this is very masculine oud- woody scent, and one that transforms a lot with time it starts very lemony, zesty refreshing, so that you think there is no oud in here, after an hour or more.....the citrus freshenes is gone and what stays is a little bit of medicinal and little bit barny oud note....that reminds me the most of Cuir d Arabie, there is some sharpness overall that comes from spices ......but i smell no roses at all, there was a little hint after 30 minutes that rose will apear...but it ended up in spices! for lovers of nicely balanced spices, longevity is remarkable!! i give it thumbs up for originality and performance :)

An excellent Montale fragrance. Understated, bright clean opening of citrus and medicinal aoud, that quickly blossoms into an airy and very beautiful dusty rose and aoud combination that smells a lot like Band-Aids. I really enjoy it. Be careful when you spray it, the opening is deceptively quiet for a Montale. It takes about five minutes to develop, and when it does it is very powerful with strong silage and tremendous longevity. I get 12-15 hours with this one, and much much longer if it gets on my clothing. Two sprays are enough for most situations. The dry down is a beautiful soft, dusty rose and medicinal aoud. This one is the most medicinal smelling of any Montale fragrance that I have owned. It really does smell like Band Aids for the first two or three hours. The aoud dies down a bit after five or six hours and you are left with a gorgeous, soft rose. Comparisons to Montale's Taj are not well-founded. While both are powerful and have a strong Aoud presence, Taj is dark, heavy, and dirty, and smells of ground tobacco leaves and leather, while Royal Aoud is bright, happy, and clean and smells of bandaids and roses. I love them both. Unlike Taj, Royal Aoud is definitely unisex, and the rose is light and airy - not dark, heavy or dense like the rose in Black Aoud, for example. I'd say, within the Montale line of Aouds, Royal Aoud is the polar opposite of Black Aoud. Quiet, understated, and lovely opening. Light and bright. Soft, dusty rose dry down. As opposed to Black Aoud, which has a raw and forceful opening, deep and dark rose heart, and is deep and mysterious as it dries down. Both smell great. Both are sexy. Both project like crazy and last over a half a day. I highly recommend this one. If you don't like dusty rose or you don't like aoud, then this one isn't for you. But, if you are looking on a fresh, happy, clean take on an aoud and rose based fragrance, then this one is will be a very welcome addition to your wardrobe.

I obviously catch in the air some similarities with Aoud Lime and Black Aoud and i agree who with smells Royal Aoud as a sort of Aoud Lime (one of my absolute favourite of the line) without the initial strong citrusy blast (at least, with a fainter initial citrusy splash) although  i would also add that Royal Aoud lacks the notable Aoud Lime's lingering cool greeness and introduces a more developed woody and rosey powdery final sweetness. This  one is indeed basically a rosey and spicy oudh with a final touch of vanillic  luxurious smoothness and nothing else. The right balance among the main notes, i mean medicinal aoud and final softness, makes this fragrance slightly different since the beginning. I mean that the rustic and medicinal aoud effect is shorter in duration and softer in temperament while we can catch since the beginning a touch of velvety and dusty smoothness rising from the balsams. I agree who with detect in here a more complex and sophisticated temperament exuding from a less brash and brutal aoud's vibe. While analyzing its homonymous scent appointed by Creed (the Royal Oud, another one with a subdued medicinal harshness and a more developed creamy smoothness) i have to deduce  that the word "royal " in association with the note of audh means softer, less boisterous and more complex. The fair dosage of the note of oudh, i'm refering to a sort of civilized oudh by its combination with softening and more appealing edible notes, is enough to turn it out as a "royal" one since this woody resin, despite its fair dosage, owns itself inside the quality and facets to conjure however up exotic-royal ambiences and atmospheres. The dry down is warm, resinous and slightly honeyed. Obviously this is more wearable, may be more refined but to me less compelling than the heavyweights  from the Montale line, i mean Black Aoud, Dark Aoud, Aoud Lime, Steam Aoud and others. Its softness transmits the impression of a shorter lasting power but i suppose it's just an ostensible feeling.

