I always want to suggest a few synthetics. Before I started using them I didn't get anywhere with my blends. Here are a few suggestions:
Vanillin or Ethyl vanillin. Most blends benefit from a bit...
Perfumers Apprentice is a wonderful place for budding hobby perfumers. I have only bought aroma-chemicals from them so far, but the service and dedication of the owner(s?) is awesome. I highly...
You need to add other stuff to make the musks "fly". I'm not sure what to use. A lot of scents labelled musk are aldehydic and floral as well as musky. Kiehl's musk has other animal notes in it....
For me Iso-E Super has no smell on a blotter for about twelve hours. After that it gets stronger and stronger for several days. On skin I can't smell it for about an hour. Also when you blend it with...
I'm going to try some new musks and would like suggestions. So far I have (off the top of my head) galaxolide, velvione, ethylene brassylate, thibetolide, ambrettolide and a base called animalid...
I second safraleine. I haven't worked with it yet, but it definitely has a leather feel to it. And it smells like saffron of course. I suspect, but don't take my word for it, that's what they use in...
Birch tar is pure smoke to my nose.
Eek! the Shiseido ones have a microscopic layer of some sort of clay (bentonite?) and doesn't show up. Clean & Clear and MAC's aren't powdered at all.
I'm pretty sure they do use synthetics. Maybe they use a lot of naturals but some of the notes has to be synthetic I think.
I shave twice a day because I use an electric shaver and you can't really get a very close shave with those.
I can't even use a razor.
Kiehl's have a shower gel in their Original Musk line. The Body Shop's White Musk For Men also comes as one.
MAC has a great product called Blot Powder. It doesn't deposit any colour and is extremely light. It just eliminates shine without looking like powder.
But an even more fool-proof choice would be...
Thank you for your replies!
I allready have a lot of essential oils, but this is the first time I've been able to buy small amounts of synthetics, since the goodscents company doesnt't shop...
Gucci Rush for men and Let Me Play the Lion. CdG Avignon might translate as dry wood if you sort of forget it's really incense.
Andwaitaminute...90% of western perfumes contain vetiver? I think I...
These might be totally wrong but anyway.
Les Nez Antimatière
Hermes Eau de Merveilles
Antonia's Flowers Tiempe Passate
Rosine Ecume de Rose
I think these all have an ambergris note in...
Is it tretinoin that you're using? I'm guessing so because retinol is much weaker and wouldn't make much of a difference at 0.1% and you wouldn't need an prescription.
I'm a little scared of using...
I'm going to order the Beginner's Aromachemical Kit from perfumersapprentice.com and I was wondering if anyone is familiar with it. I'm buying it primarily for evaluation, but am also hoping to take...
But your daily shampooing will probably casue more damage than the occasional spritz of perfume.
Hair = dead matter
And it won't dry your hair out. Showering is more drying than the most excess use of alcohol-based fragrances will ever be.
Nail polish is fun. I like an orange like OPI's Osaka to me baby. Silver is cool too.
I'm wearing CdG Avignon today
De profundis clamavi ad te, Domine.
I'm wearing Comme des Garcons Avignon.
Hullo there! Long time since I was here.
Wearing Habit Rouge edt.
I think you should keep up with the oils and creams. Also, after you wash your hands, push down cuticles quickly and gently when you dry them. If you make it a habit, hangnails won't have a chance to...
I like cumin in a perfume. It's such a rich, torrid note. I sometimes crave Kingdom. I understand why people find it sweaty-smelling, but I have no problem with that.
I'm wearing a tiny bit of Insolence today. Sweet and fruity, but I quite like it. It smells comfortable. And it mingles with residual Knize Ten on my sweater. an interesting combination.
You might like Feminité du Bois by Shiseido. It's fruity and spicy and very woody. It's one of my favourites.
I'd wear my 98-year old grandmother gently wrapped around my throat, letting out whiffs of mothballs and Rochas' Femme.
But, my grandmother being burned to dust some years ago, I'd opt for...
I'm wearing lashings of Passage d'Enfer, the Vaticans answer to fabric softener. I love this stuff.
What's this Eau Fraiche you're talking about? I've never heard of it. Is it new? I also didn't know you could get the fonds de parfum anymore. Please tell me more.
