Minty freshness in a bottle...
Geranium Pour Monsieur today
Well I managed to try the Rose Poivre and have to say I am not impressed. It seems weaker than I remember it. Much weaker. To the point that even on paper it did not last. Oh well waiting for a...
Bumping this thread (seen as I started it).
It seems that The Different Company now delivers to the UK from its site; delivery is around 17 EUR to the UK. I had originally ordered some samples...
Ok thanks. Please do let us know how it goes. Fragrance net is not so great when buying from the UK as they charge the VAT on top plus the £12 or so for shipping, but it might still be worth it if...
Out of curiosity which version of these did frag net send you? Is it the new magnetic cap (reformulated) type?
Sorry, hednic but that was at least a couple of years back...
Personally not a fan of either but I would take MR over Oud Wood any day.
I will do - thanks for wetting my appetite for more Sandalwood creamy goodness!
I managed to get to a small shop on my lunchtime walk. I couldn't resist a small spritz of Egoiste rubbed on both...
Egoiste is not a bad suggestion, I'm just not sure what the current version smells like. Not bought a new bottle in a while.
As many have said, Portrait of a Lady. Despite the name this is...
Well after falling in love with Epic Man a few years ago, I think this may just be it. I am going out later to try the reformulated version of Lyric Man/Woman and Epic as well.
I wonder if...
Hmmm will have to check my Amouage Epic Man old formulation (Dec 2012). I have very litle left but it has lasted me very well over the years. I am a huge Amouage fan and I think the reformulations...
I think I have a new 2014 bottle sitting at home. My previous bottle (2012) finished last month. I haven't sprayed the new one yet so will crack it open later and report back.
+1 on this. How on earth could I forget Bois des Îles? Wonderful creamy sandalwood fragrance and a great fragrance name too!
Dries VN was recommended to me by a sales rep at Les Senteurs but...
I've seen Chanel discounted at Heathrow many times before. They have a boutique in Terminal 3 and sometimes a pop-up store (usually around Christmas) in Terminal 5. Heathrow has Armani Prive...
Other than sneezing here and there or that 'cold' feeling from the evaporating alcohol, I've not had anything unusual from a fragrance.
Key rule for me is not to over-spray as you may regret it...
Hmmm... was going to ask if you've tried wearing this in the summer. Don't overspray but definitely worth a try. I love that oriental vibe in the blazing summer heat!
I agree with this. The Zegna exclusive range is very under-rated. Some very good scents in the range including the Patchouli.
Also maybe look for the Murdock Patchoulli which is a British brand.
Hmmm if you don't like aldehydes, maybe try Sycomore also by Chanel. Yes, it's packed full of vetiver in themid to top, but the dry down is pure sandalwood to my nose.
Also do try these at least...
Bump - added more fragrances
I'm pretty crazy about it too and combine it with quite a lot of foods too.
For me it has to be Homage Attar. Not available any more, but for the small quantity that I do have, this is a heavenly scent.
For postage only in the UK:
- Lorenzo Villoresi Sandalo, 50ml, with amount remaining as pictured. Fully boxed. £37 plus £3 postage plus PayPal fees.
- Boucheron Pour Homme limited...
Speize by Villoresi (thanks!)
Anyone know yet if this is available this side of the pond?
Sounds like one worth trying at the very least!
What a wonderful thread this is - a joy to read and really gave me an education on the rose taifi - of which I am a huge fan.
Rive Gauche, vintage
Still smelling it after a good 10 hours!!
Replacement 120ml of Creed Millesime Imperial
Geranium Pour Monsieur
Geranium Pour Monsieur for me today
Epic for me too. Nothing wrong with the others though, just rate Epic much higher than the rest.
According to my wardrobe, it's Aventus. But dig deeper and you'll see that since disowning Terre d' Hermes EdT, that would be my most worn.
Diptyque Eau Duelle is one that I would say is in the top five for me too.
Another Malle/Ropion legendary scent:
Fantastic - thanks for the links, lpp!!
Just had a really interesting read of the lot. And I agree with Persolaise that one spritz of the lady is all that is needed. Any more really does get to...
Tried my bottle and have to say it is probably stronger than the sample that I own. Strong smell right from the top, just after lifting the cap, without even spraying! Put one spritz and the whole...
My eyes are still blinking!!!
Most excellent choices, gentlemen!!
I don't "collect" as such either. What I own is what I use (I have a strict definition of what I mean by "use"). Some fragrances I will go through and never buy them again; others I will sell right...
I can change that - no worries!!
Unfortunately, I can't change each and every reply though which carries the typo right the way through, but at least it will be correct now so people in future...
I just got an almost full bottle - it got delivered today. I still have my sample purchased here in the UK and will try to do a side-by-side when I get a moment to myself. I'll report back here of...
I have owned all of them at some point in time, but right now I only have POAL.
