To celebrate the festivities Basenotes is having another get together. 29 October 2009 Avon have reported their third-quarter 2009 total revenue of $2.6 billion, 4% lower than that of 2008's third quarter, but up 7% on a local-currency basis as foreign exchange pressured growth by 11 percentage points. Beauty sales in the third quarter of 2009 were 3% lower versus the prior-year period, but increased 8% on a local-currency basis. Active Representatives grew 10%, with growth in all regions. In a wood panelled room above Liberty in the heart of London, Francis Kurkdjian leans forward excitedly and reaches for one of the pristine white boxes that are spread out on the table in front of him. This is the man who created one of the most prolific fragrances of the 90’s: Le Male, at the age of 25, and who has since been the créateur parfumeur behind a succession of internationally renowned fragrances for the likes of Dior, Elizabeth Arden, Guerlain and Armani.  "If I pay for jasmine absolute, I should get jasmine absolute", said Mark in one of our early meetings. He had gathered a small group of us to discuss the never-ending problem of essential oil adulteration. ”And the same goes for any oil we buy,” he continued, “we want the best quality. Let us do our own perfumery. Don’t dilute the stuff for us.”
It doesn't help that Mark's demands exceed the generally accepted standard that he has a tendency to be paranoid.
"We know that the majority of the oils out there are adulterated, but we really want to make it clear to the suppliers: give us the real thing and we're prepared to pay for it. But if you lie to us, we'll name and shame you." At this point our essential oil buyer cut in: "We already have them sign a declaration. Naming and shaming might mean that we could be left with no suppliers." [ more...] |

 For any perfume lover, the Farina Haus at Obenmarspforten 21 in Cologne, Germany is something of a shrine – the birthplace of Eau de Cologne, a revolution in perfumery, and the seat unto this day of the world’ oldest fragrance house, Johann Maria Farina gegenuber dem Julichsplatz, founded in 1709. Formerly also the site of its production, it now houses a spacious store, as well as a museum which features an impressive array of historical artefacts and documents. After a guided tour by “Johann Maria Farina” (1685-1766), garbed in resplendent Rococo attire, I was led through an inconspicuous door to the office of the present-day Johann Maria Farina, managing director and direct 8th generation descendant of his namesake.
