Serenity - Crispin Glover
There's this perfume called "Jicky" that uses (get this!) synthetics.
Great review, Mick_Trick. The tonka scares me, but I will definitely try it in the hope that I will again have my prejudices delightfully destroyed.
I really want to try La Via del Profumo's Tawaf now!
To me, the benchmark jasmine is, like hedonist222 said, vintage Olene. I really like Sarrasins, but it is almost like a wisteria soliflore with...
An unopened bottle of Chanel Cuir de Russie EdC, at least forty years old and in its original box and had the rubber stopper sealed with foil and intact, for $80.
I'd have to go with this one as well, even though i have never tried it - my reason being, then, is the awesome bottle.
Every single one of us started this way. It will be a sad day when one stops learning.
The sample III was applied yesterday evening. This one is certainly more like the oud chips that I burn (the chips are from Borneo, by the way) with a phenolic turpentine beginning that slowly, over...
An update that I received my oud samples today. I put the tiniest amount of sample 1 on my left wrist. It's quite phenolic at first, much like an Islay Scotch. It's only been 20 minutes, though, but...
My growth in knowledge and taste for fragrances has been inclusive as opposed to exclusive; over time I have changed to appreciate styles I didn't in the past (like Mitsouko) while still maintaining...
I'm excited as well - I'm a big fan of Diptyque and their style.
It has to be heated to some degree - with friction from your hand rubbing it, it releases its odor, but heating it over a coal is what really produces the typical ambergris smell.
I'd like to comment on the quality of your website is as well. Great images.
You should try Dior Granville.
Weird scents that I like are:
Vero Profumo Onda - it smells like a pillow that has collected years of oil from the head.
Comme des Garcons Stephen Jones - there's almost a yellow mustard...
I think you're looking for Oyedo.
That's a good site.
There's also the book, Floating Gold: A Natural (and Unnatural) History of Ambergris, which is a good read on the subject.
I placed an order for the oud. Yeah, I've burned agarwood on a burner and worn many "oud" fragrances, but I have no confidence on what oud truly smells like.
Thanks for providing this service,...
I got a chunk of some pretty good stuff for my birthday a few years ago - it's dark grey and is about the size of my thumb. It really, really looks like sun-bleached dog poop. I also have some...
The consummate masculine chypre is Chanel Pour Monsieur, even if the latest formulation is weak in the oakmoss compared to the vintage. Sigh, is so hard to get a good, much less great, typical chypre...
Iso E Super is very cheap and easily obtained through Perfumer's Apprentice in a small vial for about five dollars. It is a wood-like scent, but my perception is that it's more like black pepper. I...
I have a decant of Givenchy III.
I've got to agree with everyone who has said vintage Mitsouko, but just for discussion's sake, I will mention vintage Givenchy III, which is an incredible oakmoss-heavy chypre.
This is a good one, the Chanel Eau de Cologne. I also say Hermes Santal Massoia and Tom Ford's Gucci Pour Homme.
I came on here to say this. Babies have a magical smell that will soon pass once they get older. The use of a fragrance just for infants is one of the most bourgeois things I've ever seen and shows...
I came on here to say Patchouli 24 as well.
I'd also mention Kolnisch Juchten.
Also, a modern twist to the hypermasculine genre is Bel Ami Vetiver - you really can't go wrong with this one.
If only we were talking about Silver Mountain Water.
To me, it's a synthetic mess. All I get is ISO E Super and Ambroxan - I swear it's >40% Ambroxan.
That is very gracious of you, mumsy. Thank you!
Not many, if at all, mentions of vanilla-heavy fragrances, which is a pleasant surprise because that's always been portrayed as an aphrodisiac smell and I typically dislike it.
Jasmine soliflores like Olene or Jasmine Rouge.
I'd love to smell Portrait of a Lady on a woman who is not so lady-like.
I would love to have some of the Guerlain soaps. They currently sell a Shalimar and Habit Rouge soap, but I'm not really interested in those two. They had soliflore soaps in the past, no?
I'm a big fan of Ellena and find him to be a genius, but I can totally understand the dislike for his creations. They are light, transparent, and minimalist, but such fragrances fill a much-needed...
What would be awesome is if the ones made in the U.S. weren't IFRA compliant.
All you people must have had FAKES!!
The appeal to me is that it is something that is pretty much guaranteed not to leak, unless, of course, you are in a hot environment like Abu Dhabi. And by this, I mean that one is able to carry it...
Thanks for these recommendations. I thought Le Labo, though, only created some solids for a line of fragrances exclusive to Anthropologie.
Besides the Lush and the Diptyque, what other fragrances are sold in the solid medium?
I ordered the sample set and am VERY impressed with the packaging (I have yet to test them). It arrived very quickly and was in a mylar bag, with seven nice black sprayers arranged individually in a...
I'd throw into the discussion Anubis by Papillon - leather and incense with beautiful floral components (mostly jasmine) that fill in the gaps.
I will give you a million dollars (not really) if you do this. Please:
This thread really makes me want to try all the old Carons! This is a great discussion, guys.
Boy, these answers are all over the place.
Vol de Nuit
To put fragrances in historical, chemical, musical, and many other contexts that he puts his reviews, all the while being concise - of course opinions about fragrances are just that, but nobody does...
And, of course, he responds with the utmost humility and class.
I always wondered, hednic, why the avatar of a hyena?
I'm surprised it took so long to bring this one up. Portrait of a Lady is strong!
Most of my fragrances are one-spray-only, but ones of note to me are:
Portrait of a Lady
Giorgio for Men...
I've got a half bottle from around 2003. It really is a unique vetiver to my nose, especially since I've never smelled Envy. The major spice that fills in the crevices of the traditionally angular,...
