Michael Edwards' launches Fragrances of the World 2003
by Basenotes, 01 December 2002

Fragrances of the World 2003 (refered to from now on as FotW03) lists 3,240 fragrances. Each fragrance is listed with details of the year of launch, the fragrance house and the fragrance family. At a glance you can see which scents are similar to the fragrance you have chosen.
This is invaluable in a retail environment. If a customer requests a fragrance that you do not stock, without this book you will lose the sale. With FotW03, you can suggest a similar fragrance and a sale can be made. Do this 3-4 times and the book will have paid for itself.
Each of the major prestige houses are included (Chanel, Estee Lauder, Givenchy, Guerlain et al) as well as the international mass-market brands, including Coty, Dana, Maurer & Wirtz and Muelhens; also included are niche houses such as Creed, Demeter, Diptyque, Etro, Frederick Malle etc.
As well as a guide for retailers this is invaluable for collectors and anyone with an interest in perfume. Hours can be lost looking through it. At Basenotes, I keep a copy of the book by my computer at all times. I'm at a loss without it.
For those of you with previous editions of the book, you may be interested in what's new in FotW03. Firstly, the tabs are back so you can quickly find the relevant section. These last appeared in the 1999 edition, but due to the difficulties in locating a printer that could handle this specialist printing requirement, they were absent from the 2000-2002 editions. 520 new fragrances are added to the 2003 edition, as well as the introduction of the fragrances from (amongst others) Avon and Yves Rocher.
Put simply, it covers the world of fragrances from A*Men to Z-14.![]()
