I wear it year round, but some might feel it's too strong for summer wear.
Keep in mind that most 'classic' scents-- Azzaro Pour Homme, Kouros, etc-- were designed not to clash with the smell of cigarette smoke, while many newer frags will clash badly (ever smelled Acqua di...
Very impressive? Anyways, I've spent a fair amount of time in Europe, and certainly smelled a wider variety of fragrances on people than I ever have in the US. And the degree to which classic...
This is the opposite of what I've heard. The stereotype in the fragrance industry is that Americans want to smell like they've just stepped out of the shower, and nothing else.
I think there are a few genres where you aren't getting the best available fragrance. For example, I'd skip New West and get Issey Miyake or Acqua di Gio. Instead of Drakkar, I'd do Rive Gauche Pour...
Overthinking it, brah.
Kiehl's original musk is a good one that is overlooked.
Plus one on the Yatagan.
Sort of the point, no?
6 sprays of Kouros.
Be that guy.
I mean, I assume it's there for a reason, no?
I for one am sick of the Pure Malt rumor threads. Mods! Can we please oh please just re-open the Pure Malt sub-board and start moving threads there?
Aoud Damascus is another one to sample, a bit more toned down while still maintaining the oud/rose center.
Really a good frag!
There's all sorts of good stuff at that price range. What sort of scents DO you like?
The thick glass probably distorts the appearance of the hollow part.
Gold is definitely not your father's masculine. I don't think it's feminine per se, but it is definitely plush and powdery and floral-- all characteristics that are more associated with feminine...
It's from 2003.
I still don't understand why anyone buys Molecule 01. You can get 10 ml of Iso E Super and 90 ml of perfumer's alcohol for about 15 bucks. Literally exactly the same thing, 85 bucks cheaper.
If Lutens sold Kiehl's Original Musk at $200/50ml, there would be five threads about it on the main page at all times.
Lucky for us, it's around $45/50 ml. Winning.
Oh yeah it's definitely all synthetic. I'm trying to figure out what on earth the guy was talking about when he said that Kouros had no civet, and to smell Guerlain Vetiver for a civet scent. This...
Care to provide some evidence for that claim before you go running your mouth about how other folks "arent listening"?
Well, if we're talking most popular in the sense of most widely used, my guess is that it's some synthetic musk or some element of the various synthetic oakmoss accords that the big compounding...
Out of left field: try Domenico Caraceni 1913.
Rose, frankincense, tobacco. Incredible.
who/what are you referring to?
Yeah, near-obsessive interest in hobbies (guilty, your honor) tends to be a guy thing in my experience.
Though that could be selection bias on my part-- cigars and pipes, fountain pens,...
I guess I just don't get K10. Smelled like a floral-scented face powder to me.
And I love all sorts of 'challenging' frags.
Yatagan and Pour un Homme have to be two of the best frag bargains out there. Easily equal to any of the top-end niche houses offerings in their respective arenas.
I do three shots to the chest under a shirt. No one has complained, people don't seem to make an effort to avoid me, etc etc.
Only success I've ever had was Kiehls Musk under Shalimar. Shalimar's drydown is just a bit too edible for my tastes; the Kiehls gave it a nice hit of funk to keep things out of the pastry display.
DKE here. FBs of DC 1913, Opus 1870, AdP Assoluta, Kouros, Brooks Brothers New York Gentlemen, Grey Flannel, Trumper's Limes, and Dunhill Pursuit (my very first fragrance from when I was around 15)....
Kouros is more in the aromatic fougere department, but it's hardly typical of the genre.
Play with this for a while!
I've looked for the perfect fragrance to wear to a U2 concert... But I still haven't found what I'm looking for.
Never got when people referred to Caraceni as a dark frag. The rose and frankincense give a bright, crackling impression to my nose.
Spin doctor? Puh-leeze. You'll notice that I qualified the initial post with about a million "this is only a rumor, probably not worldwide, don't panic, just passing it along" disclaimers.
Do we have any reason whatsoever to regard this as accurate?
IIRC most of those are from a pure art criticism point of view, though. They still thought it smelled awful, just that it smelled interestingly awful. A few folks might've liked it, though.
Probably best to stick with something light, and skip reapplication. I'd strangle someone who came and sat down next to me with full on top note explosion happening.
Purely about the sensual enjoyment, for me. I like to smell nice things.
