Are these 80s masterpieces to be found in a modern scent?

by dreese on 11th September 2016 at 05:51 PM
There are a plethora of 80s fragrances, long discontinued, that I wold love to find again. My hope is that the basenotes alumni will know modern fragrances that may closely resemble some of these cherished scents of my youth. If you have any experience with modern smell-alikes, I would be forever indebted to you.

More Affordable versions of upmarket fragrances

by dreese on 4th January 2015 at 03:59 PM
Over the past 3-4 years, my project of sampling the world of cheap colognes for quality has resulted in finding several that are nearly identical to popular and more expensive fragrances. I thought I might share some of these findings with the BN community:
Yacht Man Metal is identical to Chanel Allure Homme Sport
Thallium Sport is identical to Happy by Clinique
AB Spirit Millionaire is very similar to Azzaro 1 Million (no surprise there)
Lomani is very similar to Drakkar

the Heartbreak of Discontinued Fragrances

by dreese on 15th September 2014 at 01:05 PM
It must be admitted that a large portion of my fragrance hobby is an attempt to find scents that are attached to the most powerful moments and moods of my youth. I found this Andy Warhol comment on Scentbird's website regarding the experience of perfume:

"I switch perfumes all the time. If I've been wearing one perfume for three months, I force myself to give it up, even if I still feel like wearing it, so whenever I smell it again it will always remind me of those three months.

Yacht Man Metal

by dreese on 30th April 2014 at 07:38 PM
In my Yacht Man reviews, Metal is up next, This is a very brave and potent woody citrus. Initially, it reminded me of the original formulation (1980s) of Chanel's Antaeus, but now I realize that it is almost identical to Allure Sport Homme. This may have been intended since they both arrive in metal flasks. The white musk is sweet and warm and it stays beneath a well-rounded, hearty center of citrus, cedar, and pepper, with a finish of a soft aquatic layer softly placed across the top of the whole

Yacht Man Black

by dreese on 19th March 2014 at 11:56 AM
Updating my Yacht Man reviews, Black is up next.
This wins the all-time award for the shortest duration and lowest projction of anything I have ever dealt with. I'm not exaggerating when I say that it begins disappearing between the bottle and your skin. In order to achieve any type of lasting scent, I had to apply 4x the amount of a regular fragrance. Even then, the best duration I could accomplish was around 20-30 minutes.
The scent itself is very pleasant; a soft mix of lily, iris,
