Christine Nagel creates Encre Noire Pour Elle

by Danielle Cooper, 17th July, 2009

Basenotes readers have spent years wearing fragrances because they love them and not because the marketing campaign defines them as masculine or feminine.  Well now it seems that you have been rumbled!

Realising that women across the world have been claiming Encre Noire for their own, luxury house Lalique has used the vetiver based fragrance as the starting point for new feminine offering, Encre Noire Pour Elle.

Christine Nagel
, the perfumer who created 2008's Lalique White and Narciso Rodriguez for Her in 2003, is the nose behind the new fragrance and was inspired by the unusual opportunity to create a vetiver women's fragrance.  As she exclaimed to Basenotes "why should rose be for females and vetiver for males?  Who decided this?"

Lalique do not advertise so without these constraints on the budget Christine found that she could choose her ingredients from a wide range of luxurious materials.  The scent travels the world in an olfactive search for such ingredients, beginning with Sicilian bergamot, grains of Indonesian amber and freesia.  Turkish rose, osmanthus and kephali gather at the heart, leading into a base of Haitian vetiver, Texan cedar and musks.

The story of a Lalique scent would not be complete without paying special attention to the amazing glassware for which the house has become known and Encre Noire Pour Elle is no exception.  The square inkwell inspired glass flacon is opulently inscribed with the name of the fragrance in glistening gold against the high gloss black glass.  For those amongst us with a penchant for Lalique collectable flacons - and £600 to spare - there is also a limited edition crystal cube which echoes the gold calligraphy of it's counterpart, but the wider square of the bottle is opposed by the round crystal glass stopper - also inscribed with gold stamping.  If you are interested be quick, there are just 99 numbered bottles which each contain 60ml/2 floz of concentrated perfume extract as opposed to eau de parfum - the perfume extract will not be available for purchase again following the sale of all 99 bottles.

The eau de parfum is available in 50ml/1.7floz and 100ml/3.3floz and all can be complimented with a 200ml/6.6floz perfumed body cream.  Encre Noire Pour Elle will be available in September 2009.