I received my generous samples yesterday. Totally made my day. I really like The Unicorn Spell. To me it smells like violets and clary sage. It reminds me a bit of Grey Flannel, but sweeter in the...
Les Nez' L'Antimatiére. I'm not sure what to think of it so far. Can someone explain to me what I'm smelling?
Nobody answered this??!!??
These are great! The cheapest (and one of the best) ones are from Clean & Clear. They are made from some fancy oil-absorbing plastic polymer. You press them to your face...
Caudalie Gentle Cleanser (two bottles) I have given up on foaming cleansers completely. The bubbles no longer tickles my nose, as Auntie Mame said about Champagne. This is a lotion cleanser that you...
Eau Noire. Hmm. Vanilla icecream and curry powder. Probably great but not for me.
I don't own either, but want both. I think they are different. Similar, but different. I'd even say Opium is slightly more masculine than JHL. Maybe not masculine, but more restrained. Cinnabar is...
I have no experience of the spray mechanisms on the exports, but I do transfer the juice from the "bell bottles" into small sprays and the exposure to air is quite minimal. Sprays aren't 100% air...
I forgot all about Halloween! Dang it!
I'm wearing Les Nez' Unicorn Spell for the first time an really liking it so far. A very green violet, a bit like Grey Flanell in style in the beginning....
I like the Ultra Facial Moisturizer and #1 lip balm.
She's doing, actually.
But I agree, they sound fascinating. I am very eager to smell L'antimatiére. Anti-matter indeed.
Muscs Koublaï Khän
Feminité du Bois
I can't count, apparently.
Interesting. Is it similar to Universel? I quite liked that one. Chanel has really nice foundations overall I think.
I'm certainly interested...
High five! I love Aprés L'Ondeé on my pillow or just wearing it too sleep. It's so sweet and cool.
I also like Feminité du Bois. Both bring me sweet dreams.
Ditto thanks to you. :)
Peachy? Are you sure you don't mean Mitsouko?
Shalimar is wonderful, but it's my mothers favourite so I do feel weird wearing it.
The only thing collagen will do is moisturize. What you *can* do is boost your skin's own collagen production. The most effective active ingredient you can get OTC is retinaldehyde. It's patented to...
Lutens' Mandarine Mandarin is quite big. Not violently so, but big. Reminds me a bit of the original Joop! fragrance.
SMN Peau d'Espagne is pretty smoky to me.
Thanks to the lovely Lillie I'm wearing Agent Provocateur. A powerful, fiery chypre that reminds me of two other fragrances: Paloma Picasso and, less obviously, Czech & Speake No.88. I really like it.
Wé're having a big party here at work in a while so I just sprayed on some Musc Ravageur. It really stinks up the whole room. Marvellous!
Hasn't premiered here yet. I probably wouldn't wear anything. I have to ask, was the whole room a miasma of dozens of different perfumes? It could happen. Everyone thinking "I have to wear perfume...
The notes list ambergris as an ingredient (synthetic of course), but I can't really smell it. There is a nice touch of civet though.
Muscs Koublaï Khän and Ambre Sultan are the sexiest and naughtiest I have tried. They have this slight private parts feel to them. I'm not very familiar with Lutens' florals so I can't comment on...
You're a brave man, Shifts! Good for you. The Touche Eclat really is great, but it's so horribly expensive for the amount you get, 3.5 ml, that I refuse to buy it. If it was 10- or 15ml like most...
I love Strawberrynet. And the quality of Chantecaille products is amazing.
I bought a new cleanser yesterday. Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Purifying Cream Cleanser. I usually don't care for Arden...
Thanks Cedric! I think I'll just go for the edp then.
So it's not your favourite, Pigeon? I really like it and I miss it a lot, so I'm going to get a bottle anyway. And then I'm off to Helsinki...
I wish Black was *more* rubbery. Or at least that the rubbery leather feel would last longer on me. Unfortunately I'm rushed to the vanillic basenotes very quickly when I've tried this. And then I...
Musc Ravageur. I feel hot! Honestly.
Is there a big difference between the two. I'm considering the EdP, but the parfum isn't really that expensive, so now I'm not sure if I should get that instead. Anyone familiar with both?
Haven't tried the MPG I'm afraid. I do enjoy L'Eau d'Ambre. To me it's light and airy with a whiff of burnt sugar in the base.
