Does this smell at all like original Calvin?
...I fear it may be ridiculously strong. What are your opinions? Is it overbearing?
This is for everyone reading this:
I bought one from a "department liquidation sale" along with, I am ashamed to admit, several other frags. The blue label actually looks black, for one.
Bond No 9 witha Bugatchi or Thomas Dean flip-cuff shirt
@ hednic: I have tried it, and it was down to that or The One Gentleman...I've owned 3 or 4 D&G but have never bought La Nuit. Makes no sense.
@Tony: I'll see if they carry the PH. How's the...
I have no idea why I've never bought that. I think it's time.
I wish they carried Chanel Egoiste.
I'll check out the GPH II....thanks!
Eau Des Baux is a tonic for the masses.
Thanks to Mrs Demon and our minions for the Ulta gift card! Based on my top ten(signature), what would you recommend as a good choice in their lineup?
I've thought about YSL La Nuit, but am not...
Douse yourself in GIT or Prada Amber.
I've yet to smell the pure malt. That said, the pure leather is something I find repulsive, while I LOVE Pure Havane.
Vintage Polo. Some would say Tom Ford Cypress.
Plus one on this. Also Made To Measure, Polo Red, and A*men Pure Leather
That was quite the exchange, and very informative. Thank you, SoCalWoman.
Thanks, lpp and hednic. Glad to know the purchase went off without incident for you, HN.
I will look to see if they have an actual customer service #. They have a rarity I need!!!
I did a search on here and saw overstock.com reviewed but this appears to be different.
Anyone here ever dealt with this site? They have some great buys if it's safe and legit.
Please help, and...
So I'm guessing it's me. lol
I should qualify the statement better. I have been trying fragrances for my daughter. At first I thought it was just the Taylor Swift/Halle Berry/name-the-celebrity fragrances, but I started to...
...do 90% of frags in the last 5-10 years smell like green tea?
I HATE it when people complain that it's too strong!!!
The worst thing is that I am scared to complain to management about body odor or strong cigarette odor of my coworkers for fear they will...
...came from youthful insecurities??? I think when I was 15 or 16, knowing I wasn't a jock or in the popular crowd, I determined that I needed SOMETHING to get me in the running, so to speak. I...
You and I have exceptional tastes.
+1 on Dunhill Desire(red)
Also, Varvatos(original), Dirty English, Onyx Azzaro, Eau Des Baux.
In my day(mid-late 80s) it was Drakkar, Polo, Halston, etc and we BATHED in it. I do not recommend...
I have read that Issey Bleu fits this description, but have yet to enjoy it myself. Perhaps those who have sampled it can share.
I am also 46, coincidentally. I would concur that typically that is not a young man's fragrance, HOWEVER...most young men choose acqua di gio or One Million and smell like clones of one another. I...
Thus far I have responded to every single one of your posts. I like the smell of Aventus. It's totally different from anything i had tried up to that point. But you and I agree: that price is just...
Are we thinking cool weather formal? What application are we talking here?
Valid point. Much as soooo many people wanted Muhammed Ali to lose.
I can't believe I forgot the rotting citrus of the entire hilfiger lineup. UGH!
I've been pleased with my Eau Des Baux, and this one piques my curiosity. A masculine, spicy lavender sounds intriguing.
Sadly, they did reformulate Polo and it lost its magic. Eau Des Baux doesn't smell like it, but I would have to say that a person who likes Polo would probably like Eau Des Baux as as well....
Have you tried these? I was looking at Polo on eBay and they were selling this. Just want to know if they are good knockoffs.
Oddly, I found SOME similarities with Mambo, but the Calvin had a more elegant refinement to it.
I'll have to check out Tuscany. If I have smelled it, I don't recall.
I was mourning the loss of the original formula of Polo Green, and suggestion were made as to other quality fragrances to try. This led me to Eau Des Baux eventually and I am grateful.
Now I am...
