance on the ends of their hair (it can damage hair, so better at the tips where it will get cut).  That's why samples are so useful - you can get a REAL sense for what it will smell like all day long.

My recommendation to you is to check out Voyage d'Hermès.  It's available in Sephora, but I usually see it on the men's side, even though it was designed to be unisex.  And Jour d'Hermès just came out for women - that's a nice one, too.

    Welcome, evangelskies.

If you like musky, oriental, spicy, you might want to try Shalimar by Guerlain - the classic. Age-wise, I think it suits anyone; my best friend in high school wore it.

Also, maybe the original Gucci for women, in the translucent brown bottle.

Cacio's recommendation of Youth Dew is good, and you may also want to try Estee Lauder's Sensuous Noir while you're there. Prada Candy might be worth a try, too.

And yes, you should try a couple on at a time and see how you like them after an hour or two, or longer preferably. Perfumes can change dramatically on your skin over time and you'll want to be sure that you'll like the new perfume all the way through. It's a pain but if you're going shopping you can test a couple, then do something else (like have lunch) for an hour or so and then decide. In the end it will save you buying things you don't like.

    Welcome !

+1 for Gucci by Gucci and Shalimar as Kagey said .

Perhaps try Opium and also +1 for Youth Dew ...also Cinnabar.

Coco Noir by Chanel is a great scent as is the original Coco .

I dont think everyone realizes that the OP is a female. I think....

Do not get Azzaro pour Homme. I like Tom Ford Violet Blonde on a girl. Do you have a Nordstrom or Sephora near you so you can get a few samples and test them out?

L by Lolita Lempicka, Moschino by Moschino.

Yes, I do have Sephora near me! I don't go there much because of the pushy sales staff though. I'll go there this weekend and give all the recommendations from you guys a try! smile.gif Hahaha sorry to confuse you guys, I'm definitely a female lol! I just happen to like masculine scents too.

I've also been looking for a scent which I came across a few years ago- I walked past an outdoor exhibition by Sephora for a perfume sale and they gave me a sample, and I really liked it. I sometimes smell it around so I guess it must be a pretty popular scent?
It was kinda fresh smelling, a little bit sweet but not too cloying, and not very musky if I remember. I'm not an expert so I can't describe it much... But I think the packaging or the perfume might be gold/ yellow.

I was going to recommend this. I love the earthy herbal, yet clean vibe going on here. I'm not sure about longevity, but I might acquire this someday. It doesn't smell dated at all.