Rive Gauche, vintage
Mine would have to be, in order of preference:
1. Portrait of a Lady
2. Serge Lutens Sa Majesté la Rose
3. Indonesian Oud
4. Van Cleef & Arpels Rose Velours
5. Amouage Lyric Woman
Starting off September with a really autumn-themed scent for me...
Well done!!! Another favourite of my wife's. Wouldn't wear it myself but love it a lot.
Mr Ropion, what have you done to us!!!!
Was going to suggest Terre d' Hermes in the Parfum strength too. Good to have in any man's wardrobe.
For me Amouage's Epic Man fits the bill perfectly in all sorts of weather. I actually find that I enjoy it just as much in the summer heat.
A legendary scent to say the least!!
Love the parfum's travel bottle & refill size! Pure class from Hermes.
Still available on quite a few (UK) online stores...
Quick Google search resulted in this very informative blog post on this iconic scent. Wish I could somehow get my hands on the true vintage - they don't make 'em like they used to!!
I'm with JH here.... what is the source for this info?
+1 on both of the above.
Amouage Epic Man would be on my shortlist too...
Terre d' Hermes Parfum
It depends when you are making this test...
For me, I get a lot of citrus in the opening, but can't help notice the nutmeg and ginger. That's really quite strong at the top but very nicely...
Vintage Rive Gauche
I too think your best bet is to get the real thing, if that's what you like.
I'm surprised however that no one in this thread has mentioned Indonesian Oud by the Zegna private collection. It's not...
Scott that's a fantastic explanation. Many thanks for that!!!
I would go for something like Rive Gauche vintage or Geranium Pour Monsieur, both of which are great performers in the heat.
This is sound advice. Wear something inoffensive that won't distract you, but rather relaxes you a bit so that you can be calm when you write down your answers.
Good luck from me too! I'm sure...
Good to see the AdP top of your list! :)
It's a really well made scent by AdP with the quality that you'd expect.
If you like mint, which is abundant in the Mediterranean parts of the world, I suggest you ask your folks to seek out Frederic Malle's Geranium Pour Monsieur. I recently discovered this one and find...
Same here. Very underwhelmed by this range...
I would steer clear of Green Irish Tweed if he doesn't like mint. I know, it's not a stated note, but I have had people tell be in the past that I am wearing a 'minty perfume', so one to be cautious...
Welcome to basenotes, gromit!!
There are plenty to choose from, depending on how much you are willing to spend.
Easily available on the high street:
- Terre d' Hermes, is a great one
Thanks, Scott. Very useful response.
I note my Geranium Pour Monsieur bottle is 91% by vol. Given this isn't much of an EdP in terms of strength, projection, etc but Malle's claim to be an EdP,...
Plenty of niche to choose from...
Amouage Epic is one to look into, as is Villoresi's Sandalo.
Looking further, there's Diptyque, L'Artisan and MPeG to choose from. Not mentioning Frederic...
It is awesome I know, but another really good one (with maybe two seconds longer longevity) is Truefitt & Hill's offering of the same name. Very fresh lime zesty scent. Great summertime 'pick me up'...
I haven't tried Tobacco Rose, but I thought I'd make the following observation about POAL, having just got a sample and gone totally bonkers over it. Both myself and my wife love it!! (My bank...
For me, I only own three that have the note in there in high doses:
- Amouage's Homage Attar
- Amouage's Epic Man
- Diptyque's Eau Lente*
* OK this contains opoponax, knows otherwise as sweet...
Very good range of products, but they can be found even cheaper than that if you look around!! Some sellers on ebay seem to be selling testers or other random products from their range at really good...
Acqua di Parma Colonia original
Zegna's Essenza di Zegna
Chanel Egoiste Cologne Concentree
Amouage Homage Attar
I haven't been a fan of any Tom Ford ever, so I would go for the Acqua di Parma as well. Much better overall scent if you ask me and a highlight for 2014!
The Glossary of Terms in Just Starting Out is a good read for questions like these.
If you have already tried Epic Man but prefer Epic Woman, try also Epic Woman in the extrait strength. Beautiful stuff. For me though, it's got to be Epic Man all the way.
Rive Gauche, vintage
My wife has recently got into the respectable AdP Acqua Nobile line. Think her favourite is Gelsomino (jasmine). Not your average floral scents as they are blended very nicely with woods and other...
Nice one, Claire!!
Green Irish Tweed
There is no Terre d' Hermes EDP. It is in fact a Pure Parfum
Dominique Ropion's superb Geranium Pour Monsieur, once again!
There goes another one then...
I'll try and check here from the UK counters and see if I can find out more info.
I'm surprised by your findings too, MM. I get straight up coffee right from the top of EdI. Admittedly, I don't own a bottle right now (mainly due to budget restrictions), but this is more of a...
Done - thanks!
Wow, it's rare that anyone says thank you here these days :)
Makes us mods really happy that our community is of benefit to people around the globe. Happy days.
If it's OK with you Diamondflame, I'd like to pinch your description and use it in the Just Starting Out Glossary thread here:
