Pros: Great scent that sells for peanuts. One of the best values in the market

Cons: Can't think on any

This is a classic scent that will be enjoyed for many, many years.

A typical powerhouse, may not be liked by wimps.  It is an ubermacho scent built in the classic chypre structure, that is, a citric opening, patchouli heart and oakmoss base.

What makes this perfume different are the modifier notes, the cinnamon and cypress notes impart an unusual accord that is very unique,  The leather, even a common modifier for chypre type perfumes is very well done.  The jasmine and gardenia in the heart gives a nice floral contrast to the dry, dirty patchouli, and the benzoin/tonka accord complements the oakmoss base very nicely.  This is a very complex perfume and there are even more modifiers than I mention, however as complex as it is, it is very well balanced and shows quality galore,

Now, the cherry on the top is that this fragrance can be found at discount stores for less than you'll pay for a supersized MacDonald's combo.  Indubitably one of the best values in the market.

I like Halston 1-12 a little better than Z-14, and both Halston twins are  winners in my book.

Warning: Do not try if you are a rookie in the perfume experience, you like aquatics or you are a wimp.

Apparently the newest formulation is quite different. I've only tried an older one. Basically, there are clear citrus, herb, wood/vetiver, and lavender notes for a long time. Amber softens it up a bit over time. The leather is mild here, so I don't think of it as a leather scent at all. The spice is mild as well, though some have claimed the newest formulation is quite spicy, but without much if any moss. I have trouble with this one because of the combination of cedar, amber, patchouli, and lavender, but it's not as pronounced here as it is in a scent like Heritage, so I can wear this once in a while. I can't say it's something I find all that special, though, and I'd rather wear several other scents that are at least somewhat similar instead (which is why this one gets worn very rarely). It's natural smelling, with excellent longevity, but it's just not something that appeals to me at this point to any major degree.

Just snagged a bottle of this at TJMaxx for $10. For the price I like it a lot, to me it smells like CdG Play with an added splash of Van Cleef Tsar. Synthetic oakmoss with cinnamon coated citrus, sounds a bit odd but it wears really nice.

The cinnamon note seems to be most noticeable on me. It's a nice fragrance- you can definitely tell this is a 70's scent. Fairly good sillage & projection.

Love the ergonomic bottle. It feels good in the hand. An odd little monkey of a scent- initially striking me as delightful combination of Brut and 7Up, drying down to a woody musky glow synonymous in my mind with the aforementioned Brut (but I'm new to critical thought about fragrance, so perhaps my vocabulary is simply limited). I completely agree with a previous commentor that the scent is dated (when I was little in the 80s, this is what grownup men smelled like), but not to it's detriment, it's simply put together differently than more recent calone/cooking herb love fests. More suede than black leather, lending itself in my mind to scotch, cigars, and conversation better than to sexy sweaty dancefloor, but then again, I've been 33 since I was 16. Super cheap, but doesn't necessarily smell like it. A fun addition to the repatoire.

You will either Love or Hate this Fragrance. I bought this very Cheap years ago and initially I never wore it due to having others that were similiar. However I am trying all my fragrances and I'm going to give a fair assessment to it. Z-14 goes well in winter as it has a kick that works with the Cold season. It starts off with a Lemon zest feel that quickly goes and then the Cinnamon takes over and seems to dominate for half an hour or so. The Leather and Moss finish it of with the Leather feel totally dominating the fragrance a it disapears into the mist. Sillage is patchy, Projection is average with me getting 4-5 Hours with this. Worth trying as a 5 m or 30ml Bottle. Not the worst smell out there, it has style at least and that why its worth a try.

Major thumbs up on vintage version of Z-14 from me. This is an excellent scent that belongs right beside the greats out of the mid 70s through the 80s. I get a very nice citrus and cinnamon opening, then the heart is a sublime herbal blend including basil and coriander (among others), mixing with jasmine, patchouli and more cinnamon (albeit a very subtle presentation of the cinnamon at this point), ending with a nice oak moss and leather base. Great stuff that is potent but quite smooth at the same time. I find Z-14 to have earned its superior reputation and it is an absolute classic. The other positive about vintage Z-14 is it is oh so inexpensive at about $20 for a large bottle... To me, this is blind buy worthy for sure (as long as you get vintage version that contains oak moss in its ingredients list on the box). I give this amazing smelling classic a strong 4 to 4.5 star rating out of 5.

Very nice citrus-forward blend; I seem to pick up more wood in it than do some of the other reviewers here. Got it for a pittance at a CW Price store, so it's a win almost no matter what, but I do find that in cologne strength it just disappears on my skin. At first, not having read carefully, I thought it was EDT and gave it my usual three shots--I was stunned when half an hour later I smelled literally nothing on my arm. Tripling the dose brought results (and I do like the results), but even then, for me, this stuff has VERY short legs.

I bought this on the recommendation of a friend, knowing that I liked leather, citrus, and wood scents, and in the hopes of getting me to look into lower cost classics instead of pursuing Tom Ford, Creed, etc, to save my wallet; especially as a semi-newbie to this whole fragrance-hoarding -thing. It's pleasant enough, you can definitely smell a quality to it that dates it, but not in a way that makes out outdated, it just marches to a different beat compared to today's colognes, though I'm never sure when it's appropriate to label something "classic". It does seem to dance slightly on the edge of "too mature for the under 40 crowd" to me but that might be partially due to childhood associations and not the scent itself...not sure. I can still wear it and get compliments as a 30-something, even if it reminds people of a long-ago family member from time to time. Such is the side effect of wearing a cologne introduced almost 40 years ago. My only complaint is that I don't smell much of the leather, or the patchouli, cedar, or amber for that matter. It fairly quickly dries down to a scent that I have heard others refer to as "the barbasol scent", it's not offensive or anything, it's a rather clean, somewhat generically manly smell that is only faintly projected, and it doesn't have a certain masculine "oomph" I associate with other colognes, especially leather ones. I also definitely smell the "coca cola" smell that another person commented on, though I hadn't known what to call it before. Wondering if this is yet another frag that got dumbed down a bit over the years, as I don't find this having nearly as forceful of a macho personality as others are saying. Either way, for the price it's definitely worth picking up, it's found for $20-25 in many places and is far better a choice than whatever frat-boy-du-jour cologne is on the shelves for the same price point. Well, in my opinion.

I'm embarrassed to admit I like it on ME, even though I'm a woman. Someone else wrote he or she liked to wear it to bed & I do too, rubbing a little on my ankles & feet seems to give me a lift. In addition to the citrus & moss qualities I particularly like the basil. Florida Water is not the same, no amber or jasmine, but bounces citrus off an herbal/spice wall in a direct way. I don't think I'd wear it in public...I don't want to be mistaken for somebody's dad.
Halston Z-14 by Halston, 1976
Description:

The international roll-out for Halston fragrances in 1976 was masterminded by Michael Edwards, who told Basenotes why Halston chose to launch with two male fragrances: "Halston couldn't make up his mind which one he preferred so he said, "Launch both". The names, Z-14 and 1-12? Those were the perfumer's code numbers." Basenotes visitor, Bryian Davis tells us "the bottles were inspired by the soft shapes fingers would make pinching the form, that's where the name 'pinch' bottle came from. "
