Comme des Garcons 2 MAN
for the first cool morning of autumn here.
Just right for a cooler day
The hard-to-find vetiver - at least here.
Floris Elite - Deo and EDT
Arlington cologne and aftershave milk - DR Harris & Co.
A rare post these days to celebrate the wearing of one of my favourite winter scents - Carven Homme
Penhaligon's Endymion. Originally a present for my wife who found it too sweet!
YSL's first and IMO still best - Pour Homme.
What about this offering from Clarins as an off-beat choice. http://www.basenotes.net/ID26120536.html
I could smell this lovely fresh powdery scent wafting past my office earlier today and tracked...
Back up bottles of:
M. de Givenchy x 2
YSL Pour Homme
Nino Cerruti PH (3 minis)
Azzarro Pour Homme
Not sure if anyone has mentioned Nino Cerruti PH (1979) which to me is still very up to date - but like hen's teeth of course.
I second the Ask Andy recommendation. There you will not only learn about quality but also about fit. These two things have been eye-openers for me.
I grew up in the Designer 80s and it took me...
Monsieur Rochas - the old EDT concentree.
Interesting choice of words in the title too! I guess some would say that being fashionable does not guarantee 'style'. Style, for me is something personal that takes time to evolve and is often...
Penhaligon's Endymion. Comes into its own on a cool misty day like this.
Yardley English Lavender EDT and the lovely talc and I have just freshened up with one of their pochettes refraichissante!
I love it too. Sophisticated I can just about manage but even with the help of Elite I struggle with the others!
I wore it as my SOTD on Wednesday - shower gel, Deo stick and EDT. Lovely.
I just took the name from Trotsky our Russian cat! He is a gentleman - of course!!
Interesting that you choose this particular title for the thread.
Many of you will, I am sure, be familiar with the influential book 'Gentleman' by German author Bernhard Roetzel (Konemann 2004). ...
Paul Smith London - Deo stick and EDT
Thanks for all the advice.
In the end I went for Hermes Equipage. I'm glad I did as it turned out to be not quite cool enough for the likes of Dior Homme (not my fave, anyway). The setting for...
I am going to a wedding on Sunday. The weather in the area (north of London) promises to be cool and grey (about 20 degrees C). I am not one of the principal guests so will not be wearing formal...
It's probably not quite the image we would want to project....I put it down to their uneducated noses!
Rochas - Monsieur Rochas EDT Concentree (1969)
(See also 'Granny' thread)
...said a colleague today when she came into my office! She said she detected a fusty, fruity kind of smell that was old fashioned but very nice.
We concluded that it was my new bottle of...
I have the current versions of all three.
Unfortunately the only 'original' that I experienced was Balafre. There are a good 20 years between the old and the new in my case so it is hard to be...
Comme des Garcons 2 man - for a cool and damp morning
Monsieur de Givenchy
I have to admit that I have not spent too much time on these excellent boards of late. Partly pressure of work but partly also a rather jaded feeling about the whole subject.
However, this thread...
BRUT - of course and in winter Puig's Quorum
Pour un Homme de Caron
Thanks grau - I'll try to track one down.
On the casting point, I understand what you mean. However, in the book and in the TV version Charles ponders 'It was odd, I thought, how the same...
This classic 1945 book by Evelyn Waugh made him an immediate 'star' and was, of course, superbly adapted for television in the early 1980s by Granada Television.
I know there are many fans here...
As I suspected, Herb Lady, this has not generated much response. I am not one of the younger basenoters but I sense that they will struggle to come up with many, if any truly stylish examples....
The collar looks like sh*t I agree. But that seems to be the least of his worries. Jacket is much too big and the sleeves are about 2 inches too long! Surely that is not an advert :o
I enjoy both Azzaro PH and Quorum - but only in colder weather. From about now until late September, I tend to steer clear of them both.
YSL PH is great all year round.
Pour un Homme de Caron
Floris Elite - shower gel, deo and EDT :)
I think Sabrina and Charade are the two I would pick also. Sabrina was of course he first tie-up with Hubert and I gather that Audrey presented herself at his Salon and chose clothing off the racks...
My first wearing of my favourite Monsieur de Givenchy this season :)
Which film of Audrey's do you consider the most stylish (in terms of her style rather than the movie as a whole)?
I think Herb Lady hit the nail on the head. These ladies had STYLE. Audrey's style was often summed-up by 'refusal'. She knew what not to wear - if I may use that expression.
Antonio Puig Sybaris
I am a member of AAAC - Brideshead is the name, what! It's very focused on the traditional style of the gentleman. IMO there is also too much attention on the minute detail - whether a gentleman...
Suffering with a cold all week but I can still smell the superb Nino Cerruti PH that I am wearing today - talc and edt.
On the subject of investment dressing, I have just got a pair of shoes back after a refurbishment. They have had new 'long leather soles' and leather heels with a quarter rubber. The shoes are...
Trinny and Susannah are pretty frightening, I think. While I do have a lot of sympathy for their approach (lots of 'non Basenoters' need that stern attitude, I'm sure) what is disappointing is that...
With all the recent interest - YSL Pour Homme
English Lavender by Atkinsons :)
This could be something nice. I love the original, but although it`s a lemon based scent, I don`t think it`s very wearable at the summertime. Well, you have to be extra careful with application, at...
I'm fortunate to live close to London and to visit regularly on business . So I normally shop there or in one or two other decent places close by. Also there is a 'Designer Village' 4 miles away...
