Black Musk by Montale, 2010

Pros: Incredible complex scent

Cons: Longevity not quite up to Montale standards

I am a fan of Montales, having Black Aoud, Dark Aoud, Cuir d'Arabie, Louban, and Red Aoud.  This is a variation on the Black Aoud fragrance, minus the blast of oud, being replaced by a blast of refined Musk.  There is leather also, and I like the analogy that this is a Mafia fragrance.  Not overly "masculine" but more "dangerous"  The only problem I see is that it does not quite last all day like Black/Dark Aoud does..2 or 3 spritzes will give you maybe 6 hrs.

Just a sombre, inky, more than vaguely irony, averagely dense, musky oudh (far more musk than aoud, the not listed woody resin, i suppose, is anyway introduced, despite it happens just in a minimal dosage) with a masculine peppery and woody dry down. The woodiness is so understated in comparison with some "infamous" Montale but here the smell is anyway deep and rich. Really a musky concoction. The still present note of sandalwood is not so stark and arid as in the petroleous, woodier and darker Dark Aoud. The starring musk is increased in density, animalism, virility and mystery by hints of amber and leather and is utterly shadowed by some greens, roots and spices. The smell exudes the moderate mildness coming from the opacity. A gloomy, botanic, metropolitain and enigmatic olfactory shout coming straight from the suburbia.

A very interesting take on leather-musk and it has the wow factor really. It has the classic Montale start but the rose is very backstage and ceases to exist in some minutes. What stays is a very dark and challenging leather note. This is quite a difficult fragrance to wear, but much much better and different from the rest of the vast numbers of Montales.

Like many Montale fragrances Black Musk is a challenging wear for some. It opens up with an explosion of the medicinal Montale oud house note however this didn't last too long on me before I found myself sniffing my shirt over and over to try and identify what was going on. Black Musk is complex and is not as linear as some other Montale fragrances. I agree with comments about it being dark and futuristic. To me it had a sharpness to it with almost metallic/inky qualities. This has huge longevity and after the initial burst of fragrance I find it stays quite close to the skin however still projects enough to have people notice how great you smell. In a sea full of aquatics and department store "woods" you'd stand head and shoulders above the rest.

This fragrance is dark, leathery, woody and spicy from pepper. I thought at first I was really loving this one but today I feel different. This scent is so dry, it almost borders on reaching this powdery state. I think this is coming fromt he musk used in this. This frag does bear a resemblance to Black Aoud. Now when it comes to oud oils, I have sampled many. Some of them smell more like leather than oud. I have no idea what's really going on these frags (black musk and black oud) besides what the house tell us. For all I know There are using an oud that comes off as leather and woody at the same time. I do know that this frag comes off as more leathery than black oud. Black aoud is more on the woody side.

If you liked the smell of Fahrenheit but found it TOO much like petrol/rubber, you will enjoy this. The leather and nutmeg combo is toned down quite significantly when compared to Dior's effort, and although it still gives that 'Super Ball dipped in gasoline' accord that Fahrenheit possesses, I find it much easier to wear. As with most of the Montales, it lasts for ages (one spray on your bare chest, and it will linger on your shirt until you wash it) and projects like a beast. People will definitely notice you, and it takes confidence to wear this. I'll concur with alfarom and give it a 7/10, I'd love to hear what a Fahrenheit fan thinks of Black Musk.

Musky and musty... not sweet and not as powerful as other Montales. This can be used all seasons. Remembers more Musk to Musk than Black Aoud. Its similarities with Black Aoud ceases in the first 30 minutes.

Black Musk is lunar and dark. An enigmatic futuristic fragrance despite being an Oriental. For me its a dark , camphorous, cooling yet silver spicy fragrance. The sillage is insane and the longevity is about 10-12 hours on me. Wearing this I feel transported the futuristic world of TRON , clean, pristine, metallic. A winner from the house of Montale!

I know that this fragrance is viewed as that result of crossing two other Montale scents, but I see it as an exercise in abstraction. A sharp, whistling musk, like the one in Thierry Mugler's Cologne is the perfect match to a woody quality that makes for a sort of leather scent-mirage. The wood seems like patchouli plus oud, inflected with something in the mace/nutmeg/cardamom range. Black Musk's cleverness is in creating a tarry quality with patchouli, spice and just a taste of oud, then dry-cleaning it with a prickly musk that someone along the way surely told the perfumer was the wrong musk. No pillowy soft or bosomed musk. The result is a cool, inky leather scent that focuses more on the sharp nature of tanning chemicals than the hide itself. I'll take this chance to own up to a bit of fumie apostasy. I don't particularly like oud, and since its usually the overwhelming center of perfumes that contain it, most oud perfumes dont capture me. Likely this quirk has saved me a pile of money on niche perfumery and the laughingly late-to-the party top-shelf lines from the designer/perfume houses. This implicitly self-defeating strategy of the perfume houses launching exclusive lines in order to appear niche-y has produced an inordinate number of oud fragrances. (To witness niche, copying designer, copying niche, please see the Kilian Ouds.) Very few use oud as a minor part of an accord, one where you might not even recognize oud, such as Black Musks delicious vinyl/leather accord. Shame, yeah?

The musk here is basically the same as in Dark Aoud minus the oud and the saffron. Dark, deep, rich, intense and completely satisfying. Leather and musk with a remarkable synthetic-woody vibe. By any means Montale-ish!
