Don't you love it when something works out so well? :D
I am totally that way. In fact, I was lining up fragrances on my dresser tonight pondering the possibilities. You are not alone!
I think it depends on what you consider a wardrobe. I have enough fragrances now so that 5ml will last me a very long time. Anywhere from 1-5 years, honestly. So I am often tempted to put 5ml decants...
Some great ones mentioned above. I would add Violet Disguise from Imaginary Authors and possibly Frapin 1270, though the plum doesn't stand out as much as in some others.
I think it smells like Shara Noir meets Avignon. Liturgical, but not as cold, and with a little more pure frankincense. I agree that it is linear, but I like it quite a bit.
I think Amber Absolute is incredibly similar to Ambre Sultan, but without the oregano, basil note. I think you will love it.
Voyage would work. Al-rehab also sells some very nice fragrances for the price. Sultan, Silver and Aseel to name a few.
I'd like to see this price on LIDGE.
Olympic Orchids makes some of the strongest fragrances I have ever tried. But the strongest thing I own is Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum.
+1 for Heritage.
I have been wearing a lot of vetiver lately. Sycomore and Vetiver Tonka are my two favorite takes on the note.
I cannot for the life of me get why people get barbershop out of Pluriel. I know I am in the minority, but I do not like it. I didn't see if you said you have tired Rive Gauche Pour Homme, but I do...
This. Case closed.
Indigo and Olfactif both carry bottles and samples.
I would branch out and try some different styles and see if anything else perks your interest. Keep it cheap and experiment: Aramis Calligraphy Rose, M Generation, and Dsquared2 Potion are a good...
I have been sampling this house as well. Nice fragrances, especially for the money. You are spot on with Musk Man, it smells like a nice, generic (in a good way!) shampoo.
Try Paestum Rose.
I have worn department or drug store fragrances for as long as I can remember, and my mother always burned incense, but Eau Des Baux was what really pushed me.
Good point. I would have loved a more dominant tobacco note.
Like the By Kilian oud fragrances, I am not a fan of the MFK ouds. I haven't spent a lot of time with the original, but in general I find them just a bit boring.
I am not a big fan of sweet fragrances, especially gourmands, but Ambre Narguile is easily the best one I have tried in the genre.
I didn't know this about iris. Gives me a new respect for fragrances that do it justice.
Finally bought a bit of Guerlain Heritage and MFK Masculin Pluriel. I don't have the MFK yet, but Heritage is incredible. Reminds me a lot of Roja Dove's Danger Pour Homme, but better.
Wow. Fantastic, as always. Looks like my bottle is from "between 1978 and half of the 80s." Maybe I should hold onto it.
Are there any perfumes out there that you read a bunch of reviews and comments on, only to sample and get something completely different from what you've read?
To start, I tried LDDM tonight for...
Tough call, but I think I'd pick Rive Gauche Pour Homme. I wore it this summer and never found it too heavy. Sycomore or Vetiver Tonka might be my second pick.
I'm wearing Full Incense from a sample. I can already tell it's going to be a good night.
I don't know if this has already been said, or how accurate it is, but I talked to the Frederic Malle boutique and they said this is slated for release in February 2016.
Fille en Aiguilles would be perfect.
Heeley Sel Marin is perfect. I also like Lush Breath of God (this really blooms in the heat), the Tom Ford "blue line," Grey Vetiver, and Acqua di Parma Oud to name a few.
Avignon is a more cold, liturgical incense. Sahara Noir is a more warm, frankincense fragrance. I would guess Sahara Noir uses higher quality ingredients, if I had to choose, but both smell equally...
Wow, I wish some of these appealed to me. I don't want to be a scumbag and buy to just to resell, but that is tempting. I'll save them for someone that would actually use them.
This sounds interesting. Is the Millesime base the "ambergris" people usually refer to?
I wouldn't have been able to wait!
I'm with those who will hopefully be wearing something new that day.
I felt the same way. It almost smells like a more feminine leaning version of Portrait of a Lady. I still like it though.
The vanilla was overwhelming to me. Made it feel much too heavy.
I agree with the people saying buy something more fresh. Maybe Versace Man Eau Fraiche would work.
Last Christmas, I received a resin burner and some charcoal as a gift, along with some poorly labeled frankincense. While I love the smell, I believe it's pretty low quality. I'd like to...
Looks like this is available now:
I think it's relatively similar to Chergui and Pure Havane. Very powdery.
I always associate it with aquatic, ozonic, marine, etc. type scents.
Bump! Looking for some samples now.
I like Tea for Two more, but I think Black Orchid sounds like more of what you're looking for. Though apparently not, I guess.
I would get something like Voleur de Roses personally. It's very...
There are so many different kinds. Ambre Sultan is a very good one though.
I did this for a project in school awhile back and went with the house name Les Gens Horribles (I have no idea if it's even right). Never thought of a fragrance name.
Have you tried Amouage Opus VI?
Five current frequently worn:
YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme
Hermes Vetiver Tonka
MDCI Invasion Barbare
Last year I wore Olympic Orchids Dev One. So that's a possibility again. I know I'll be outside this year so I can go as loud as I want.
Can't think of any niche I actually like, but I love Dsquared Potion EDP
Still haven't. Still want to.
Would have been much more excited if Ropion has the perfumer, but as Portrait of a Lady is one of my ultimate favorites I still can't wait to try it.