BRUT - once a young man's scent, now probably an 'Old Man' scent
Sandringham by The Crown Perfumery created for Edward VII - he always appeared to be an older man and the scent reflects this -...
I keep a pair of Calvin Klein typically understated sunglasses in the car - which I got last year. My favourite pair are some fairly ancient Emporio Armani sunglasses that I bought on holiday in the...
:o :o Who can compete with that?
Creed Green Irish Tweed - with a nice Mulberry tweed jacket :D
Vetyver Lanvin - shower gel, after shave balm and EDT
I always think very early in a new Spring/Summer season that everything is hard to accept. *Here it is still just above freezing, with snow forecast for later this week. *So most beiges and light...
Pino Silvestre - shower gel and EDT
czesc, Wow! Cool or what!? I love the idea of vintage smoking accessories even though I no longer smoke.
I've just got this - a gift set with EDT and shower gel - and I agree :D
The very formal Eucris by Geo F Trumper - quite superb
Monsieur de Givenchy - suitably understated as a King should be but with great authority :D
I keep thinking about revisiting Polo which I have not worn for about 10 years. I do wear quite a bit of RL Polo clothing and somehow the scent would 'finish off' the outfits.
Also Knize 10, Creed...
Slightly more relaxed today:
Black very finely ribbed woolmix suit - 2 button SB with centre vent - Ben Sherman
Taupe fine cord shirt and silk tie with wavy lines in blacks, browns, cream - both...
kilted - sounds very cool!
I'm a bit more soberly dressed as I am working in the office of my Associates today:
Suit - dark blue Prince of Wales SB with side vents by Jeff Banks
Azzaro Pour Homme - deo and EDT
Sounds great Alex. I must admit that although I have a pukka brush by Kent and the aforementioned mug/soap, my razors are only Gillette three-blade disposables - what an oik I am :-[
Also time of year is important. As spring starts to appear I gradually wean myself off the heavier leathery scents (and, of course the more wintery clothes) and start to embrace, for...
Thanks Octothorpe. Also just saw a thread on 'Ask Andy' about RL lines and quality which gave a similar thumbs-up.
A bit more outre - Geo F Trumper's block of alum. You rub it on to a still damp face and it makes you jump through the roof :o Also you would need to moisturise as well (I use Clarins). Should solve...
I have a lovely cream coloured Crabtree & Evelyn shaving mug made by Masons. It is a treat to use at weekends when I have more time.
I always used C&E shaving soap in the mug but...
Pino Silvestre - all over shampoo and edt. First time out today. I like it - despite the poor reception it often gets.
Ralph Lauren Shoes would not normally be on my shopping list. *For formal wear I tend to favour English shoes - Church's, Tricker's, etc. *For casual shoes I am far more flexible, of course.
Creed Green Irish Tweed 75ml - £78
Dior Jules 100ml - £74
Happy Valentines Day! Signoricci for me. Lovely.
Beau Brummel said that 'if a person turns to observe your dress, you are not well-dressed'. It sounds perverse, but it is true! The same goes for fragrance, IMO. It is part of the overall impression...
GFT by Geo Trumper (from a sample)
Not sure if this has been mentioned. I saw it the other day in men's EDT. I tested it and may get it soon.
I am tending to move away from 'Designer' style to a more traditional English look - at least for business:
DAKS suits, Crombie and Jasper Conran shirts with double cuffs, ties from Turnbull &...
I had never heard of Jovan Fever but spotted a few bottles of it in a local chemist. It was an EDT - about 75ml from memory and the boxes were a little dusty! There was a tester which I used and the...
Alone - apart from the odd opportunity with certain female clients to discuss (on a very superficial level) fragrance.
Pour un Homme de Caron
Bellmondo and Jean Seeberg in Breathless, on the other hand, work perfectly on their own.[/quote]
I think that is why I was a little disappointed in Bande a Part - that is what I...
Lancome Balafre - lovely warm leathery scent on this cold morning :)
Dior Homme - shower gel, deo and EDT. I may have over-done it a bit :D
First the issue of Prada and Church's shoes. *What has been the impact I wonder?
I have a pair of black Diplomats that just pre-date the Prada era. *They have been away for refurbishment in the...
Important meeting with a client later about new business, so:
My new DAKS grey pinstripe suit - SB with side vents
White cotton shirt from Crombie, Jermyn St
Burgundy silk tie - Jasper Conran...
Phew! That's a relief. I support the proposal BTW.
There do seem to be scents that may or may not be discontinued and we need as much intelligence about them as poss. For example: Lancome Balafre,...
I agree. I am wearing it today as my SOTD - which I decided to do before I saw this excellent thread. I also find I need to spray quite lightly and perhaps apply a small top-up after lunch, rather...
Creed Green Irish Tweed
One of my favourite Penhaligon's - should be marketed as a unisex scent IMO
Anyway I 'm wearing Antonio Puig's Sybaris
Floris Elite - nice and warm on this very cold day :D
Not really a reply to the original question but to your second one about fashion forums. Try 'Ask Andy'. A quick google search should bring it up. The Ask Andy about Clothes forum is great :D
I would also like to know more about it. In the late 70s I recall it was highly regarded and, while it is still out there I should also like to grab some - if it is as good as its reputation.
DR Harris & Co Arlington - cologne, aftershave milk and shower gel
Faberge BRUT - a little Splash in the bath, Deo, Aftershave and EDT :D My wife wouldn't come near me ::)
I agree - wonderful scent and can be worn all year long and with most clothes. I also love the aftershave balm, which IMO smells even nicer :D
