    I've got a little sample of it: spicy, dry, savoury, peppery with a weird soapy edge, but not that distinctive...and therefore not 'fresh' and 'modern'.

    My guess:

    It's got a brown box. Brown is not a funky colour. Old men wear brown trousers. The scent is sort of 'brown' and earthy... with orange rind. The smell is pleasant...but distantly related...

    Dior Patchouli Imperial is pretty horrible to my nose as it's a sort of 'sweetened' patchouli. I don't know the other scent you mention.

    I tried 'Marble' yesterday and liked it straight away. It's in the Sauvage/Aventus/Green Irish Tweed area without smelling of either in particular but has that same diffusive quality one associates...

    G. Bellini X-bolt (£4 for 50ml from Lidl) is a superb Boss Bottled clone - slightly 'harder' musk than the original but not much in it

    You can still pick up old bottles of the stuff in Chemists. I paid £45 for 100ml 2007 bottle. You can often get a discount if they've had them around in the display case for a while.

    You're probably attracted to the sandlewood in those so start with that in the base rather than the patchouli. You might like Egoiste for instance....?
