Always an uplift to read an incomparable writer such as Luca Turin. Hope he writes forever. Thanks.
Other than Luca Turin, Octavian is one of the only reviewers I truly love to read. Complete genius, great writer, with more overall knowledge about perfume than probably anyone else in the world.
All hat, few cattle. But it's good to see the counter can reach 100,000. I appreciate hednic's interest in fragrances. But the only way I know he even has interest is because he tells us he owns...
Smelling Declaration makes your world feel a little bigger. Terre d'Hermes just makes you glad it's a lot better than most. It also has a lot more to say with some heat and sweat. I'd take either one...
Over time it's a lot more interesting than Terre d'Hermes.
-- Russian tea: smoke with woods and cold, not hot. spices. Hot is cinnamon. Cold is cardamom.
Oud: Songe d’un Bois d’Ete
Rose: No. 88
Amber: Ambre Sultan
Well, there's one thing for sure: I don't now and never have relied on community consensus lists for much of anything. But I like the fact that the lists promote the use of only one spray. :-)
Hmm. You like it, it's a hit. You don't like it, it's a miss. Quality fragrance by Jean Claude Ellena, btw.
That's for damn sure.
Like any other fragrance, if you like it you spray it on and wear it wherever you want. If you live in a house you can actually wear it there also.
Antaeus used to be a dark bitter leather chypre of great distinction related to vintage Or Black (Pascal Morabito). These days it's moved a lot closer to something as bad as the fruity sweetness of...
Hermes told Guy Robert they wanted something that smelled like "cold pipe". Don't think they got it. The quality is excellent but the fragrance is dull.
Bel Ami won that one before the race ever...
Don't love either but Musc Ravageur is a quality frgrance, and a hell of a lot better fragrance than Oud Wood, which is thin, unfinished and unnecessary, even by the relatively paltry standards of...
Can a man eat tacos?
Zino Davidoff is a great fragrance but it's mainly a rich complex oriental fougere rather than any kind of prominent rose, and it's far more about geranium than rose.
No. 88 (Czech &...
A random list abbreviated by my being tired of thinking about it. Are they underrated? I'd say so. Most of them have been reformulated and aren't as good as they once were. There are many more that...
One of those I always wanted to like but rarely wore. Once walked by a guy who smelled great. Pungent, energetic, positive, masculine smell. Asked him what it was, he told me it was Michael Kors for...
I don't rotate. I just wear the one I want, and that's the signature scent.
I'm talking about the vintage edp and parfum. The new stuff still smells great, but the attenuation of bergamot, Peru balsam and other things has changed the fragrance a lot.
I don't smell it as...
Eau de Cologne
Haven't tried the new Pour Monsieur EDP
Pour un Homme (Caron)
Cuir Beluga (Guerlain)
Most women I know are crazy for Yatagan.
Great review from Barabara Herman on Aramis:
"....This glorious leather chypre.........Needless to say, we were hooked. We were still wandering around...
Plenty of idiots on here over the last five years. It isn't too difficult to figure out who the good ebay sellers are, and there are many. I've bought hundreds of bottles of all kinds on ebay. The...
Hmm. Unlike some of the above, my 38 yr old female companion of fifteen years loves No.88 and Leather Oud. She also likes Aramis worn in the right doses.
She also likes a variety of things such...
I've tried a lot of batches. At best it smells like something I'd probably use to shampoo my crotch.
Attn: The global perfume industry is generally valued at around $30 billion.
Yeah, people wear a lot perfume. And most of it smells really bad.
Acetylenic esters, which are regulated now, so you smell the "petroleum" note less intensely in the new stuff.
"KOUROS: The Scent of Gods (1/2)"
"KOUROS: The Scent of Gods (2/2)"...
Dior Homme edt is an excellent fragrance, but associating my dad with a Godzilla vanilla bomb like Dior Homme Intense might be traumatic.
I like things with a little mystery and character:
Thanks. It's always refreshing to read Luca's reviews.
I'd have a hell of a time wearing it if it didn't feel like me in one way or another.
A few that stand out at the moment. Vintage formulations in most of them:
I've bought hundreds of bottles of the best fragrances ever made. I've rarely engaged with sales clerks.
"Who here has engaged in walking outside to to determine what kind of car they have?"
I don't give a shit because I don't like it and would never wear it. I also don't wear something with the soul intention of others liking it. As Jack Hunter said, other people will like and dislike...
Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinion.
Title correction: "Need A Life"
As far as the poll goes, all of the ones included are pretty bad. Also, great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinion...
Noth sure about about Acqua di Gio. Neither are great, but I think Acqua di Gio pour Homme is a better fragrance than Aventus.
I feel more comfortable wearing whatever I want.
Jeke is a fairly well-made fragrance and I dig what he's trying to do, but Slumberhouse basically sucks. I know you love to hear it. :-)
It's all about the juice. Bottles can be aesthetically pleasing, but if I rely on a fragrance bottle to fulfill my aesthetic needs I'm probably not doing too good. No matter how good the...
Still one of the best chypre drydowns if not the best chypre drydown out there. Easy on the application and it's one of the best masculines there is.
Barbara Herman loves it and wears it. See her...
Chances of most of them ever having much more to contribute is slim.
Might want to get to the doctor. Actually you just need to smell hundreds of fragrances over the next few months and you'll find A*Men lasts a hell of lot longer than you might want. No stopping that...
If he actually feels like a man he'll wear any damn thing he wants and he'll feel good about it. The only thing that matters is how the fragrance feels to you. Does it feel like you or not? The only...
I wear whatever the hell I want and love it.
