LOL, my first cologne was Banana Republic M.
Not nearly as bad as the reviwers made it sound!
Id like to be the third to recommedn c&s 88.
It is hard, though, when you buy something blind or a sample, because you dont maybe recognize the topnotes to be dead. :-[
I find this very wearable by a man. Not just wearable- I mean, Chanel 5 is wearable by a man- but Rive Gauche Femme smells very unisex to me. Anybody else?
no, no they don't. They also don't have Xs or Paco, so those are out of the running.
What they carry with tobacco notes are (in order of tobacconess): The Dreamer, D&G PH, Dunhill (not listed, but...
I don't understand all the hubbub about Tea for Two. Sure, its way better than 97% of teh things on the amrket, but I find it the least of my L'artisans. It's gimmicky somehow, almost like a Demeter...
Russlan- I can feel your pain. So many bottles have gathered dust since I added this to my collection.
makes me a bit queasy in the summer though, as with most foody-noted orientals.
Looking at his wardrobe, I would have to say Mechant Loup
But I also think he could do with some Terre d'Hermes
L'Artisan VdR, Xs, and my Vetiver Tonka decant (RIP)
Tea for Two
I had a decant of this, and MAN was it good. no cinnamon here, just powdery iris and maybe some kind of subtle leather afterwards. The reviews talk about how well-blended it is, and i completely...
In a weird way, I dont think Boss 6 and BB are that far off from eachother, with their shared warm vanillaness. I'd wear them under the same weather conditions is what I mean. On certain mornings,...
You know, I quite like it. Thats saying a lot for a Boss frag, as they are terible IMO, but this is quite nice. Its no showstopper, but ery elegant for what it is.
Hmm, on me it lasts very impressively for a frag composed of such light ingredients, Then again, Im in upstate new york, pretty darn far from the tropics.
Allure, no contest.
I like Geir more, but Gendarme is THE office scent IMO.
I hate those applicator rods even more than spraying EdP. just ca't win!
Bulgari Black def.
L'EAU PAR KENZO
YSL LIVE JAZZ
Also Magnetism... what is it with that frag today?
They both have their strengths. Gendarme is clean and inoffensive, Bulgari PH is musky, so its a little warmer and a little sexier.
What is so annoying about Gilette is the way their business model forces you to upgrade to the newest new. They will leave Mach 3, and Turbo, and Sensor and all those old blades on the shelves, but...
Yeah, Dior Homme is the number one best way for a man to pull of smelling like flowers, IMO
I also feel that Vetivers are somehow springtimey, something about that earthiness, makes me think of little worms poking their head out of moist soil to see flowers. Therefore, I say Guerlain...
same here! :)
ditto... Id also look into Bvlgari PH and Allure Sport
FOr the record, you would get more pepper out of the Extreme version.. not that that helps with your current query
Allure is more interesting, but could be hard to wear (cloying sometimes) BLUE
Happy smells very fake to me as well, like Kool-Aid orsomething. The Hermes is great for straight up no nonsense Tropicana commercial orange, but I like Eau Sauvage best.
Within pepper frags, it is virtually the opposite of Allure (my SOTD), which is quite oriental and suited for a breezy brisk temp. Like myaccolades says, Bulgari PH really hits its stride in hot hot...
yep, one of the easiest-to-wear, no-brainer colognes you can have in your wardrobe
again BRIT, again Dior Homme, but also take a look at
Diesel Plus Zero (cinnamony yum yum)
Obsession (orientally yum yum)
I second that ranking, except Id say:
1. Claiborne Sport
3. tie between KC Reaction and Polo Blue
well, to my nose, all contemporary Dunhills share a synthetic, cloying saccharine nastiness to them, if that counts. the original from the 30s is great though.
Q) What is the best fragrance?
A) There is no best fragrance. If there were, there would be no Basenotes. Perfumery is as much an art form as it is an accessory. You will find everyone here has...
I try to limit myself to one TRANSACTION a month, no specified bottle-count or preordained monetary ceiling. That way if I think I want something, I have to buy it on the day I buy everything else...
XS, my SOTD, has the reputation of being closely related to Himalaya, though I must confess never having sniffed Himalaya so I cant attest. If the similarity is all its cracked up to be, Himalaya...
I have to say that one of my favorite noses in the review boards has to be Jeff H.'s valet (not to be confused with Naed' s "Andre, the somewhat fractious valet of my freind Marcel"). What a nose...
Should you decide to retire Ten, im sure you can move it quickly on the boards here, as it is hard-to-come-by and has a certain degree of prestige to it.
Hahaha, stores must be wondering why the Egoiste testers are always depleated, but sales are so low ::)
wait, if you just ordered Geir, why are you even bothering to waste time and a tiny bit of money on the Swiss Army/Grey Flannel conundrum? I think you'll see that once Geir arrives, you will not care...
it's "gay-err", but in one syllable. To a native english-speaker, rhyming with "air" is close enough.
Brit, envy and Dior Homme
yep. aftershave is a waste of time.
