Parlux launch Maria Sharapova fragrance
by Grant Osborne, 24 August 2005

Parlux Fragrances announced today the launch of Maria Sharapova’s fragrance, which will initially be a soft launch exclusive to seven Macy’s East doors in and around the New York City area.
"I’m very excited about this new opportunity," Sharapova said. “I’ve worked with Parlux on developing the fragrance since the beginning and it’s been a really fun, creative experience.”
Parlux Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ilia Lekach, said, “It is a great omen that Maria’s fragrance launch coincides with her achieving the number one world ranking in women’s tennis. Our current strategy calls for a soft launch domestically, major launches in Japan and Mexico, followed by launches in selective U.S. and international distribution."
Sharapova was born in Russia and moved to the U.S. at the age of seven. Shebegan her career on the junior circuit at age 14. In the 2001 season, Sharapova won 25 out of 28 matches and beat her own record by winning 26 of 29 matches the following year. In 2003, Sharapova entered the WTA professional women's circuit and in her first season won two professional titles: Quebec City and the Japan Open. By the end of the year she was ranked the 32nd best player in the world. Now ranked number one, Sharapova won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2004. In 2005, she has captured three titles.
Sharapova joins a long list of tennis players who have dabbled in the fragrance world. These include Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Bjorn Borg and Chris Evert.![]()