Antaeus. I have only scrubbed a few in horror and this was one of them.
DKNY Be Delicious
Only on BN would this sort of description pique one's curiosity enough for us to actually seek out this scent.
+1 here. Smells like the dentist's office.
Also, Guerlain Derby was soooo highly recommended so I ordered a sample vial. It was like ancient battery acid mixed with Drambuie.
The Eau de Parfum is fairly strong, but fades faster than EDB. Try the EDT if you get the chance. I still say that if you ease up on the trigger EDB is great.
Spicebomb fades in about an hour on...
Brut 33 is not anything I could ever imagine wanting to smell like. I imagine if I worked in a sewage treatment facility I would expect to rock that smell.
EDB. You should try HiM by Hanae Mori if you want somewhat of a similarity that isn't as overpowering. Or wear less EDB. maybe one spritz. Maybe mist it in the air and walk into it.
Seems as though there is a fair amount of discussion in this thread now :)
Point taken....but I fully anticipated that no one would just drop a name without discussing it. Who here is capable of...
This was started as a thread about male fragrance in the male fragrance discussion folder. I guess I fail to see the inappropriate nature of the contents. It seems as though Ipp dislikes me. I now...
I used Polo as a signature scent in the 80s when I could afford it, and as an adult have always owned it or at least the majority of my life. I do have to say that the reformulation is a lot...
ahhhh hahahahahahaha!!!!!! To think you started this with "not bad." Oh, the irony....
I about choked on my Aventus protein shake reading this
I like original Polo, Eau Des Baux, and Calvin. You think it would appeal to me?
I've been curious about Issey Bleueueueueue or however it's pretentiously spelled.
Just don't exceed your Basenotes-prescribed dosage of the official Basenotes anti-anxiety medication :D
Good Lord. This is just for amusement.
A fate worse than death, to be sure.
I agree. So whatever input we get here would comprise the candidates. I didn't just want to list a handful that I selected.
The bug spray accord baffles many of us in its mass appeal. Wearing that in the office is like having Britney Spears pumping through the sound system.
I do also love GIT....for all the talk of Aventus here, no one seems to step up and identify it as their favorite.
So it's not just a clever name? That actually sounds intriguing to me. I also would like to add all the D Squared wood scents to my must-try list.
This is to point out certain frags that are popular and it makes no sense to you as to how they could be.
My main one is ADG
I ordered a sample vial, and only recently bought my first bottle.
I'm glad you're overseas. Waaaaaaay too strong.
Fill in the blank.
The official male fragrance of Basenotes should be ________________.
I'm in for Eau Des Baux.
+1 on Bulgari. They all smell like watered down green tea to me, and for only about 10 minutes with my nose making direct contact with my wrist.
I am really surprised to see Creed listed so many times here. THE official male fragrance of Basenotes seems to be Aventus.
I am kind of surprised that no one has described how this compares to Aventus.
But the foot fetish crowd are on cloud nine....

Other than Pure Havane, I don't care for Mugler. Tom Ford apart from TV(which is linear and doesn't last on me, but I like...
I would suggest Paco Rabane XS for around a third of that price, and I actually prefer it. One other comfort is that the likelihood of a counterfeit is far less with XS.
I have yet to find a Burberry scent that doesn't have a dank basement accord.
I also find Calvin Klein to be abysmal since removing Calvin(blue original) from its lineup.
:lolk: Yeah no kidding....I'm wearing it today. I was acting as if I knew in advance that the most incredible lover I ever had was going to leave me in the next few months and I made sure I did...
The event is lusty, but the lasting impact to leave is romantic, assuming you want a repeat. Freshly applied Varvatos Vintage or maybe Dirty English.
I think I have about 90.
I feel like I should stash these away like a wino.
I can see it now: it's 2027 and I'm wearing some rancid Polo Blue. Z-14, Antonio Banderas, and my last squirt of Eau Des Baux remain...
 I already quit smoking in February.....no way I am giving up my guitars....I've run out of things to sacrifice.
