I'm (relatively) new to fragrance -- after a 2-year obsession ten years ago, followed by a decade of wearing the same perfume without really thinking about it, I woke up one day and realised I didn't love the scent the same way I used to. Also, I don't want to wear the same perfume all day every day for the rest of my life.
I *used* to gravitate to two types of scents: (1) big stompy unsubtle incense/musk/spices/vanilla giants; and (2) icy pine/grapefruit/white floral mixtures that smell like anyone who touches you is about to lose a finger. I'm still figuring out what I like right now. I don't have a very sensitive nose so figuring out what I'm actually smelling is very much a work in progress.
Things I know I like: incense; amber; big roses; beeswax; pine or fir; darker vanilla; jasmine in moderation.
Things I don't like: foody or sugary fragrances; big juicy fruit notes; "fresh" or "green" scents (invariably turn sickly and rotting on my skin); "clean" scents and light musks; strong citrus notes.
