I happened to stumble randomly across this fragrance in my local department store. While it has indeed been discontinued, this particular store is still selling it. This fragrance, that I luckily had the opportunity to test, is quite amazing and unique. Perhaps it is its unique nature that caused this fragrance a lack of sales. By for Men is a combination of herbaceousness, pepper and nuts. The scent itself is rather bold, a big commander of presence. I found this perfume to be both sexy and soothing, particularly with the lavender note. In all honesty, I wore this fragrance on two occasions, and I concluded that this fragrance could be unisex. The tobacco and sandalwood in the drydown, ends By for Men with a deliciously rich smokiness which I really enjoyed. Every time I think of this fragrance's beauty it makes me quite angry to think that in the near future, this fragrance will be a distant memory. The longevity was very good and the sillage quite strong. The bottle design was also a hit with me. It's such a shame that Dolce & Gabbana didn't think this fragrance was worthy of remaining in their collection for the long-term. By for Men is refreshingly modern, and I feel that it deserves more praise than more recent releases like The One for Men and the Anthology series. NB. This review was written in late 2010. I believe this fragrance is no longer in stock at that particular store.

GREAT FRAGRANCE!!! a little too femenine at times but a fragrance that will bring compliments from the ladies,,once it hits the dry down it starts smelling more masculine like leather an woody a very unique smell BUT still will have to go with armani code in wish it smells in some way símilar but it gets compliments in higher ways...

When I want warm, comforting, sexy assuredness I reach for D&G BY. The sad thing is I never smelled this until 2002 because I was so put off by the chintzy bottle design. I had a friend rave about this and I destinctly remember laughing him off close-mindedly as he flashed me his bottle proclaiming it was "the stuff". I had never smelled it on him. Much later, at first smell I was hooked. I can only imagine that the gauche packaging helped attribute to its discontinuation. It looked like a bargin bin crap offering by appearance but oh how I was wrong. Can't judge a book by its cover - It was a hard lesson to learn. Now I am paying top dollar to amass backups for 1.7oz sizes to avoid getting scammed by fakes. I deserve it I guess. La Nuite de L'Homme by YSL is somewhat similiar to BY but weaker and sweeter than this powerful masterpiece. I can only pray for D&G to rerelease it.

This is my "Holy Grail" as well as my signature. I love everything about this fragrance EXCEPT the fact that it is so expensive since being discontinued and the majority of the ones on the online market are fakes so beware. This is one of the few scents I close my eyes to while taking a slow sniff and exhale a whispered "ahhhhhhh". Beastly longevity and silage I give this unique scent a 10/10.

Not your usual opening: pepper and a green nutmeg given a weird sort of buzz by hediones pretending to be jasmine and yet its an enjoyable accord. Coming off the top notes to the heart notes, the lavender rather than the artemisia dominates the middle of the fragrance, which I find unfortunate. I was looking forward to the aromatic woodiness of artemisia and hoping it would overwhelm the lavender there it didnt. No wormwood, just lavender. I am forced to dismiss the middle accord. The base comes across weakly to me. I pick up leather and amber, and I might like it if I could smell it better I cant tell if the weakness is my problem or the fragances. I dont get enough wood in the base to be sure that its there. In spite of my description, I think I will give this fragrance a bit of a break Its a skin scent that doesnt happen to do anything for me, but I can recognize that it performs its skin-scent attributes quite well.

I once received a sample that just said "BY D&G" on it and always assumed it was the woman's scent they'd given me. So I bought a little bottle of the women's version and was disappointed. It just wasn't as lovely-soft-musky as the sample I had. The women's version has this top-note of spice that is off-putting, chemically and irritating. The dry-down is nicer, but it just wasn't what I thought it'd be. I assumed that the bottle I'd bought had gone over or something!

WELL, recently I saw a little bottle of BY for men at the perfume shop I frequent so I bought it. In the car, I popped the top open and was very excited and pleased to find that old, sample scent I loved. So this whole time, it was the MEN'S version I loved! No wonder.

This scent is definitely unisex. Though the musk gets a little barber-shoppy, it's sweet enough and soft enough for a woman.

BY Man is proof positive that designers can put out top-notch fragrances. Unfortunately it's also proof positive that unless a fragrance sells well, the quality is meaningless and it will be discontinued, it's fans relegated to praying the bottle they just spend $150 on eBay isn't a fake (as many are).

BY is a combo of spicy oriental with some fougere elements as well. There's lavender in there, but it's overlaid with sandalwood and amber with a blend of spices. The drydown isn't a traditional 'leather', but rather it's very 'leathery' in its texture. Sillage and longevity are superb. Whenever I wear BY I'm struck with how out of place it is amongst designer fragrances from the same time period. It's a shame that D&G's gamble didn't pay off.

The most economical way to sample BY is to purchase a mini. If you decide to go for a bottle be careful because even reputable sellers are being sold fakes. Remember, you get what you pay for and if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is!

Now this here is a nice lavender type scent but it is a little on the musky side. To me, I smell musk, tea and lavender. Not a bad combo. The scent carries nicely and last for the whole day. Glad I have this one.