I'm glad you posted on here, bbjr. The histrionics by the posters you quoted are not representative of the vast majority, and we know that it is indeed easy to throw around accusations and...
Ewww. Weird. No, and I have a bottle that same size which I bought about two years ago. It shouldn't have leaked like that, unless you had the bottle on top of your car engine in the middle of the...
Tiger Lily Perfumes, on Valencia Street in the Mission carries:
Papillon Artisan Perfumes
CB I Hate Perfumes
Maria Candida Gentile
ZGO in San Francisco carries about ten fragrances from the Mancera line.
For Amouage, the largest inventory is ZGO in the Castro. Jacqueline carries just a couple like Gold and Interlude. ZGO also carries about twenty of the Montale line. As far as Frapin is concerned, I...
Thanks guys, and what you are recommending is right up my alley - iris and tobacco. Leather? Hell yes!
Interestingly enough, I did try the Cafe Noir and didn't like it. I just have an aversion to...
Thanks, hednic. Fragrantica has *gasp* 209 fragrances listed by her! Prolific doesn't begin to describe her.
I need your help, guys and gals - I was at Tiger Lily here in San Francisco and Antonia, the proprietor, has about sixteen or more fragrances from Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. Which ones would you recommend...
Creed is so ubiquitous in the world that I can safely say that each batch is not made by hand. That's just silly, like the rest of the propaganda that Creed spews out. What happened to the spiel that...
All of them, apparently.
You mean like smoking crack?
Seriously, though, that's quite an endorsement coming from alfarom. I look forward to reading more of what you think about each one as well as others' views.
I met him at the Fragrance Salon a few years ago here in San Francisco. He's a VERY nice guy and has this permanent mischievous smile on his face that fits his fragrances. For a self-taught perfumer...
If anyone is willing to sell me a decant so I can experience this classic I would GREATLY appreciate it.
I also say the line from Norma Kamali are beautiful.
Iris 39 can absolutely be a male fragrance - if you happen to like it. The whole concept of gender designations for fragrances should be thrown out the window.
Iris 39 is really not floral at all....
Yeah, like when my Japanese mother in law was in London and had to pee really bad - she kept asking for a toilette and people were pointing her to apartment rental offices.
The apotheosis of bottle design is the Chanel extrait bottles - a thousand years from now it will still be beautiful.
A specific bottle is Vol de Nuit:
Interesting to me is...
When I saw the OP, I immediately thought of Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's quote on a pornography case: "I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be...
I want to reach out and slap that morally indignant woman.
How about Dominca Bay Rum? I've always wanted to try it because in high school I would get J Peterman catalogs and that would always be in there.
The Hermes Jardin Series.
I have a bottle of perfume that was custom made by Yosh Han. It's called _____'s Bane, with the blank filled in with my ex wife's name. She hated my fragrance obsession.
Man, I've been reading Aventus as Antaeus in my mind this whole thread. Now I need to go back and re-read it so I can gain some useful knowledge.
That's assuming there is a problem.
I don't see what the big deal is. I do this all the time and I am sure that women know that my reason for asking is "academic". The only thing that may unnerve them is the thought that what they're...
This is a good mention, and I must say that I like this one a lot. The big complaints I hear are about its longevity, but it lasts 8-12 hours on me.
The description on Luckyscent sounds fascinating.
Hey, my father still has 1/4 of a bottle left! That's AWESOME that your father designed the bottle. This is the standard by which my dad rates all fragrances; he used to get a bottle for Christmas...
Thank you for your quick response. I'm very happy that I recently bought a well-kept vintage bottle so I can revisit what impacted me so much in my youth.
I'm sure Alfarom is looking forward to this one as well.
Also, I'd like to know if Luca has worn the latest (past five years) formulation of Chanel Pour Monsieur, because it is a...
I'd like to be a member of the Perfume Police.
Tubereuse Criminelle is the most accurate tuberose out there, in my opinion. It is exactly like a warm room, closed off, with a tuberose sitting in a vase in the window.
I heard the notes are pretty linear.
But all that direct natural light (forgive them, Lord, they know not what they do)!!!
Your avatar checks out.
This. Since I have a large bottle of Chanel's Eau de Cologne, I can't imagine getting another one unless it blows my mind.
Awesome. Thanks for the link.
I just checked my bottle of Iris Tazo, and it has a metal sleeve below the sprayer head that does not unscrew. I attempted to firmly unscrew it with no luck. In summation, I think it is a clamped-on...
Oooh, that's good!
I've read your very good reviews before, and I agree that they are not for everyone, but they are perfect for the Japanese market for which she makes them. I really respect her for straddling the two...
I'm wearing Yoru no Ume tonight, which is apropos since they've almost finished blooming here in San Francisco. In my opinion, this is a required visit for those of us who love fragrances when...
I think this one is the most accurate because if there is a male equivalent, there shouldn't be the glamor that is associated with No 5 - it should be down to earth. I don't know if I have an...
Parfumerie Generale Cuir d'Iris
Came on here to say this. Good job.
I would seek out Lavender Palm - it's a relatively light and green lavender fragrance and quite unobtrusive if you live in Japan. It has a distinctive aloe component.
They went all out on that bottle. Love it!
My recommendation on a bone-dry tobacco is Yosh Sombre Negra - it doesn't have any sweetness to it. My favorite tobacco scent.
Eau de Herpes.
To me, Voyage EdT and Parfum are delights and two of my favorite summer scents. He's an icon and his fragrances are definitely not for everyone but he has been true to his aesthetics. The BBC...
I came on to say Tam Dao as well. I'd include Dior Vetiver to this list of elegantly simple fragrances.
That's the one I own as well.
Is DelRae still available, Kumquat?
