Doing a comparison today--TF Tobacco Oud on the right, Lalique Hommage A L'Homme on the left. The left is winning.
I'd echo the vote for a sampler. If you'd rather go for a bottle, I'm a fan of Eau de Cartier and Lalique Hommage A L'homme for the price range/style that you're talking about. The latter isn't...
Yeah, this is probably true. I've put off buying GIT, if only because it feels "older" than I try and pull off at work. For me, it would be Aventus first.
Ever been flipping through a magazine, and thought to yourself, "That guy looks like he would wear X?"
Ever gotten a sample, or done a blind buy, and discovered something you thought...
Frapin 1270, first time wearing it from a sample. I like it so far.
I'm about halfway through trying the samples. Winner to date? Un Voix Noire. Tokyo Bloom would be up there, too, if it was a bit stronger.
Had to wait 'til payday, but got an order for some samples in. Wanted to let you know what I have coming--some drawn directly from your suggestions, others are variations on those...
Thanks all--appreciate the thoughtful responses. Keep 'em coming. I think I'll have a solid order for perfumed court in my near future.
Haven't posted in awhile--in large part, because I've discovered and invested in enough things I like that also provide enough variety to wear through the week/month/year. Which is great....
Going against the grain--I'm a Green Valley fan. GIT has its time and place, but I can do (and enjoy) Green Valley more often.
TdH and Declaration, though I'm also burning through samples of AdP Colonia and Colonia Assoluta, and Annick Goutal Eau de Sud.
Your favorites are very close to mine. Very close. For what it's worth, my wishlist includes Diptyque Philosykos, Concentre d'Orange Verte, and Eau de Cartier. Kicking around...
Bond No. 9 Little Italy
I've enjoyed Etro's Patchouly the few times I've worn it--has all the qualities, without being ostentatious.
Think I'll do Green Valley today, as well.
I'm with you, Le Grand Duc--Antaeus or Derby is what came to mind for me.
SotD: Guerlain Vetiver
SotE: Serge Lutens Bois et Fruits
Mitchum solid here, too. My only complaint is--if I put it on right out of the shower, and I haven't totally dried off, it can be a bit slimey. Still works great, though. Might try some of the other...
Also a fan, and have never spotted any chlorine in mine.
Plus another one for MI, but I think L'Instant could do well on a warm Spanish day, too.
SotE: Carthusia Uomo
CdG Incense: Kyoto
Thanks--indeed, it would be the coffee and lemon I'm most interested in. I'll check out Messe de Minuit directly.
SotE: Serge Lutens Chene. Sampling my first Lutens--exciting!
My lady loves this stuff on me--one of her favorites. It's also a personal favorite, so that's nice. Since I've first smelled it, the metallic qualities have kind of faded into the background--I've...
So, some months back, I bought some Attitude after a better-than-expected first sniff at the mall. At first, I very much enjoyed it. Lately, I've been less thrilled--more aware of its synthetic...
Yeah, I'd probably be tempted to go the sample route, too. If only because I'm still exploring so many scents. If I had to pick a bottle, it would probably be TdH.
I wore Tom Ford's Grey Vetiver for the first time yesterday. It had all the stuff I liked about Guerlain, and none of the stuff I didn't. Less sweet and citrus. Smoother. Might be worth a try.
Heeley Sel Marin
I'm a big fan of the grapefruit in Hermes Un Jardin sur le Nil.
Tom Ford Grey Vetiver
switching to some polo double black for the evening.
I've gotten that vibe, too. Declaration has been a favorite for a while now. When I picked up a sample of The Vert, I immediately liked it, and put it on my wishlist. Took me a few wears to realize...
Picked up some new samples yesterday--trying Declaration Cologne today.
I don't have one signature scent that I'm thinking of, but have some themes in mind from those things I've worn.
At times, like Massive Attack or Milosh. Chill, understated. Mostly about making...
Though I haven't worn it a lot, I'm wearing it today, and could certainly get in to it: Green Valley.
Creed Green Valley
Jil Sander for Men
As the OP can no doubt tell, there's plenty of votes on both sides. +1 on the recommendation to test both before purchasing. Though I appreciate the quality, GIT just doesn't sit well on my skin. TdH...
S o t E: Eau de Cartier
+1 on d'Orange Verte, but probably the Concentre.
