Thank you! Yes, I had a grownup birthday with the Boyfriend (so happy for the turn my life has taken - funny to be happy about what is bad but it got us here, and really everything has gotten so much better. We are moving glacially slowly since so many kids involved, and it is growing nicely) and then came home and the oldest daughter had made an angel food cake, because there was no butter in the house and she wanted to make me a birthday cake. Also Daughter #2 sent me bread she made in the college dorm, no small feat because the oven turns off every 15-20 minutes so to make bread or cake the student has to stand there and swipe their card over and over to keep it on. She has been making cheese and yogurt too, and put the whey from the yogurt in the bread, yum. Good gifts. The little kids had grown me a loofah

So homemade gifts and grownup time. Really lovely.

in Polish university system we've got a numerical grading system. Grades vary from 2 to 5. If you get "2" you fail. "3" is the lowest passing score at exams, "4" is like "good" and "5" is "very good"
  8. Just keeping track of my post count as BN seems to be losing posts: 9685 as of now.

Sampling Groups Part 2: How to Pack Samples to Avoid Mishaps

by 30 Roses on 2nd June 2011 at 09:56 PM
Basically there are two things to prevent: leaks and breakage.

Leak prevention:

1. Leave a bit of head space when decanting!
Liquids expand in the lower atmospheric pressure of the airplane hold, so don't fill the vial or atomizer completely, or the perfume will be forced out when it expands.

2. Tape the caps on afterward.
The idea is to keep the cap in place so the sprayer doesn't discharge by accident. Bandage tape leaves

How to Start a Sampling Group for Perfumes

by 30 Roses on 31st May 2011 at 07:28 PM
In our desire to experience more perfumes without going broke in the process, many of us eventually buy or swap samples. But the cost of buying also adds up fast, and swapping requires that you have something the other person wants! Additionally, not everyone lives where they can test the fragrances at a store counter.

There is another alternative, and that is a sampling group, which has these advantages:

1. Each member only spends a little money to mail the package

Another Day to Walk and Sniff in NYC

by 30 Roses on 2nd May 2011 at 01:56 PM
Saturday, April 30th was a "perfect storm"-- glorious weather, the 2011 Guerlain Muguet released, and the Sniffapalooza event, with vendors prepared. We did not join the Sniffa group but did our own thing.

My husband, teenaged daughter and I took an early train into NYC Saturday with an itinerary in hand that enabled us to visit a number of stores on foot before they closed at 6 or 7 p.m.

We started at Saks. I made a beeline for Guerlain, eager to test

NYC: A Visit to Aedes de Venustas, Bigelow and Enfleurage

by 30 Roses on 21st August 2010 at 09:12 AM
We had a nice trip to NYC yesterday; my daughter wanted to see Madame Tussaud's (Wax Museum). The museum is very relaxed-- visitors are allowed to touch, and pose for photos with, the life size figures. This is worth bringing children to. (Who knew that Napolean was so short?)

From there we took the subway to 4th St. and walked a couple of blocks to Aedes de Venustas at 9 Christopher Street, which is conveniently open until 8. We had visited Aedes a year ago and had a good idea

A Day of Sniffing in Boston

by 30 Roses on 1st August 2010 at 03:45 PM
Yesterday my daughter wanted to explore the Harvard campus, so off we went. It's my husband's vacation and the weather was perfect-- breezy and low humidity.

Since we were in Cambridge anyway, we stopped in at Colonial Drug. This is not a pharmacy, but rather a shop specializing in hard to find and European brands of perfumes, toiletries, and high quality brushes and combs. They have testers. They do not take credit cards but they do invoice and ship. (See their website for
