+1 for Roger et Gallet Gingembre
I think it is normal to like only a small percentage of the fragrances you sample.
At first I was surprised by that, but now I think it is a feature of how our olfactory systems work.
Rochas Moustache = old school citrus + civet.
Sayonara, and thanks, Rich! You will be missed--
how about some angela ciampagna liquo?
Goutal Eau du Fier
Dominica: short-lived reference bay rum.
St. John's: more complex and long-lasting, very satisfying.
Bay Rum was big in the 1960s, so yeah, old school.
I would recommend ASAQ Dahn Al Aoud Anteeque
Agree with Azzaro pour Homme.
Also Karl Lagerfeld Cologne, if he can handle some powder.
By Kilian Pure Oud 10ml decant (x2).
Kenzo Jungle Elephant 5ml mini.
Atelier Cologne Pomelo Paradis
Roger et Gallet Fleur d'Osmanthus
Tiffany for Men[/B] After Shave, vintage, 100ml bottle, used once, 70USD shipped. (old box, bottle probably predates 2002, as price on bottom of box denominated in lire).
I am coming to the realization that I can cut back on quantity across the board.
I have very few fragrances of which I need more than 20ml.
So it is time to decant and sell/trade.
+1 for Chilum. AbdesSalaam is the master.
+ 1 for Une Rose, quite remarkable rose + truffle. Test it. Not sure about general wearability, however.
Rose 31 is also good as a dark rose option.
Dahn Al Aoud Anteeque by Abdul Samad Al Qurashi
Available in the USA through the World in Scents.
+1 for Eau Noire (but, as mentioned, you have to like immortelle)
Just wore 1725 to a wedding on Saturday, it was perfect.
Need to revisit 1740 and Tubereuse 3 again.
Civet adds depth to a fragrance.
I like it a lot more than other animalic notes: castoreum, hyraceum.
I was thinking Jicky too--
Turtle Vetiver Back
Maximum respect for Theorema, I find it unisex btw.
It has also been hard for me to get my head around the leather note.
Tried quite a few, but didn't really see leather fragrances as being wearable or desirable.
Recently I finally fell for...
Goutal Eau du Fier.
From your list I prefer Cuir Mauresque. It isn't perhaps the truest leather, but it is an incredibly satisfying blend of leather, floral and spicy notes, with a little civet to ground it.
Both are worthy, but 1725 is much more powdery and less wearable IMO.
Though I just wore 1725 to a wedding, and it was perfect.
When I started with perfumes a few years back, I found SL fragrances to be a huge letdown. Over time, however, I have come to really appreciate a number of them. In my experience, they are rich and...
Interesting--how long ago did this reformulation take place? Must have been pretty recently.
I dug out my Sables boxes to check the ingredients, I got backups two years ago, when they had the...
Sables is a masterpiece.
+1 for CDG Luxe Patchouli
Great thread above!
Cinnamon is not an uncommon note, but there are few fragrances built solely around it.
I really like the cinnamon in Sables. But you have to like immortelle for that.
Hard to imagine!
Sables has always been a tenacious and immodest scent. I am suspicious of the bottle redesign, perhaps a sign of watered-down product.
Glad that I have substantial backups.
Tempting! Will sample.
AbdesSalaam is a genius.
Interesting thread, I definitely think about these pairings.
Problem is, I am definitely not a incense/frankincense fan, perfume-wise. For the more sombre holidays (All Saints, etc) I tend to...
curious to know if there is anything planned in the next week or two? in town, though briefly--
Thanks for your observations, Colin--definitely agree that IB is more floral. And thanks for the heads-up on the new release--
This blog post from Grain de Musc also prompted me to think about the...
I am not looking for testimonials from 1740 lovers, but specific comparisons from people who have sampled both.
I only have a .7ml Luckyscent dabber to sample, so I am interested in hearing from anyone who is familiar with both.
Lets consider the pyramids:
• Top Notes
• Bergamot, Davana...
A whimsical composition from Giacobetti.
Can also recommend Honoré de Prés Chamens Party. The smoky vibe there is almost sausage-y, but I like it--
I have numerous 10ml decants at work, and tend to apply there as I swim before going in--
Goutal Eau du Fier
Quite rightly, indeed!
Really like the saffron note, it has a slightly soapy aspect to it (which I am very aware of in paella and bouillebaise).
It does a great job of mellowing oud fragrances,...
Emirates Basenoters: what should I make sure to sample?
On our way from Sweden to a destination in the Indian Ocean.
Chypre Palatin is a fragrance with amazing, extended range, from aldehydic top to castoreum bottom. I like to compare it to a chypre like Diorella.
Invasion Barbare is likewise an formidable...
If you like Animale for the tobacco/tubereuse blend, you might also like AbdesSalaam's Don Corleone. Somewhat similar, but drier and more wearable in my book.
Ongoing experiments with Sables:
As mentioned above, have been blending at a ratio of 1 drop to 1ml.
I was motivated to try this combo because I really like Sables, and read of a Basenotes...
