Pros: A lovely old chypre - warm and sensual

Cons: Reformulation by Dana to be avoided

Since there is no fragrance directory page for the original Houbigant Chantilly, I am writing this for the Dana reformulation page to inform potential purchasers of this scent.

It is to your benefit to avoid the cheap Dana reformulation and purchase the vintage Houbigant on Ebay. This is a warm, fragrant, dark chypre of the old school type - just wonderful for those of us who love this type of scent.

If you are a fan of Shocking, Replique, Plaisir, etc, you will love the vintage Chantilly.

a very lingering, lovely scent. I only apply a little at a time due to its enveloping nature, but the current version is one of my faves and the older version was my gran's fave.

Review of vintage Houbigant version. I truly hate this. It makes me feel really nauseous, too sweet, too heavy, too cloying.

I wish there was a rating between thumbs up & neutral for my mini of the old Chantilly....I do like it, but the heady combination of floral, ORANGE! & spice & leather make it more than I would wear in public on most occasions. I used to dress up in "Pointer Sisters" full Glam & it certainly would have been lovely for that... The (possibly) tarragon & lemon highlights of Quelques Fleurs work better for me nowadays. I am glad I have the pleasure of a dab from this mini occasionally. I wouldn't wear the modern Chantilly at all (even though I once owned a giant vat of it by accident) unless I was in a mosquito infested jungle & it repelled mosquitos (like citronella). This theory has not been tested. I'm going to cheat here & put in a major plug for BISTRO which I don't find on the list. It is an inexpensive EDT that is difficult to find & connected with "Chantilly" & "Dana" & Parfums Parquet". It is light years away from the offensive qualities of the mass produced modern Chantilly, however. It is uniquely fresh, herbal..with a hint of carnation...something that suggests the artemesia family of herbs or vermouth...brisker than the hint of tarragon in Quelques Fleurs, with no cloying quality at all, like a bouquet in spring rain. All this in an inexpensive EDT in a 50's suggestive powder pink bottle with black lid....

I have a tiny amount of a very vintage Chantilly by Houbigant. It is so lovely I did the "gasp" in the middle of a dusty antique store when I first held it to my nose. I treasure that little three-quarters of an inch of juice. It is divine, oriental, mysterious without being cloudy, with a deep rose hiding in there. And the bottle is lovely. One of my recent treasures. I will mourn the last of this.

Slightly misleading categorisation up top there. The 1941 version is Houbigant, not Dana. I own the vintage version... ...which is just gorgeous. I wasn't expecting anything so marvellous. Houbigant, when I was a kid, made those mid range scents that your mum might get at Christmas if you didn't have much money. (None of my family even knew what Chanel No 5 smelled like, let alone wore it. I'm a little bit intimidated by those people who say that Caron scents remind them of their grandmothers. My grandmother probably did their cleaning.) Anyway I thought it would be a harsh floral without a lot of character. It turns out to be one of the loveliest things I've ever smelled. Imagine being wrapped in a thick, cashmere blanket with swirls of rose, rasberry and cream. Add an impression of tinned pears (top treat when I was a kid) and handmade vanilla ice cream. All this with high heels and a small, sophisticated hat and beautifully applied lipstick. Is what it does for me.

The thumbs up is for the vintage Houbigant version. I never expected to like it as much as I do, I like chypres, and quite ''heavy'' fragrances. I had expected the vintage Houbigant to be a pretty unremarkable old fashioned powdery scent. And it is very powdery, but with a subtle spicy very sexy twist. I don't feel at all innocent and old fashioned in this, I feel very sexy and luscious! I wear this in the daytime, it makes me feel chique, and I love dusting myself after a bath with the vintage powder I've got, and spraying some on my pulse points, I love sleeping in it! I feel as if I am in a soft pinky perfumy cloud. Did I mention it's totally sexy? I have a large splash bottle, and a spray mist, and waw! that spray mist is so beautiful! None of my expensive high end fragrances has a such a superb quality spray nozzle. About the Dana version, which I tried in a department store in the hope of having an easy supply, the least said the better. What a crying shame!

This scent is all about a very beautiful powdery rose who will transport you back in time...think about Barbara Cartland dressed up in pink with her cats and full make up... I certainly love it and would recommend it to anyone who feels like travelling back in time now and again... Incredibly strong and long lasting... Big thumbs up...!!!

Chantilly is a warm and beautiful oriental amber with a soft and abstract spicy floral base (rose, jasmine, carnation). It's a style without drama or sharp edges... and I am sure that the popularity of this style of perfumery will one day be restored to its rightful place in the pantheon of scent!

Whenever I smell Chantilly I suspect that Houbigant was taking pointers from Emeraude, Shalimar and No. 5. These fragrances really have a lot more in common with each other than with most floral, fresh, or fruity fragrances released at that time... or now, of course.

As is true with many fragrances, both vintage and modern, it seems the older and 'stronger' versions of Chantilly are really the one most worth tracking down.

The eau de parfum versions by Houbigant are awesome if you can find them, and many of the older eau de toilette by Houbigant and 'New Dana' are deep and delightful. Sadly, the Dana products are not as complex as the older parfum or EdT. But like a grainy photograph, they still give you some idea of the 'real thing'.

As the years go by, Chantilly remains one of my greatest favorites. Wouldn't it be something if the original formula was recreated? I won't hold my breath, but I can still hope... Big thumbs up!

I just purchased two of the huge vintage Houbigant Chantilly EDTs on eBay. I then found the vintage powder with a small amount of lotion. I decided to buy some Dana Lotion as well to go with my vintage. As you have probably noticed, I am very fond of this lovely spicy oriental. It does not make me feel old or pudish. There is nothing Victorian about this scent. It makes me feel young and frisky.

It is the first perfume I remember wearing. As I was in the bath literally anoiting myself with Chantilly, I felt like I was getting ready to go to the scating rink with my best friend Judy. Scents have the amazing power to transport us back in time. They are our own time machine or, in this case, Ghost of Fragrence Past. I don't need the help of Jules Verne or Charles Dickens because Chantilly does it for me.

Also, who of us from a certain generation can forget Jerry Lee Lewis and the wonderful lyrics "Chantilly Lace had a pretty face...". It is just a big part of a more innocent time in America.
