I don't know....
I'm around 63 bottles right now and there's 2 that I have been eyeing (1899 and Cuir Ottoman). But I think before I get those, I'll get rid of some other stuff. I'm realizing that once you have over about 35, you just don't get to wear everything that much and a lot of stuff goes to waste.
There's a lot of stuff that smells good, but doesn't wear so well or they're not that versatile...and these are the ones that I'll probably get rid of in the next year or so. I'd like to get it down to about 40 or 35. But that's hard.
A little while ago I sold off 25 bottles. It felt great. But since then I've easily purchased 10 or more. Now I'm moving right back to where I started. And with the exception of maybe 5 fragrances, I really like everything in my collection--but whether or not they get enough use is another story.
Take Ambre Precieux for example--I love it. It's beautiful. But I can barely find the occasion to wear it. And it's kind of depressing seeing it sit there on the shelf, going to waste. At the same time, the idea of parting with it is hard to swallow.
However, for the past few weeks I've been basically rotating 4 scents, and it works well. It's easier to choose in the morning, I'm familiar with how they perform and know they'll work for me on that day, and it's a different feeling when you have a kind of signature scent. But what about the one day I want to wear Pear and Olive? Some time in the winter when I'm bored out of my mind and looking for some variation in my routine? Spraying from samples or decants doesn't satisfy me like spraying from the real bottle. And that's probably why I'm stuck hovering between 50 and 70--those odd days that pop up throughout the year and demand something completely different.