After a lengthy hiatus, I am back.
Am blending hyraceum with Goutal Sables, 1 drop to 1ml. Seems like a good combo, the herbal qualities of immortelle with the hyraceum.
I know this is not the intended usage, nor any way to create a tridimensional experience, but I have experimented a bit with wearing straight hyraceum.
From the nozzle, I found the hyraceum to...
Dear Basenotes friends:
I hope this isn't out of line, but I wanted to mention that I have published an article on smell in games in which I mention the Basenotes community and other relevant...
I've tried both, and prefer the EdP.
I like saffron and oud combos, such as Pure Oud and Oud Velvet Mood.
Goutal, Eau du Fier
Second Geranium pour Monsieur and Turtle Vetiver Back.
Like several of the above folks, I use a Merkur Futur. It is a great first DE razor. I use it with Feather, Astra and Personna Super blades, get the best shaves from the latter two.
I also have a...
I like Heeley Figuier, it has a very nice melon note, as opposed to the coconut/floral feeling of Philosykos (which I also like).
Why not just get some Hay? Or Fieno, if you are shopping in Italy.
Hay is complex enough that a simple tincture of hay absolute smells just great. I recommend Abdes Salaam's French hay:...
Great deal for a great perfume.
I'm testing Velvet. It shares several notes with, and smells quite a bit like By Kilian Pure Oud. The main difference is a very nice cinnamon note that is present in the top. Still, I prefer Pure...
I recommend you also try Les Nez Turtle Vetiver Back.
Regrets, I've had a few . . .
I also voted for Fumerie Turque as my favorite from the list, but overall I really prefer Don Corleone by Abdes Salaam.
I agree with Alfarom, Abdes Salaam has some awesome stocks of aged Mysore sandalwood. Try it out.
I use them to train my nose to recognize notes in more complex compositions.
I also make solid perfumes, and am looking at making custom aftershave.
Thanks for the article reference--
loves: immortelle, cinnamon, sandalwood, saffron, coconut (fig), ginger
dislikes: amber, incense (frankincense), cumin
my understanding is that it is fine to refill with another fragrance after rinsing the atomizer with alcohol. water might be fine also, but i probably wouldn't--
i like the original yohji homme, and really hope that they might even revive the after shave (its fantastic to slap some on after shaving with a lavender based soap such as martin de candre).
I can see a vague family resemblance, but 1725 is much more powdery, which affects wearability for me--
+1 Demeter Gingerale, slight but fun, with fizz and citrus on a ginger topnote (and not much else).
Also check out Roger et Gallet, Gingembre, my favorite ginger cologne.
Another fragrance with a...
Try Abdessalaam's Chillum.
There is no doubt that Calice Becker does quality work.
I am a real fan of Pure Oud.
+1 on LesNez Turtle Vetiver Back. I'm wearing this a lot lately.
What a beautiful, brilliant opening accord! Vetiver, coconut and violet. If you like those notes independently, I predict you will like interplay here. The coconut does a great job of tamping the...
AbdesSalaam Don Corleone: a great male floral, tobacco + tuberose--
There are definitely strategies for acquiring IB below the sticker price, and they all involve the generous MDCI sample program.
I have mentioned this before, but I built a 50ml stash for less...
Maximum respect to:
Somerville Metro Man
You may want to consider Lucido by the Japanese company Mandom (!). It has a light menthol fragrance but is otherwise unscented. Its a splash with some glycerine for moisturizing. Apparently you can...
I have a Merkur Futur, an adjustable DE razor that is terrific for beginners--
DE safety for me: Merkur Futur and Feather stainless razors. Astra, Feather and Personna Med Prep blades.
Astras, Feathers and Personna Med Preps--
Proraso Red (Sandalwood)
Trumpers Coconut oil Cream
Great stuff, I have tried peppermint (back in the day, when it was the one and only), almond (which is sweet, fine), and my current favorite tea tree. Very invigorating with my Japanese nylon...
So true! Completely agree, very special stuff.
I am a big fan of both Chillum and Don Corleone, and own both.
Chillum is much more about sandalwood, and it is an impeccable sandalwood. Abdessalaam's sandalwood is the nicest I have experienced....
IB is fantastic, and versatile. The comparison to 1725 is valid, and I like both, but 1725 is much more powdery IMO--so you have to like that--
I am not an amber fan--something screechy about it.
Super interesting house. AbdesSalaam is inspiring and generous in his knowledge. All natural, somewhat modest, pure and really interesting takes on tobacco in Tabac, Chilum (amazing sandalwood!) and...
To me the smokiness is like fire-roasted red peppers--
I really like Pure Oud. It costs a lot less if you buy the 50ml refill bottle from Luckyscent and decant it into your own atomizer (see Incense Oud comment about price above).
Why, why blind buy? There are so many places to get samples--
Um, I thought the "M" stood for "Maison." Do you mean "FK?"
Goutal Eau du Fier: smoky lapsong souchon