This isn't the nose searing oud that I found in Black Oud, which is a big improvement. When oud is uncontrolled it just smells like band-aids, astringents, gauze, and various other goodies you'd find in a hospital. Somehow this has been softened to a degree that has it more resembling a brand new sneaker. The smell is still sterile, but it's classy and clean. It still gets annoying at around the tenth hour, but oud is a harsh smell no matter how you dilute it.

Kumquat? Grapefruit? I dont get no stinking citrus! I get aoud. Aoud in abundance. As usual with an aoud fragrance, I originally smelled that same electrical fire thing that was my first impression of Aoud Pur Oriental. This time it didnt bother me at all because I know it would take several wearings before my nose and brain adapts to my strangeness to an aoud note. Aoud, as with most strong woods used in scents, completely dominates and submerges the citrus elements (or any other element, for that matter) to my nose. As far as I am concerned, this is an almost pure aoud scent,Im not complaining, I love it this way, because aoud has become an addictive note for me: Im long past the stage where I think of it as insect repellant. As with several other aoud fragrances from Montale that I have tried, a rose note comes to the fore as the potency of the wood wanes. Its an excellent rose note, and its like the calm AFTER the storm. The aoud in Royal Aoud doesnt seem to last as long as in the other aoud fragrances Ive tried. I think its lack of longevity is a real weakness, but its aoud is superior. A reticent thumbs up.

Sometimes I think Montale can put Aoud in anything and VOILA! it will work magic. Aoud *seems* to be able to make anything it surrounds exciting. That probably is not accurate, but I seem to find all of these Montale Aouds to be intoxicating.

Now Royal Aoud was the fourth or fifth Montale Aoud that I have tried. The above observation is not really a reflection on this scent in particular, but rather a cumulative observation. This one is smoother than some, fruity, with rose and spices too. I find it delightful and intoxicating, but not as intense as others. Probably not my favorite in the line and one that I will pass on for now, but excellent nevertheless.

Added comment 14 Feb 10: I did end up developing a deeper appreciation of Royal Aoud and eventually acquired a bottle. I find the drydown to be extremely satisfying. There is a medicinal character to the topnotes (not uncommon with Montale Aouds), which is not my favorite part, but not severe and certainly worth the wait. A very sensual fragrance!

Aoud Lime without the citrusy blast at the start, and a slightly different wind down. Like other Montales Aouds Ive tried (excepting Attar) it takes half on hour for Royal Aoud to settle. Once it does it too is magical, rose thats wearable on a male. Not my favourite Montale but certainly not far off. The only thing bringing it down for me is the sweet vanilla wind down, but really Im just nitpicking, Royal Aoud is superb.

I have in front of me 9 Montale samples. I chose to wear Royal Aoud for a night out with friends. I have just come back. I have spent the whole night feeling ROYAL. this is Royal Aoud. I know what aoud smells like. But this aoud is the crown jewel. Etherial yet woody, sensual yet dry, lingering yet not cloying. If you want to know what aoud smells like probably this is the one. If you want to know what Montale is capable of definately this is the one.

if one has to be introduced to oudhs, i think this would be the safest way to do so. Royal Oudh is well, Royal. a very familiar smell (kumquat), sweetened by grapefruit, its sweet to an extent, but its stops way before one would call it fruity or gourmand. i really loved the opening notes of this one. makes one feel like one of those rich sheik arabs. the oudh in it is massaged in the background with slightly sweet fruity notes along with rich spices...the oudh is very much put in background and acts as a rock solid base for other top and midnotes...the whole balance of this frag amazes me..to see how the intensity of the oudh is controlled from top to midnotes is to be witnessed...its only in the base tht the oudh and some kinda chilli notes rule the roost..giving us a totally different frag that it was in start.....overall, worth sampling.