One of the finest scents on the market. One of several reasons Im convinced that YSL is the finest designer house for men.
Report them for sandbagging prices. Seriously; eBay has a very specific policy against the "low listing high shipping" trick. It's an unfair way of generating traffic.
If you see it, report it....
+1 for Grey Flannel, Azzaro Pour Homme, various Caron.
Sorry, why? What's the point of going and spending twice as much money on a frag you wont like as much?
If you're that invested in appearing luxe and in the know, just make up a name to tell...
I go to college in the northeast and live in Texas in the summer, so similar boat here. I usually wear slightly heavier frags in the winter, stuff that might get cloying in the summer.
I won't dispute the claim that their reviews have something of a shoot from the hip and ask questions later vibe, but I never got the sense that they dislike florals or rose frags. Hell, Rive Gauche...
Eau d'Austerity Budgeting
Black Aoud is pretty dang exotic and mysterious.
Frenchmen of English descent.
NB that Platinum Egoiste and Egoiste are two completely different fragrances without even a passing resemblance.
Do try plain ol' Egoiste, she's a beaut.
Honestly, the whole idea of age appropriateness for fragrances strikes me as a bit absurd. I'm 21, and I regularly wear all kinds of 'old guy' frags, ranging from barbershop classics like Pinaud...
Elixir has some legs.
I find the top a bit off-putting. Still haven't really given it a fair shake though; I'll try it again.
Hey folks. I have a challenge for you.
I've got samples of a couple orientals that are supposed to have reasonably large doses of musk-- Shalimar and LAdDM, specifically. I find them a bit too...
No order. Only got to 9, nothing else came to mind as a clear favorite.
Penhaligon's Opus 1870
Rive Gauche PH
Depends if I want to defy the heat or embrace it. I'll stick with light, refreshing stuff if I want to try to stay cool, but for hot evenings outside, a thick oriental or leather can be pretty swell....
It has a weird clove/bubblegum thing it does for about an hour that put me off it. I quite liked the drydown-- rich masculine oriental w/vanilla and so on-- but the bit where you smell like purple...
UNHELPFULNESS ALERT: Neither of them; you can do much better at the price point. If you want something unique and awesome to show off, dusty department store frags aren't the way to go.
And why no...
I should hope Creed frags aren't chemical-free... Because then they'd be vacuum in a bottle.
Everything is a chemical. Air, water, alcohol denat, violet leaf absolute... All chemicals. Anything...
I'd say that the consensus of a large number of experts is what turns a subjective impression that something is masterful into an objective, or near-objective, fact that it is a masterpiece.
Very interesting! Is this something that people see other houses' stronger frags doing?
... they leave a physical sheen of oil on the skin after being sprayed on. I've noticed this with Black Aoud and Oud Cuir d'Arabie. Anyone else see this?
Small wonder they are so potent... They've...
I cannot possibly imagine that there is any difference between two 10% dilutions of Iso E Super. It's possible that there are different 'grades' of the stuff, but I think that's unlikely. More likely...
And the evidence that Creed uses natural ingredients is...?
The notion that Creed is UNDERrated strikes me as facially ridiculous.
I'll let someone else deal with the "oh no people will think...
Domenico Caraceni 1913 is a pretty good one for a suit and tie. Masculine rose/tobacco/frankincense with a chypre backbone.
Oh ye of little faith...
Kouros. Always Kouros.
That is, if you have a certain swagger in your step and a devil may care approach to life.
Light fresh scents are for boys. Kouros is for men.
My recommendation is to buy a bottle of lime EO and dissolve it in denatured alcohol. Et voila-- at least 300 ml of Trumper's Limes minus the annoying fake musk base, for around 15 bucks.
Egoiste and Platinum Egoiste share nothing but a name. Egoiste is a beautiful masculine floral/wood (veering toward but not quite reaching oriental). Platinum Egoiste is plonk....
I get more resemblance to Racquets than to Sartorial. The sharp notes are what stands out in Sartorial to me (along with the beeswax) and those make it feel pretty dissimilar to Clubman. I get much...
Do you have the vintage or the re-release?
Longtime lurker, first post on BN. Anyhow, it's definitely not a scent with violets, but Penhaligon's Hammam Bouquet is in my mind THE dandy's frag. Soft leather, rose, and a bit of animalic skank,...
