La fougère est morte, vive la fougère

by Wild Gardener on 4th October 2019 at 01:54 PM
Fougère Royale was of course the original fougère. It was not only the first example of the genre but also one of the first fantasy perfumes - abstract creations that don't draw their inspiration from nature.

Paul Parquet's great and novel idea was to create a perfume structure based on the contrasts and harmonies of three different materials : the fresh aromatic smell of lavender, the sweet and powdery hay-like odour of coumarin and the resinous dark orange of bergamot.

Un pays de sauvages

by Wild Gardener on 13th August 2019 at 03:45 PM
Taking to the air, we scent the gardens of Sicily ... cedrat and mandarin,
and wild flowers that strew the rocky slopes.

And then, in a wing beat, we're over the high peaks and into the mountains
where wild grown lavender and herbs are found,
and we breathe in the rough bark moss

Not exactly Egghead Weds Hourglass but not far from it; Peaches and Cream Floral meets Cumin Leather Chypre. The contrast is extreme, the balance precarious and perfect. This was only the third perfume by Roudnitska and already a first masterpiece.

Roudnitska wasn't content with turning out mere pretty perfume, he liked to use odd themes in his work, and in Femme the stone he threw into the pool was cumin.

Femme is a lactonic, pink fruity floral with a dark bitter

Notes from the Osmothèque : Speed dating Roudnitska

by Wild Gardener on 14th June 2019 at 06:38 PM
Going to an Osmothèque conference is like speed dating an oeuvre, you get a few minutes with a smelling strip before the next one comes along and the flow can go on for an hour or more. You can only get the most general idea of a perfume at the time, but at the end of the evening the smelling strips are all lined up in their paper sleeves ready to take away and work on later. The perfumes are all reconstructions, and as the Osmothèque doesn't give out vials it's impossible to try them on skin. A

Notes from the Osmothèque : Jean Carles, the Man and his Method

by Wild Gardener on 18th April 2019 at 02:03 PM
Jean Carles is popularly remembered as the Beethoven of Perfume, famously composing Ma Griffe using only his olfactive memory after he had lost his sense of smell. But there was more to this gifted perfumer than the tragedy that overtook him in later life. He was an amateur musician, a talented linguist who spoke six languages, a lover of Great Gatsby style cars and a conjuror who owned more than 120 books on stage magic.

Behind the showman there was of course a more serious side.