Reportedly, this is first lady Laura Bush's signature scent. go figure.
agreed, nobile is in a class all its own. The closest I can think of is Drakkar, but thats like replacing GIT with Curve.
right on Renato. I think you are alluding here to a phenomenon much more common on Basenotes than the sedentary life of the "signature scenteur" : the Holy Grail scent. Many of us stick around on the...
I think I know what you mean with Hererra. To me there is a very sharp, bitter celery-crunch-like smell hidden in there. Very unharmonious. Im hoping that I just bought a bottle that had gone sour...
CGA's affection for this scent has got me wearing it again, and all through the weekend I was enamored of it. Klein scents typically get slagged off on Basenotes, but I think contradiction deserves a...
Bvlgari Black atop Dior Homme
I had great success applying Dior Homme first, letting it dry through that intense powdery stage, and then putting one Bulgari Black. With this recipe, I get the amazing dry, smoky rubber of Black,...
Le Dandy is def. pricier. Makes you feel like Dorian Gray just whipping out the Visa for it.
STAY AWAY! so tacky and predicatable. Drakkar is for people who dont know about Basenotes.
Ive never even been to the niche side of town...
Hey im wearing Contradiction too... what are the odds!
Which department store?? where??
bulgari black without a doubt. sometimes I just carry it around like those chinese balls that relieve stress.
Oh its there, you have just grown accostomed to it and are not noticing it. Your question of how to know when you have sprayed enough is definately a tricky one, as you cant really trust your nose in...
Allure all the way. something about the intermingling makes a hacking marlobo addict smell like a genteel pipe-smoker.
those were some bitches indeed. Customers like that is the reason why restaurant kitchens are behind closed doors. And if God is on the waitstaff's side (which I think he is), they are...
maybe im getting ahead of myself, but im looking for something for spring. Im gonna be trading with a mate of mine, and these are the two in his wardrobe that, based on the BN reviews, interest me....
'tis the season for Brit
Gucci Rush... when i close my eyes i am lost in a forest, when i open them, i am in this strange cubicle
def. Santos... London smells to me like Burberry's attempt at a Kenneth Cole frag. Barf!
It seems to come up all over the place:"most wanted" threads, "best party fragrance" threads , "worst church fragrance" threads, "best frag for rainy tuesdays when your dog is sick with the flu"...
Boss Bottled and I had a VERY short fling. It ended badly and we havent spoken since.
c'mon Rosberg, there are no stupid questions, only stupid fragrances.
Hey fluke, welcome.
Of the three you got, A*men definately gets the most airtime here at Basenotes. Some swear by it (for its originality, its delicious chocolateness, how strongly it broadcasts...
I second KC Signature and Polo Black, both of which advertise themselves to be Gucci PH, but are nothing but fruit-baskets.
I also concur that Bvlgari Blv Notte is Naaaas-ty, as is Gaultier2 (for...
Wang is just not very interesting
we really should come up with some emergency notification system for such an occurance. You never know when the Axe-weilding Bod-Men will rise up against us snobs.
Umm Paris Hilton, Tom Green (although he was funny), Nicole Richie, Vanilla Ice, the Olsen twins, most new age punk bands, of course you could say the same thing about old punk bands but at least...
O I thing AdG gets its fair thrashing among basenoters
Hey man, Ill say one thing for him, the man knows how to market. Think about it: has anyone in recent memeory accomplished so much with so little actual talent? The man is a bonafide mogul, all...
"Like what fragrances are wery cloying.Which ones stay close to the skin etc etc."
though I am loathe to admit it (for fear of being struck down from on high by a particular Mod), Gaultier2 makes...
to me it is no more or less than a poor D&GPH ripoff (As I remember one reviewer succinctly putting it). They smell so close to me that it is kind of baffling to look at their pyramids side-by-side....
on me the one and only difference between COde and Brit is Brit's cinnamon.
Xs and Herrera Aqua both have some mint on top. I also remember some Boss scent or another being almost entirely Mint (Bossy Boss #57 or Bugo Hoss or somesuch nonsense. ::))
Truly invaluable link, Erfl. How else would I know that Harrison Ford smells like King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, that Bogart smelled like Churchill, or that Spielberg and Leo DiCaprio both smell like...
Yesterday in downtown Boston's famed Filene's Basement, I found an amazing Envy gift set featuring a deo stick, a 50 ml spray, a small bar of soap and a tube of face revitalizer in a mesh dopp kit...
hmmm... sure it was XS and PH? maybe ultraviolet or one of the feminine line....?
chrome hands down no contest. neither are my style, but chrome is less one-dimensional, more versatile, a little classier... polo blue is out of place unless you are wearing flipflops, IMO
you sound like a Drakkar Noir man to me.
maybe this is more for the DIY column, but does anybody have any experience altering their frags with Demeter fragrances? what is I wanted to, say, addmore leather to Dior Homme...could these work?
omg and the new Paco Rabanne Ipod!!
how about that awesome dunhill 2003?? vroom vroom