Last week, faced with a slew of early morning meetings, I asked for your good advice on scents that help wake you up. How about the flipside of that--say you've had a long day,...
Diptyque Philosykos... loving how this one plays in the summertime.
I'm a big Declaration fan, and Eau de Cartier is wearing well for me this summer.
I would say absolutely. I can think of three or four ex-girlfriends, whose memory I so closely associate with a scent, it's a bit surprising, even to me. Not something I had actually thought a lot...
It'll be Philosykos today. Hoping the rain stays away and I can enjoy this one outside.
+1 on Eau de Cartier... I also find myself wearing Guerlain Vetiver on those kind of occasions.
In honor of father's day, I'd get the dads some Philosykos. Think they would dig it.
Planning on Declaration today.
L'Instant de Guerlain... one of the few actual bottles I have, but I haven't been able to cozy up to it like I thought I might.
Ordered samples from Aedes...

I'm too new to this game to offer much comment, but will admit that I'm looking forward to seeing how VIW plays in the wintertime. Thanks for asking the question!
Hermes Un Jardin en Méditerranée
I use Dove unscented bar soap, which seems to work well. I've found that store brand shampoo and conditioner around here don't have much fragrance to them, regardless of how they are advertised....
Such cool stories--thank you for sharing these.
Fair point! Perhaps vetiver becomes the tradition, with the understood freedom to explore personal preferences in there. That said, it would be fun to be able to say that "the men of the X family...
I had the chance to take my dad out fragrance shopping recently--got him some Creed Vetiver as a birthday present. He was stoked, we bonded, it was nice. While pop isn't a stranger to...
Comme des Garcons 2 Man
Creed Millésime Impérial might do the trick...
I'm suffering through a few weeks of work days that start with 7am meetings. This, while I'm trying to kick a coffee habit. As such, I've been wondering about scents that get you going...
7am meetings=I need something to keep my eyes open. Tuscan Cypress made the cut.
I'm a fan of tuscan cypress, though it is, as other folks have noted here, pretty linear. Lasts forever on my skin.
The sun came out, yard work happened, and Encre Noire faded. An early afternoon lecture on early 20th century fashion inspired Antaeus for the evening.
Raining today--gonna do Encre Noire.
+1 on Encre Noire--though something minty and bracing might be fun, as well. Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca, AdP Tuscan Cypress...
Cartier Declaration today... love this one.
Wondering which stores you've found are interested in providing samples. I've gotten a few at Sephora, though have run out of things that I like to sample from them. Had any luck...
I get much of that vibe from Voyage d'Hermes. I don't *like* it very much, but I do get that vibe.
Wearing Creed's Green Valley today.
Felt like I needed something I could count on today--no messing with samples. Terre d'Hermes it is.
Balle de Match
I so enjoyed my sample of Tuscan Cypress yesterday, I've got it on again today. Still love it.
might do a little comparison/contrast today... baie de genievre on one hand, tuscan cypress on the other...
Slept in late today, first time in a while. I think it will be some d'Orange Verte to perk the eyes up.
I've got Un Jardin Sur le Nil on today.
Went sample crazy today--ordered some decants of Green Valley, Cipresso di Toscana, Balle de Match, Philosykos, Un Jardin en Mediterranee, Antaeus, and Comme des Garcons 2 Man. Never tried any of...
I'm interested in exploring your thoughts and recommendations on what fragrances seem to "work well" together when two people are out on the town. Though my wife has yet to become the...
Baie de Genièvre
Polo Double Black
Eau de Lalique
Un Jardin en Méditerranée
Helmut Lang Men
+1 on Virgin Island Water, or you might check out Hermes Un Jardin Sur le Nil. More of a grapefruit note in the latter, but nice citrus all the same.
It's interesting to think about how personality/identity might be influenced by sense of smell. I've begun to notice, in my very few months of exploring fragrance, that I'm increasingly attracted to...
Signature: Encre Noire
Work: Creed MI
Night Out: TdH or Declaration
Close Quarters: Polo Double Black
Daring: ...not sure I have one, yet.
Upper Class: Baie de Genièvre
I just discovered that Sephora carries Guerlain Vetiver in my area, and made sure to take advantage of their generous sample policy.
Here's a question: if you could rename any fragrance, with a name of your own creation, what fragrance would you pick, and what would the new name be? Maybe you've got a favorite fragrance whose...
