Received a sample today and didn't like it. It smells A LOT like Chanel Allure to my nose, which I also don't like.

Received a sample today and didn't like it. It smells A LOT like Chanel Allure to my nose, which I also don't like.
Just got back from the Harrods perfume dept.
My first time and a little disappointed. My main beef is that there are no testing strips put out for you to help yourself, so everytime you want to try...
Dior Homme cologne. A perfect summer scent
Dior Homme cologne. Perfect for hot weather.
I think there's some truth to this. Being very rare can certainly help create an aura of reverence, like the original Patou pour homme.
Are there any recent mens fagrances which you think are/will become iconic amongst the fragrance community further down the line? The names of which will be whispered with reverence and awe.
Gucci pour homme II
What was your most expensive blind buy and did you like it?
I read this as "...doing this for heroin" lol.
Armani eau de nuit
Meh, it's a citrus cologne; Short longevity (and it's not that short compared to a lot of citrus colognes) comes with the territory.
Re-apply with abandon to get a refreshing citrus pick me up,...
I really don't see that comparison at all.
Not very familiar with Allure Homme Sport Cologne Sport (stupid name btw), but to my memory, doesn't smell like DHC. I prefer the Dior.Smells more unique than the Chanel.
Dior Homme cologne doesn't contain grapefruit according to the notes; it contains grapefruit blossom which makes it softer and slightly more floral.
I prefer the cologne.
What is the longevity & projection like on Fahrenheit parfum?
Yeah, Shame on Chanel for making a fragrance which is popular with the common people, who clearly have no taste, unlike us superior Basenoters.
I tried Dior Homme cologne in the spring, but I wasn't sure if I could live with the floral aspect of the grapefruit blossom and left it at that.
I have revisited it in the last few days, when the...
What scent do you turn to when you want to refresh yourself on a hot sunny day?
This. 'winter' frags which are dry will work better in the heat than gourmands etc.
Low humidity will also help. Strong oud based scents work just fine in the dry Arabian weather.
That will be low humidity though. Try wearing Angel men in a high humidity region like Florida and see what happens, lol.
Ambre 114 & Mona di Orio Vanille
Anything by David Beckham perhaps
A very interesting comment. If you smelled an old style Guerlain or 80's powerhouse on a young adult, would you also find them absurd? A lot of people on Basenotes say any fragrance can be worn by...
even if you don't like them?
You're only allowed to own 5 frags: They have to be designer, they can't be from an exclusive line and they can't be vintage.
Gucci PH II
Bottega vaneta pour homme
Although I haven't tried it, I find it hard to believe an EDP would only last an hour.
are their any designer brands which make mens fragrances in parfum/extrait de parfums strength?
I can think of Terre d'hermes & possibly Guerlain Habit Rouge. Any others?
The almond and vanilla combo make it too feminine for my tastes
Well I have no idea what kumquat smells like, so I doubt I would be able to smell it, but I appreciate your comments re it embodies the Italian spirit. This is the kind of feedback I am looking for.
l'homme doesn't really do it for me. What are you're thoughts on Moschino Uomo? Does it still feel Italian to you despite having kumquat as a note?
I've been looking for a cheap scent which encapsulates Italian cologne.
Moschino Uomo? is a possible contender, but I'm unsure if the kumquat note de-Italianfies it?
I do like the scent, but...
which frags which were once hyped rarely get mentioned now?
One which comes to mind is Musc Ravageur. This one has totally dropped of the radar.
suggestions for cheap but good Italian colognes. Something citrus, crisp and herbal, perfect to wear with a white shirt.
As a benchmark, examples which are cheaper than AdP
You don't need either.
Well I went with MiP in the end: 2 sprays to the chest
The Debussy string quartet was ok, but I preferred the Ysaye solo violin sonata and the Ravel piano trio.
So I'm going to a classical concert tonight (Dubussy & a few others). I was originally going to wear Gucci PHII, but I've found out that the concert is called Midnight in Paris, and now I'm thinking...
Does anyone know if Harrods would give free samples of expensive niche frags?
There's no such thing as a good or bad fragrance; only ones you like and don't like.
What are some fragrances specifically marketed to men which are similar to TF Black Orchid?
I do like the opening of this, but it becomes quite sweet in the drydown to my nose and spoils it for me.
What is your favourite scent from the AdP Blu Mediterraneo line?
Miller Harris - L'air de Rein
I never said there was a relationship between cost and longevity. Some people haven't understood the point I was making.
Some cheapies have great longevity, some expensive ones have poor longevity:...
do you have have any fragrances that you turn to when it rains or that brings to mind the rain?
For me, Lolita Lempicka au masculin seems appropriate for the damp, dreary weather.
I wore this to the office last week. A co-worker came over to my desk and said 'something smells like biscuits'.
Never made that connection before, but now I can detect an almondy/coconuty biscuit...
Get the one you like the smell of best.
Midnight in Paris
Chanel edition blanche
Which fragrance do you think most accurately portrays the smell of leather?
Even limited distribution as a descriptor of 'niche' has problems with the advent of online shopping. I can buy a bottle of Nasomatto or Mona di Orio just as easily as a bottle of Acqua d Gio.