Etro's Ambra is a really nice, but I think I'll save up for Ambre...
Guerlain Bouquet de Faune (so I can smell it)
Guerlain Djedi (ditto)
No, it was a limited edition years ago. Don't remember much of it. On the oriental side, but nothing memorable.
I prefer the edt of Opium. It has this clear quality going on. The Edp is like candy. With hair on it.
She's Alison Goldfrapp, the most fabulous chanteuse ever.
Paco Rabanne Teneré
That's not how I work at all. I often have to try a fragrance three or more times before it gets me hooked. And those fragrances tend to be the ones I don't grow tired of, the ones that don't reveal...
I have smelled all of them, either in nature or as essential oils or absolutes. The ones I haven't smelled in extracted forms are:
angelica (flowers or roots) Can't remember
basil (leaves) ...
Most of us have no idea what separate molecules smell like and not much chance to find out. I can detect coumarin and quinoline in a fragrance, but that's about it.
What I don't put put much...
Sometimes I do get a little Obsession from Chergui, but never much. I'm allergic to Obsession for men so I can't wear it. Chergui is far superior in my opinion.
Frederic Malle Noir Epices is very dry. Almost a chypre. Crackling spices and woods. Aramis' JHL isn't very sweet either in my opinion.
An unfortunate mix of Acqua di Gio and Muscs Koublaï Khän. Don't ask.
Probably, yes. ;)
Yay! Now doesn't that feel nice? I'm potty-training Dzing! as we speak. He's being a good boy.
Buying blind is always scary, but Cacharel pour Homme is really nice and unusual. Spicy and fresh and a little bit floral. Lighter in feel than Santos and Equipage (if I remember the latter...
Interesting tidbit about inonone/hedione. Thanks!
You could try the Annayaké scents. I have only tried Tsukimi, a sweet-spicy-woody-fruity concoction for women. Really nice.
Try spraying it. It will definitely amp it up. In my opinion there's nothing faint about Chergui.
A light application of Musc Ravageur with some Knize Ten or Etro Gomma. The leather cuts down the sweetness of MR to great effect.
Think I'm going to wear that this evening. Thanks for the unintended reminder.
I'm wearing my dear old friend Dzing!
Sh*t! That's all I can say. Ordering the edc asap while I can get it. *kicks Guerlain in the shin*
I have only tried the edc and edt, but I'm very happy with those two formulations, so I'm not really interested in the others. I think I'll order the edc, since my last bottle was...
John Galliano if they don't go the ususal 100%-focus-group-accpetance route. He seems to talk a lot about pirates. I want a piratey fragrance. Arrgh!Shiver me timbers! A pox on ye gangrene-infested...
Maybe you're like Grenouille in Perfume? You have no smell of your own? ;)
I always notice a difference. Most scents smell sweeter on me and are being rushed to the basenotes pretty quickly. I'm...
I'm considering getting a bottle of Habit Rouge, an old time favourite that I haven't worn in a few years and it's with a pang of anxiety that I see they have changed the packaging and bottle. Has...
The first fragrance I fell in love with was Habit Rouge, but I didn't buy it until I was about 16.
I read about that Stilton fragrance and think it sounds quite fascinating. It's supposed to be unusual, yet wearable. And I like the bottle. Hope they make it widely available.
Lillie let me have a bit of Tsukimi and yes, it's very nice. Spicy-plummy-woody. Reminds me of mulled wine. Warm and autumnal.
I use one spray on each side of my neck, or one on my chest and one on my wrists. It certainly packs a punch. Two sprays is enough, three is plenty.
2nd Etro Gomma and Caron Tabac Blond. Gomma is simpler, Tabac Blond has lots of carnation. Both are heavy on the isobutylqinoline as are most of the recommendations above, but these two come closest...
Only some skincare backups and a new sunscreen, La Roche Posay Gel SPF 40 PPD 19. A lot better than Vichy Capital Soleil SPF 30 PPD 10, but still sticky and shiny.
You can get Armani...
L'Air du Temps
Feminité du Bois
I agree. I think it's going to eb big too. Fingerspitzgefühle you know.
And hello Lillie! Nice to see you over here.
Feminité du Bois. Woody, oriental, yet not stifling in the heat.
It reminds me a bit of Tabac Original.
