The second thing that struck me was all these people using what looked to be ski sticks - up and down streets. At first I wondered if Europeans had a major stability problem, as that seemed to be the only purpose those sticks served. Then I found out that they were involved in the latest craze of Nordic walking, which supposedly uses up nearly as many calories as jogging. I am extremely skeptical of this claim. When I and others jog, I see lots of sweat. I have yet to see one of these tourists sweating while using the sticks. Even more curiously, when going up steep paths and stairs (as at Corniglia in Cinque Terre the other day), I saw many of the people with the sticks, just tucking them under their arms and walking up the paths without using them. Seemed like pretty useless things to be carrying around to me.
Also, I was in Portofino yesterday, and not a bottle of Aqua di Portofino was to be found there - which seemed kind of odd to me.