But almost everybody on basenotes uses the designer/niche labels whether they mean to or not, so it's not meaningless to the vast majority here. And if we are going to pigeonhole frags,...
but my system is awesome! ;)
Designer v niche is not a very good system for classifying fragrances, so I have come up with a new system, which we should all use from now on:
Designer - self explanatory
Luxe - AdP, Guerlain,...
Quality of ingredients or quality of blending?
Chanel and Dior both use world class perfumers and both companies can afford high quality ingredients, which most niche houses can't do.
I find it strange when people, who will happily pay £200+ for a bottle of cologne, complain about longevity of a £50 fragrance.
If you can afford a £200 frag, you can afford to re-apply a £50 frag....
Despite many Basenoters saying you should wear fragrances for yourself, there are still lots of comments about receiving compliments.
I rarely get compliments, and don't particularly want any...
18 yr olds should be spending that kind of money on sex, booze and rock n roll.
For the following genres, state who you think creates the best fragrances:
Bought a few Roja Doves today:
Danger pour homme
Enigma pour homme
Fetish pour homme
That should do me for this week.
so general consensus is that it helps longevity but not projection. That's what I thought. Thanks.
hmm...I don't get any creamy lemon from Bleu de Chanel
I've heard a few people claim that spraying on clothing can increase projection. Is this true? It seems counter intuitive to me, as the frag wouldn't warm up as much as spraying on skin.
Kerosene was my favourite YT reviewer.
That's fighting talk. UK has Floris, Penhaligon's, and Czech & Speake to name a few.
recommend a zingy and herbal Italian Eau de Cologne with the following criteria:
It must contain lemon/pettigrain and herbs (rosemary or basil)
Nothing floral or powdery
not expensive, so I can...
Which part of the world makes the best fragrances?
This thread makes me feel like giving up fragrances. I have enough trouble identifying notes, never mind individual chemical compounds. Blah!
i don't rememBer any poster with this Behaviour.
Two great fragrances, but which one is best?
Kermit the frog - Amphibia
Clive Christian No.1 pure parfum
Looks like a good site, and they buy unwanted bottles off you, which is a very useful service.
"fragrance x is generic and dull"
Ive even read a BN review calling leather oud generic! I stopped paying attention to that particular criticism after reading that.
When comparing these, what are the pros and cons of each?
Thanking you muchly
Wow, You're really bugged by those polls aren't you. Although I don't understand the purpose of them, Having to compare completely different frags requires one to assess them differently than two...
If money truly is no object, then hire someone like Polge to create a bespoke frag just for you.
Not physically angry, but I get slightly annoyed when I see men post l'heure blue as their SOTD.
It doesn't happen if they wear other women's frags. I guess it's because it's the archetypal 'old...
Maybe it's just a US thing, because it's readily available in dept stores in the UK.
I've seen Chanel for sale on allbeauty.com which is a legit site.
GPH II beats everything.
Go into any Boots or department store and they will have a tester bottle out for you to try it.
If you want to spend $250 on a women's perfume, you're free to do so. I wouldn't recommend it though.
This is waaay too feminine for me (and I wear Midnight in Paris with no reservations).
In my opinion, this is a straight up women's perfume.
Chanel - Pour monsieur, Edition Blanche
Dior - DHI, Homme sport
Guerlain - LIDGE
Hermes - Concentrée d'orange verte
Creed - Aventus
Serge Luten - Ambre Sultan
You should go to the Creed boutique in NY armed with a big bottle of Kouros and start spraying all over the shop, laugh maniacally, and walk out.
What a stupid comment. Just because she doesn't like some of his frags it means she's obnoxious and controlling?? really??
Did CHSeifert say she had demanded he get rid of them? No. Maybe try not to...
DHI based on price point and originality.
I think some people just have an inate good sense of smell which puts them at an advantage.
Sure experience helps, and the money to buy lots of different fragrances to learn of course.
Do we know for sure that it's been reformulated, or is it just speculation based on one posters opinion?
A lot of fragrances have a subtle change from top notes to basenotes, especially for beginners to detect. Others, like Burberry Brit, are easy to detect.
try spaying some on your arm, and leave it...
Channel pour monsieur would be my choice as i perfect the Dior homme sport over allure sport.
What is your least favourite male Dior fragrance (excluding the private line)?
Voted for DHI because Gucci pour homme II wasn't listed in the poll.
Inspired by Throwbookatface's recent thread and the fact I'm getting married in a few months;
If you are married, what scent did you wear for your wedding day, and if you aren't what scent would...
We got a pretty good percentage of Dior scent of the days. Well done peeps.
the intense sounds quite gourmand with the nutmeg, cinnamon and pomerose.
I buy regular shower gel and don't think it needs to match the fragrance as it has shower gel has such low projection and longevity.
I'm currently using Radox blackberry and ginger shower gel,...
Don't forget it's Dior Sunday today!! Get those Dior frags out.
Dior Homme Intense.
Thought it would be a little bit of fun to have a Dior dimanche this Sunday.
Everyone wears a Dior fragrance for their SOTD on Sunday. Anyone up for this?
Somewhat taken aback that people are recommending guerlain vetiver for a 14 yr old!
Are there any fragrances or specific notes which could be described as having an indian vibe or that remind people of India?
Why do some like like dirty scents? Rebelliousness.
Fragrances in our culture are regarded by the vast majority of people as a means to smell nice/clean. By wearing scents which are dirty or...
In your opinion perhaps. Edition Blanche and Allure sport are at the very least worthwhile.