By making a lot of BOLD statements. hahahahahahaha Get it???? Helvetica.....BOLD.....
So we have a few rental houses. Up until summer, all were occupied. Then in late June, there was a fire in one of them. No biggie. BUT....the finishing touches are just now being done. Vacant for...
If you don't like the person asking, you can tell them it's some horrible cheap swill and trick them into wearing it and smelling less than dandy.

And if she just so...
Halston Man Amber and original Polo green. There is "another site" that compares when you read their reviews, and neither has any comparisons listed.
I have done the same thing. I think I was resisting the propensity to prattle on about fragrances because I can't stand it when someone goes on and on about their hobby as if I'm interested. Ever...
If you ever get a chance to go to one of liquidator sales, there's an Asian gentleman selling the most convincing-looking knockoffs ever. I didn' suspect a thing until I got home and looked at the...
We really do put the whole banana in hahahahahahahaha
If it smells like bug spray, it's real.
I remember Duran Duran's "A View To A Kill" and Queen's "Radio Gaga" both debuted the same night on MTV....I was likely wearing Pierre Cardin.
This is such a feel-good thread:2vrolijk_08:
Vintage Polo, pre-reformulation, original calvin, and Halston Amber Man.....300 bucks would get me a bunch, rather than dumping it all on one bottle. I would also wear it, as to me it only has value...
I was thinking Paco Rabanne, but Halston Z-14 certainly comes to mind. This can be had CHEAP and though I am sure it's a reformulation it still smells damned close to the original.
Okay now we're adding a soundtrack to the powerhouse era of the 80s?? I'M IN!!! :)
The Church, Adam and the Ants, B-52s, DEVO, Prince, Bowie(who doesn't get chills watching that new Kia commercial...
I wore Pierre Cardin first, then I decided to step it up a bit. I had it narrowed down to 2: Z14 and Polo. There was a difference of about $8 so I went with the Z14. I strutted around the mall like a...
With Polo, Drakkar, Halston, Kouros, Paco Rabanne, Calvin, and all the varied "In your face" scents drenching the leather jacketed throngs of the night club crowd, it was a decade of...
Thanks for the support. :)
Avamt garde was recommended to me because I like spicebomb and LOVE Eau Des Baux....I don't think they smell much alike at all :(

This thread has had more twists and turns!!! I almost think we should each call L'Occitane and share our results here. So it's "being phased out," being discontinued, NOT being discontinued, there is...
ah hahahahaha....I think we all need this in our wardrobes

No love for Sex Panther? I saw it in a haberdashery and was in denial it was real. Then I bought it.
A bonded leather glove soaked in original Listerene. Do not want. I tried this at Von Maur and the young lady behind the counter asked what I thought. I said "it's horrible. Here. Smell it." I handed...
I agree with this 100%. I have tried TV, Spicebomb, HiM....it is similar to them in varied ways but a bit edgier. I for one find Tobacco Vanille to be very one-dimensional: if you like tobacco and...
I was thinking about those disgusting jellybeans that taste like all sorts of unpleasant things but look normal enough. Imagine a cologne that has a nice opening, then turns into a foul smell in the...
Okay, so some people are being told it is being "phased out," some people are being told it isn't....some Sales Associates have heard nothing of the sort, while some have. The guy I called at...
I just called their customer service. They have no official date for discontinuation. While on the phone, I ordered a bottle. $52 USD includes shipping and there is no sales tax as my state has none...
This thread had me cracking up a few times. Just as an aside, I HAVE smelled things far worse than ANY cologne in an elevator....
I am saddened to know that this was true. PLease don't buy all of it before I get a chance.
Please bear in mind, I had intially emailed only to ask if it was currently in stock, as their website didn't clarify. That email was the response I got.
I am going to ask that this thread be left up for now, and I will be certain that the spelling is correct and will email them again so that we may know with certainty whether it is discontinued.
