Is there anything in the shopping by city subforum?

EDIT - you didn't really hint at the reason for your question, but here are some threads that mention SF's Barneys:

We may need to move this thread, but I'll await more input on that. But I'd love to start answering.

Yes - been to the NY Barney's. It's niche heaven. I remember checking out the selections of numerous niche houses, and loving it. Of course, a visit there also deserves visits to Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendel as well. They have amazing fragrance collections, too.

Edit - sorry - just saw that you're interested in the SF Barney's. I will definitely need to move this thread. Hang on.....

Go ahead and move it, I didn't see the city subforum thread.

I was going to ask if anyone who made purchases there if they were successful in getting a few samples. Whenever i made purchases there, I didn't get any despite requesting for a few in particular. This was the case for Frederic Malle purchases.

If I recall correctly, the New York store was not terribly forthcoming with samples, although I am not positive about that. I think I had my purchases shipped, and they had a gift, which I took with me. I know that one time, a friend got a Malle sample without a purchase, but he's a regular and was likely going to buy that same fragrance.

My impression is that there is a lot of browsing, and therefore they tend not to give out many samples unless there is a purchase, but even then, maybe not so many.

I know that Aedes will load down a shipped purchase with extra samples! Gotta love that.

The frederic malle specialist, who was a woman, refused to give me any carded samples or bother even making a sample. Her excuse was she was saving it for more qualified customers. Really?! I just made a purchase and you made a sale, that's pretty low and insulting. I wish I remember the name of this SA/frederic malle specialist.

Ewwwwwww. That's just wrong. Judging customers can be extremely dangerous. I know that when unchaperoned kids come around mooching samples, there is a tendency to balk, but even there, treating people nicely pays off. I recall watching some kids come by and get treated well. Not much later, dad showed up and joined them at the counter, and ended up making some purchases.

Sounds like New York is the place. I will also say this - the Vegas Barney's treated the BN meetup faction to a royal morning in their private showing area. Not counting wonderful breakfast items and coffee before we started. CANNOT say enough good things about them.

These kinds of things only happen at Barney's. Neimans and Saks are happy la la land with happy people regardless of purchase or no purchase.

Would you know if other Barney's be willing to send out samples if called their store? I would rather not spend money getting small samples online, since that money could be spent on acquiring a larger decant or two of a scent that I really like. If I go through those decants, I will be comfortable in purchasing a large expensive bottle. This is true especially for Frederic Malle frags.

That has not been my experience at the SF Barney's. I have visited twice and spent 10-20 minutes talking and smelling fragrances with the SA's. I left with samples from L'artisan the first time and Lutens the second time. I found the SA's very accommodating and nice people.
The same is true for Saks and Neiman's. Not every SA is going to be helpful and some may feel they need to guard those little samples but most realize that samples actually convince people to buy.
Next time you go to Barney's, talk to the L'artisan specialist, I think her name is Hillary. Very helpful and kind.

In the last several years that I've went to Barneys they never have carded samples of L'artisan or Serge Lutens to give out. I prefer Frederic Malle way more than those other two lines. Several SA have mentioned that decant containers cost of them a great deal of money, and they claim it should only be given out to paying customers. Some of the SAs there aren't friendly at all to their customers.

Oh I am sorry your experience at Barney's in SF was disappointing. I have been to the Barney's in San Fran and Ifound the SAs ( the men and women ) lovely indeed - they will chat for a long time ,are knowledgeable and not pushy at all. They will ship to you directly as well .

I would be tempted to inform her that in the future I would be buying from more qualified salespeople.

The friendliest Barneys salespeople I've met were in Boston. NYC was a mixed bag depending on the counter.