Been awhile since I wore it, but Eloge du Traitre is tiny, simple, monotonous and characterless compared to something as great as vintage Yatagan (I don't know the new stuff). Memories could be...
Far too much to try and remember, but it has happened at least twenty times over the last fifteen years
I don't see any comparison. One is a classic citrus, the other a fresh green fougere.
When I wear Green Irish Tweed I feel like I'm wearing the stuff that blows out of an Abercormbie & Fitch...
As Jean Guichard, great perfumer and director of the Givaudan Perfumery School, said: “Civet is a fundamental French perfume material, a historic girder of the industry and the quintessential scent...
Octavian Coifan, renowned perfume historian, writer, genius, passionate critic of perfumes, understands that "authentic perfume is a misfit of contemporary consumer society. Releases numerous, low...
Wearing fragrances in order to get compliments. Proof that manliness dead. Needing more projection and longevity? No wonder.
The only reason you should wear a fragrance is because you like it.
Musks Koublai Khan, which contains civet, castoreum, musky ambrette and three kinds of musk.
Good choices above on the Patous, Guerlains, Chanels and Coty.
I don't consider myself a collector. Such bondage. I just buy the things I like. I've bought a ton but sold just as many. In this...
"......The perfume itself is also an oxymoron... it is brimming with clean, striking, soapy freshness - drawing upon the pristine vitality of mother earth - though much of its composition is...
He makes some interesting accords and a few decent if mostly half-baked fragrances. If one of these is good I'll be pleasantly surprised. I like this guy, though. He's intelligent and has a lot of...
Johnny, good to see you around. I bought this bottle in 2006. Smells great. Must buy more. Hopefully it's still good. Such an extraordinary fragrance. Nothing like it.
No.88 (Czech &Speake)
Not quite as good as Songe d'un Bois d'Ete, but it's one of the few decent things made in the last fifteen years.
What are the other two?
Secret de Rochas Oud Mystère
Tuscan Scent Incense Suede
Vintage Pascal Morabito Or Black is as dark and melancholy as it gets.
Dolce & Gabbana pour Homme (1994)
I always forget how much I like this energetic and fun little fragrance.
Always interesting to hear what people have to say, but it doesn't matter what the consensus is. The only thing that matters is what you think of it. Try the things and find out. Guarantee you you'll...
A confident person can wear anything he or she wants. I don't care for the EDT, but the last time I wore Shalimar EDP my female partner told me it reminded her of Bois du Portugal, but she thought...
What he looks like is irrelevant. I wouldn't ask him from far away, but if we happened to get into a somewhat congenial conversation, I'd probably ask him. To the average person with relatively...
All equally bad.
If I had to have one it would be Edition Blanche. If I were going with Chanel, it would be Sycomore, Pour Monsieur, or Egoiste.
I've owned both. Other than the fact that they're both woody orientals, I don't even know that it's a valid comparison.
The boozy heart notes and rich, high quality sandalwood base have been...
Phenomenal fragrance. One of the few that interests me over the last thirty years.
One of the most elegant solutions to the agarwood equation, an exceptional smoothness and perfect transition of...
Pour un Homme (vintage)
Songe d’un Bois d’Ete
The more you smell, the better you're able to smell. Like most things: use it or lose it. Some perfumers can smell up to three thousand individual scents. Fragrances that smell one way to you now...
I don't know the other fragrance, but Santal Noble would be more accurately named as Nondescript Woody Amber Noble. Banal, and not suggested.
It's a precursor of Eau d'Hermes (1951), but Eau d'Hermes is better.
Guerlain Songe d'un Bois d'Ete
Dior Leather Oud
Now on Netflix:
Definitely. He's a genius. Drugs probably have little to do with it, it's just Nietzschean, whatever you want to call it. It's the way he speaks about a lot of things. Lutens has said several things...
There are hundreds of designer and niche fragrances that are better than most Creeds. Creeds are like nice watercolors in progress.
I was impressed ten years ago when I didn't know any better. The stuff is thin and bloodless with the bone structure of a sea cucumber. As close to Shalimar as a hawk from the moon.
I keep a thirty yard distance between me and any Abercrombie & Fitch store in order to escape the vile smell of Fierce blowing out of it.
Loathsome, contemptible, as bad as any of the insect repellents sold at Sephora.
I'll be looking for it. :-)
Kouros will always be one of the few towering masterpieces. Hot-blooded, unapologetic, a force to be reckoned with.
Man or woman, I always wonder who actually recognizes themselves in a vacuous...
Always great to read the_good_life's intelligent, well thought out and well written posts. Thanks, man.
Amouage in transition but they're far from finished. They have too...
People are intrigued by the word "oud". It sells almost as well as top notes.
Neither. I have things I like.
Great women's fragrances
It may be important to the insecure blockheads that make up most this site, but whether it's masculine, feminine, Mexican or Chinese is irrelevant. It's either good or not. You either like it or not.
Get over it. If you don't like it, don't do it. Sounds like you do like it. So keep doing it and feel good about it.
I don't collect. I just go for things I like. Collecting is for the obsessive compulsive and egotistically insecure
I've bought so many I can't even remember 'em all. I've sold a lot of them. I...
Man, you're pushing it hard. Forget it all and wear the one that feels right. Stay out of the grey areas and make a decision.
Entirely feeble. Would probably make a good dishwashing liquid.
If this pathetic thing a masterpiece then I'm Roger Federer and the last hundred and thirty years of perfumery are an illusion.
Pour un Homme (Caron)
She probably moved on to better things.
Love Katie. She's cute, intelligent and has a lot of fun with it. Always liked to watch her reviews.