Glad I'm not alone. On Calligraphy Rose, I ended up finding a decant before considering a bottle and it's very nice. Enjoy!
No, but the Intense version does if I'm not mistaken.
That looks like a huge bottle. I know I've never seen it before.
This might be long, so I apologize in advance.
When I first started getting into this hobby, I just wanted to smell everything. Sometimes that meant buying a decant, sometimes a sample and if it...
For a long time I read reviews about Allure Homme Edition Blanche smelling like a lemon cream pie, and I was terribly disappointed when I finally sampled it. JR Watkins has a lemon cream hand lotion...
I was wearing LIDGE the other day and received a compliment well after I couldn't smell it anymore.
I agree, it is a valid question. I don't think I've ever seen a scented product outside of perfume that has a nose attributed to it.
You are looking for perfume that smells like this, or you want to know the nose behind Dawn dish soap?
My question as well.
I think Leather Oud and Acqua di Parma Oud are two of the best on different ends of the spectrum.
Haven't tried any myself, but I've only heard good things. And yes, the store is still open. There's a big thread on Madhat in the male forum.
I like the sprayer on Rive Gauche Pour Homme, among many others.
Tonight I'm trying Fille en Aiguilles by Serge Lutens. This is my favorite from the house so far. I think it smells just like the notes, very straightforward. I've heard many fragrances dubbed...
Richwood comes to mind. Expensive, but a nice blend of rose and sandalwood.
I called it. :)
Glad your first day went so well. Sounds like a nice place.
I like Dove antiperspirant. It works well enough and is very lightly scented.
Hmm. I've never got any similarities between Encre Noire and Silver Mountain Water. Perhaps both have a lot of Cashmerean. Either way, I much prefer Sycomore to Encre Noire, though it is very similar.
I felt similarly. Wasn't a fan.
I can't share any deep insights on the two, but I do know I smelled Frank No. 2 first and I instantly thought Michael Kors smelled similar when I finally got a chance to smell it.
Best comment in this thread.
A nice affordable option is Dsquared Potion EDP.
Me too! I loved the plain black bottles. They were probably my favorite in the industry.
I'd wear Straight to Heaven. You've said many times it is your most personal scent, the one Kilian himself picked out for you. It will most likely make you feel confident and comfortable, something...
My sister uses something similar to this: http://amzn.to/1GCNWba with wax cubes and I think candles work as well. It always smells good and seems safe.
Some people just prefer "fresher" fragrances. Once you really dive deep, I think you'll be surprised of the range you can find in fresher, lighter fragrances.
I've yet to find anything like it. On performance, I thought it was very short lived on me and I never understood that considering how heavy the notes are. I recently wore it and a good three days...
Interesting. Sephora has carried the Tom Ford "blue" line for awhile now, it only makes sense for them to adopt the other more popular scents in the Private Blend line.
I haven't had a chance to try anything suggested in this thread, but I did get a small decant of Guerlain LIDGE that kind of fits what I am talking about. I get a lot of patchouli, dry cacao and what...
Breath of God and Lust are very nice. If you can still find Icon that's worth looking at as well.
The only real vintage fragrance I would like to track down is one I would never wear. My mother wore Tabu so the smell is very nostalgic for me. The new stuff however is absolute trash.
How does Velvet Rose and Oud compare to other rose and ouds?
I enjoy rose and patchouli more, but for rose and oud I have to give it to Dior Oud Ispahan. Dueto City Oud is a close second. I think they could switch positions on any given day.
Decided to spray on a little bit of Fahrenheit Parfum on my wrist tonight and I am very pleasantly surprised. I plan on wearing it tomorrow so I'll have more impressions but so far I really like it!
Have you ever used 8 sprays of Invasion Barbare?
Moschino has the fragrance for you!
Very nice collection, TheAntagonist.
Voleur de Roses
Terre d'Hermes Parfum
Portrait of a Lady
Rive Gauche Pour Homme
I could easily pick 20 more.
Mine has changed and probably will again. Terre d'Hermes Parfum was my favorite for a long time, but Rive Gauche Pour Homme might just top it.
I don't know if anyone has ever said this before, but the first time I wore Shara Noir around my sister she said, "what are you wearing? You smell like an old book. In a good way!"
Today I am testing Zahd from Slumberhouse. I don't even know where to begin with this one. This is my first experience with Slumberhouse, and it's everything I thought it would be.
When I was...
Is Viaggio d`Africa on your test list? Curious to hear someone's thoughts who has spent so much time with vetiver.
Food, technology and movies/TV. That's about it. Don't drink and don't smoke. Too poor for watches (I'd kill for a Speedmaster MOTM). Never got into weapons or anything. I would like to travel more....
Memoirs of a Trespasser
Tea for Two
I wonder if it's not that style of patchouli that I really like. I do very much enjoy Patchouli Imperial, and I can find some similarities between it and Richwood. Perhaps I need to really explore...
I might have to try that, adding a bit of sandalwood to Coromandel. I haven't tried Borneo 1834, but I will take a look at it. I have a small amount of diluted Mysore I could use, and I also have...
Try less? Sometimes all you need is one good spray to the chest, under your shirt, from about two feet away. Either that or ignore people. It sounds like they were being dramatic.
I've been poking around some older threads looking for info on scents that might be similar to Richwood from Xerjoff, but the threads are always the same: people looking for a replacement. I don't...
